Political Attitudes Vary With Physiological Traits, Douglas R. Oxley, Kevin Smith, John R. Alford, Matthew V. Hibbing, Jennifer L. Miller, Mario J. Scalora, Peter K. Hatemi, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Although political views have been thought to arise largely from individuals’ experiences, recent research suggests that they may have a biological basis. We present evidence that variations in political attitudes correlate with physiological traits. In a group of 46 adult participants with strong political beliefs, individuals with measurably lower physical sensitivities to sudden noises and threatening visual images were more likely to support foreign aid, liberal immigration policies, pacifism, and gun control, whereas individuals displaying measurably higher physiological reactions to those same stimuli were more likely to favor defense spending, capital punishment, patriotism, and the Iraq War. Thus, the degree …

O Que Fazem Os Civilistas No México?, Juan Carlos Marín
The Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Legal Studies
What happened to private law in Mexico? In the early 20th century, this nation embraced a new world of legal thought, characterized by a 'socialization of law,' a 'social point of view,' or 'sociological jurisprudence,' and at the same time rejoiced in the passing of the nineteenth century world of laissez-faire, autonomous individuals and their rights. This paper examines how, as a result, the growth and development of Mexican private law has been seriously altered and stunted.

PSC Discussion Papers Series
Frontier populations provide exceptional opportunities to test the hypothesis of a trade‐off between fertility and longevity. In such populations, mechanisms favoring reproduction usually find fertile ground, and if these mechanisms reduce the chances for survival in old age, demographers should observe higher post‐reproductive mortality rates among highly fertile women. We test this hypothesis using complete female reproductive histories from three large demographic databases: the Registre de la population du Québec ancien (Université de Montréal), which covers the first centuries of settlement in Quebec; the BALSAC database (Université du Québec à Chicoutimi), including comprehensive records for the region of Saguenay‐Lac‐St‐Jean (SLSJ) …

Faculty And Administrative Perceptions Of Professional Programs At Three Private Liberal Arts Colleges., Debra M. Grosz
Faculty And Administrative Perceptions Of Professional Programs At Three Private Liberal Arts Colleges., Debra M. Grosz
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine faculty and administrator perceptions of and attitudes toward professional degree programs at liberal arts institutions. Three upper-Midwestern, private, liberal arts colleges of similar size and religious affiliation were selected for the study. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. Data were collected from a series of 15 interviews with select faculty and administrators. Analysis of the data resulted in three categories. The first category, image, included two themes: Interviewees could define and state the purpose of liberal arts colleges, although there were significant differences among the responses; and interviewees knew …

Corruption, Income Inequality, And Poverty In The United States, Oguzhan Dincer, Burak Gunalp
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In this study we analyze the effects of corruption on income inequality and poverty. Our analysis advances the existing literature in four ways. First, instead of using corruption indices assembled by various investment risk services, we use an objective measure of corruption: the number of public officials convicted in a state for crimes related to corruption. Second, we use all commonly used inequality and poverty measures including various Atkinson indexes, Gini index, standard deviation of the logarithms, relative mean deviation, coefficient of variation, and the poverty rate defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. Third, we minimize the problems which are …

Justifiability Of Littering: An Empirical Investigation, Benno Torgler, María A. García-Valiñas, Alison Macintyre
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The paper investigates the relationship between environmental participation and littering. Previous empirical work in the area of littering is scarce as is evidence regarding the determinants of littering behavior. We address these deficiencies, demonstrating a strong empirical link between environmental participation and reduced public littering using European Values Survey (EVS) data for 30 Western and Eastern European countries. The results suggest that membership in environmental organizations strengthens commitment to anti-littering behaviour, thereby supporting improved environmental quality.

A Profile Of New Hampshire's Foreign-Born Population, Ross Gittell, Timothy Lord
Carsey Publications
At the turn of the 20th century, New Hampshire had over 88,000 foreign-born persons, over 15,000 more than it has today. In 1900, the state's concentration of foreign born (21 percent) was higher than the average percentage and more than three times the current percentage of 6 percent in the state. In 1900, New Hampshire ranked 15th of all states in percentage of the foreign-born population. As of 2008, New Hampshire ranks 26th out of the 50 states.
