Despite a number of programmes to prevent HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and, more generally, sexually diverse populations, gay and other homosexually active men continue to be at heightened risk of HIV and its consequences. This paper analyses some of the reasons for this situation and offers policy and programmatic recommendations to contribute to a solution. The social exclusion of MSM and transgender individuals is an overwhelming reality in the majority of countries worldwide. The Forgotten Minority: A Cross-Sectional And Time-Series Analysis Of American Indian/Alaska Native Child Abuse And Neglect, 1993-2003, Linda Kaye Ketcher

This dissertation examines the rate of reported AI/AN child abuse from 1993-2003 for the 20 U. S. states with the largest percentages of AI/AN populations. Research on child abuse and neglect from at least two bodies of literature is examined - one on child abuse in the general population and the other on child abuse among American Indians/Alaskan Natives. Based on SAS output from pooled time series analysis, two tables were created, one for the general population and one for the AI/AN population. The results …

How Child Protection Workers Support Or Further Victimize Battered Mothers, Susan P. Johnson, Cris M. Sullivan

Peer Reviewed Articles - Public, Nonprofit, and Health Administration

This study explored battered mothers’ perceptions of their interactions with child protective services (CPS) workers to increase understanding about how child welfare workers and policies can have negative as well as positive impacts on women’s and children’s lives. The research was guided by two feminist frameworks: structured action theory and social entrapment theory. Twenty women participated in the in-depth, qualitative interviews. Most felt misunderstood and unsupported by their CPS workers and thought that this treatment directly harmed them and their children. Many batterers manipulated caseworkers and escaped sanctions, which contributed to negative consequences. Some women received helpful responses from their …

Social Work Field Instructors' Perceptions Of On-Line Training, Denise E. Dedman Aug 2008

Social Work Field Instructors' Perceptions Of On-Line Training, Denise E. Dedman

Dissertations

Social work has recently identified the field placement as the signature pedagogy of the profession, yet little has been done to identify the best means of training field instructors to supervise students in their field placements. This study addressed attitudes and perceptions of social work field instructors regarding on-line training in their roles. While previous studies of university social work program field placement directors had been conducted, there exist no broad studies of the field instructors' perceptions. Some earlier qualitative studies of field instructors identified time constraints as a significant issue in their willingness to continue accepting interns. This, along …

Effects Of Multiple Types Of Maltreatment On Mental Health, Harland Travis Boreen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Literature on childhood maltreatment has primarily focused on sexual abuse and, in limited instances, physical abuse. Typically, the samples are limited to females. In addition, the effect of multiple types of maltreatment (psychological, physical, and sexual abuse) on mental health, and whether outcomes vary by gender were evaluated. The sample consisted of an archival data set from students who attended a southern California university. This study used a sample that included 131 females and 135 males. The results of the study indicated …
