Peer Reviewed Articles
This article addresses health behavior change program fidelity using the five components of fidelity from the National Institute of Aging’s Behavior Change Consortia: fidelity in design, training, delivery, receipt, and enactment. Fidelity is a key issue in successful translational research projects into community settings. The authors examine four programs sponsored by the Administration on Aging that target health behavior change in physical activity (EnhanceFitness), chronic disease self-management (Partners on the PATH [Personal Action Toward Health]), fear of falling and falls prevention (Matter of Balance), and depression management (Healthy IDEAS). This article (a) describes the tools and strategies used by these …

Families And Community Partners Learning Together To Prevent Obesity, Lyn Dart, Pamela Jean Frable, Patricia J. Bradley
Journal of Extension
Reducing adult and childhood obesity is a shared community responsibility. Extension professionals can play an important role in developing collaborative, interdisciplinary partnerships with multiple community members to help reduce obesity and related chronic disease that disproportionately affect people with limited resources. This article describes how community partners learned to work together in implementing a family intervention pilot program in a low-income urban population at high risk for obesity and related chronic disease. Healthy Weigh/El camino saludable, a successful community-campus partnership, helps families learn to adopt healthy eating and physical activity patterns.

Is A Free Appropriate Public Education Really Free? How The Denial Of Expert Witness Fees Will Adversely Impact Children With Autism, Leslie Reed
San Diego Law Review
This Comment addresses how the Arlington decision, in disallowing the recovery of expert witness fees, will adversely impact parents of children with ASD who seek to invoke due process against the school district. Part III examines the controversy between parents and school districts in providing the most appropriate behavioral interventions and therapies to the child with ASD and the reasons behind the increase in IDEA-related litigation, particularly with respect to students diagnosed with ASD. Part III also explores the meaning of a FAPE, the procedural safeguards afforded to parents of children eligible under the Act, and the congressional intent behind …

Challenges For Assessing Disability Prevalence: The Case Of Afghanistan = Les Défis De La Mesure De La Prévalence Du Handicap : Le Cas De L’Afghanistan, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi
Brown School Faculty Publications
This article attempts to examine the methodological intricacies of measuring prevalence rate of disability through a population based survey using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health of the WHO and the Capability framework, developed by Amartya Sen and others. After a rapid overview of the Afghan context and the process leading to the research programme, it presents the example of the methodology used in the NDSA and the survey protocol. The authors argue that prevalence rates can be measured using different instruments in terms of impairments, activity limitations or in terms of well-being. Thus, the disability experience is …
