Social Entrepreneurship In The Practice Of Deliberation And Dialogue, Roger A. Lohmann Jan 2008

Social Entrepreneurship In The Practice Of Deliberation And Dialogue, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Advocates of public deliberation and sustained dialogue, like other change agents, often embrace roles as social entrepreneurs and engage in entrepreneurial efforts in promoting their cause. In particular, this may involve locating the resources necessary to establish and engage in programs of D & D, seeking to establish the costs and benefits of such programs, and furthering research into their effectiveness.

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx Jan 2008

University-Community Engagement: What Does It Mean?, Jenny Onyx

Partnerships/Community

I want to reflect on the nature of Community-University engagement, its role, challenges and achievements. In this I start with 'engagement' and what that might mean in the context of a university-based research centre. There are, of course, many forms of engagement, but I wish to focus specifically on engagement as coproduction of knowledge. In this, our partner in the co-production of knowledge is the community, or rather civil society. I re-examine the nature of community, and the role of civil society in today's society. The article then outlines one significant research programme that emerged from the work of a …

Doing What We Know We Should: Engaged Scholarship And Community Development, Bruce Muirhead, Geoff Woolcock Jan 2008

Doing What We Know We Should: Engaged Scholarship And Community Development, Bruce Muirhead, Geoff Woolcock

Partnerships/Community

Community Engagement has become a familiar term in the Australian higher education lexicon in recent years. Professor Sir David Watson (2007, p. 1) from the University of London claims that now 'hardly any university, anywhere in the world, would dare not to have a civic engagement mission. The question is: how real, and how effective are these?'. A vital strategy to building and sustaining democracy lies in the unique constellation of intellectual, social and financial capital existing within the modern university. The key lies in the expertise embodied within the university, the socialisation role of mass higher education and the …

Investigating Racial Disparity At The Detention Decision: The Role Of Respectability, Don L. Kurtz, Travis Linnemann, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

A concern over inequity and the existence of racial disparity of youth served by the juvenile justice system has long been a topic of considerable interest among scholars, policymakers, and court offi cials. Numerous empirical studies undertaken by academics and various public and private organizations have attempted to shed some light on this phenomenon. Research fi ndings on disproportionate minority contact have hardly been uniform, leaving much of this practice unexplained. This study uses data obtained at the detention decision point over a three-year period examining variance in juvenile case processing related to race. Findings suggest that extra-legal factors influencing …

Final Report For The Evaluation Of Nebraska’S Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Program, Lisa L. Sample, Cassia Spohn, Candice Batton, Scott Chenault

Past Publications

The purpose of the evaluation of the NDCS Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Program was to assess the success of the program in three areas. First, an evaluation of the process was conducted to determine if a reentry program had indeed been created by the NDCS. Second, a cost benefit analysis was conducted to determine the economic savings that a reentry program could promote for the state of Nebraska. Finally, an outcome evaluation was conducted to determine if the reentry program was successful in its goal of reducing recidivism among serious and violent offenders in the state. Below are the …

Efficacy Of Available Treatments For Children And Adolescents With Behavioral Diagnosis As Measured By Resiliency And Cafas Scores, Laura Wickman

Master's Theses and Capstones

Many treatment options are available to children and adolescents with behavioral disorders who seek services from CMHCs. Little research addresses the efficacy of these services.

This researcher examined data from existing clinical records. ANOVA and MANOVA were calculated to determine effects of treatment setting on change in CAFAS and resiliency scores and to determine if any difference in treatment exists between those clients who improved on resiliency and CAFAS scores and those who didn't.

Clients receiving services in the office and natural setting showed greater improvement on BRC risk scores than clients receiving only office-based services. Clients who showed improvement …

The Impact Of Federal Violence Against Women Grants Upon Two New Hampshire Cities: Case Disposition And Police Report Writing, Catherine Anne Seabury

Master's Theses and Capstones

In 1994 the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was passed in the United States, and with it came a host of changes for the many cities and towns throughout the country which were granted federal funds in order to combat domestic violence.

Although these structural changes appear to have been successful, little empirical research has been conducted with the goal of accurately reporting what, if any, improvements have occurred within communities as a result of VAWA funding.

This research examines the impact of federal VAWA funds on two New Hampshire cities---Manchester, which has been receiving VAWA funding since 1995, the …

The Acquisition Of Instructional Strategies Through A Four-Session Athletic Trainer Clinical Instructor Workshop, Pradeep R. Vanguri, Jeff G. Konin

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Athletic training clinical education combines didactic education with practical experiences. Athletic training education programs facilitate the development of this instruction by preparing the clinical instructors affiliated with the program. Primarily through one-time workshops, this effort provides limited delivery of content to prepare these clinical instructors. In an attempt to identify which method of content delivery would most benefit clinical instructors, this research creates a unique methods to further investigate this issue. This study compared the acquisition of knowledge between the traditional single session clinical instructor workshop to a modified four-session workshop on athletic training clinical education instructional strategies. No Right (To Organize) Without A Remedy: Evidence And Consequences Of Failure To Provide Compensatory Remedies For Unfair Labour Practices In British Columbia, Sara Slinn Jan 2008

No Right (To Organize) Without A Remedy: Evidence And Consequences Of Failure To Provide Compensatory Remedies For Unfair Labour Practices In British Columbia, Sara Slinn

Articles & Book Chapters

Employees and unions encounter significant risks during union organizing and often see their efforts thwarted by employers. Labour law regimes attempt to minimize these risks by rendering unlawful a number of unfair labour practices (ULPs) employers can use to prevent unionization. But labour relations boards (LRBs) in Canada often avoid awarding full compensation for the harm ULPs cause, leading employers to still view ULPs as advantageous courses of action with only moderate associated costs. The author argues that this problem can be solved or greatly mitigated without the need for formal reforms, LRBs rather must come to embrace the full range …

Engaging Our Students In The Learning Process: Some Points For Consideration, Lorraine Stefani Jan 2008

Engaging Our Students In The Learning Process: Some Points For Consideration, Lorraine Stefani

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt:Over the past few years there has been considerable emphasis on the concept of ‘student engagement’. This at first sight is somewhat peculiar given that the mission of universities is surely to engage students in learning through providing the conditions and the environment in which learning will flourish! However, there are many tensions inherent in the world of academia today. The core business of universities is, or should be, creating the best learning environment for our students. In a context of mass higher education, increasing diversity of the student population, globalization and the new marketing of education, and increased …

Socioeconomic Disparities In Health: A Symposium On The Relationships Between Poverty And Health, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2008

Socioeconomic Disparities In Health: A Symposium On The Relationships Between Poverty And Health, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The disparities in health between the rich and poor are so striking, and the results so dire, that reducing the gap is an ethical imperative.

A strong and consistent finding of epidemiological research is that socioeconomic status (SES) is correlated with morbidity, mortality, and functioning. SES is a complex combination of income, education, and occupation. Theorists posit that material disadvantage, diminished control over life's circumstances, and lack of social acceptance all contribute to poor health outcomes. The relationship between SES and health often is referred to as a "gradient" because of the graded and continuous nature of the association; health …
