Community Organizations' Involvement In School Safety Planning: Does It Make A Difference In School Violence?, Joy D. Patton Apr 2008

Community Organizations' Involvement In School Safety Planning: Does It Make A Difference In School Violence?, Joy D. Patton

Social Work Theses - Archive

It is highly suggested by researchers, authors and government entities that schools involve community organizations in school safety planning and the development of safety strategies. However, there are no known studies suggesting the effectiveness of this involvement. This study investigated community organizations involvement in school safety planning as a predictor of serious violent incidents using a regression analysis. In block one, law enforcement involvement in school safety planning was the only significant predictor of serious violent incidents (p < .05). Law enforcement organizations had showed a negative relationship with serious violent incidents (t= -2.994). When law enforcement organizations were involved in school safety planning, there were lower numbers of serious violent incidents. In block two, when adding school characteristics (size, location and racial distribution) to the model, law enforcement involvement continues to be a significant predictor of serious violent incidents (p < .05) and still having a negative relationship (t = -2.058). School size (t = 7.736, p < .01), school location (t= -3.386, p < .01) and racial distribution (t = 4.125, p < .01) were also significant predictors of serious violent incidents. In block three of the regression model, violence prevention and intervention variables were added. The results of this analysis shows that law enforcement is no longer a significant predictor of violence (t= -1.829, p > .05). In this model it can be seen that prevention variables related to student surveillance was a significant predictor of serious violence …

The study was designed to examine the ability of social bonding and abuse variables in explaining the phenomena of female delinquency. An existing data source, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being, provided information-rich data regarding female delinquents from nine primary sampling units located in the North American mid-west. The data was collected from a total of 5,501 youth between 1999 and 2002. A total of 2,587 females participated in the study, and 280 female delinquents (n=280) from wave 1 were studied in this analysis. The purpose of the study was to examine the theoretical frameworks of girls' survival …

The Social Capital Effect In Nonprofit Human Service Organizations: An Examination Of Potential Outcomes Of Organizational Social Capital Related To Effectiveness, Delissa Garcia Nuno

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

The study provided for a more complete understanding of social capital theory and its applicability to nonprofit human service organizations (NPHSOs). The initial analysis included an examination of potential outcomes of social capital (e.g., human capital, financial capital, volunteerism, and program effectiveness); and secondly, the study examined possible mediating effects between social capital and program effectiveness in NPHSOs, while controlling for demographic differences. Primary data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed to a sample of NPHSOs, United Way partner agencies in the eight most populated regions in the State of Texas. The survey response rate, after attrition resulted in …

An International And Islamic Perspective Of Hamas, Amy Chiang Apr 2008

An International And Islamic Perspective Of Hamas, Amy Chiang

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Few other groups spark as much controversy as Hamas. While it won Parliamentary elections in January of 2006, its militant tactics have earned it widespread condemnation from most of the international community. However, using international law alone will not convince Hamas to renounce violence because Hamas claims to derive its principles from Islamic law. This note explores and applies international and Islamic law to Hamas's tactics and concludes that they can both be used to convince Hamas to renounce violence and restart the peace process.

Through a review of academic articles and an analysis of government statistical data, this paper will address the prevalence of reported incidents of domestic violence within same-sex couples in the state of Idaho as compared to those reported nationally. The incidents of same-sex domestic violence within the state of Idaho will also be compared to incidents within heterosexual couples at the state and national levels to access the …

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani Apr 2008

Corporate Philanthropy And The Market For Altruism, M. Todd Henderson, Anup Malani

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Academics and businesspeople have long debate the merits of corporate philanthropy. It is our contention that this debate is too narrowly focused on the role of corporations. There is a robust market for philanthropic works – which we call the market for altruism – in which non-profit organizations, the government, and for-profit corporations compete to do good works. We describe this market and the role corporations play in satisfying the demand for altruism. We conclude that corporations should only engage in philanthropy when they have a comparative advantage over non-profits and the government. Moreover, the government must avoid discriminating – …

Keeping Families Together? Exploring Placement Of Children With Severe Emotional Disturbances In The Child Welfare And Juvenile Justice Systems, Angelique Day, Marya R. Sosulski

Social Work Faculty Publications

Mona, a parent of five children all diagnosed with several emotional disturbances (SED), describes the moment she made the decision to place her daughter (age 16) into the juvenile justice system:

“…her behaviors were so bad she was assaultive to her younger siblings…in order to protect them and to make sure that her medical needs were met, because she was eloping at the time. I had to take her to court, um, file charges against her…”

Mona’s name is a pseudonym, but her story is real. In this study, parents describe the circumstances preceding their decisions to voluntarily relinquish custody …

Semiparametric Deconvolution With Unknown Error Variance, William C. Horrace, Chris Parmeter Apr 2008

Semiparametric Deconvolution With Unknown Error Variance, William C. Horrace, Chris Parmeter

Economics - All Scholarship

Deconvolution is a useful statistical technique for recovering an unknown density in the presence of measurement error. Typically, the method hinges on stringent assumptions about the nature of the measurement error, more specifically, that the distribution is entirely known. We relax this assumption in the context of a regression error component model and develop an estimator for the unknown density. We show semi-uniform consistency of the estimator and provide Monte Carlo evidence that demonstrates the merits of the method.

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier Apr 2008

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Highly-Mobile Production Technologies, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier

Center for Policy Research

We consider fixed-effect estimation of a production function where inputs and outputs vary over time, space, and cross-sectional unit. Variability in the spatial dimension allows for time-varying individual effects, without parametric assumptions on the effects. Asymptotics along the spatial dimension provide consistency and normality of the marginal products. A finite-sample example is provided: a production function for bottom-trawler fishing vessels in the flatfish fisheries of the Bering Sea. We find significant spatial variability of output (catch) which we exploit in estimation of a harvesting function.

The Impact Of Service Learning On Moral Development And Moral Orientation, Matthew L. Bernacki Phd, Elizabeth A. Jaeger Apr 2008

The Impact Of Service Learning On Moral Development And Moral Orientation, Matthew L. Bernacki Phd, Elizabeth A. Jaeger

Educational Psychology, Leadership, and Higher Education Faculty Research

Research on Service-learning's (SL) impact on students' moral development has been "mixed." In this study, 46 students in SL and non-SL sections of comparable courses offered at a northeastern Catholic university completed the Defining Issues Test, the Moral Justification Scale, and the SL Outcome Scale at the beginning and end of a semester. Although scores on moral development and orientation did not change significantly, SL students reported becoming more compassionate and more sensitive, having a greater understanding of and ability to solve social problems, and possessing a greater efficacy to make the world better. While a single-semester exposure to SL …

Homosexuality And The U.S. Military: A Study Of Homosexual Identity And Choice Of Military Service, G. Dean Sinclair Apr 2008

Homosexuality And The U.S. Military: A Study Of Homosexual Identity And Choice Of Military Service, G. Dean Sinclair

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

The Department of Defense policy regarding homosexuals allows gays and lesbians to join without requiring them to divulge their sexual orientation. However, just as in previous versions of the military's homosexual policies, the current Don't Ask, Don't Tell version continues to make it clear that gay men and lesbians are not welcome. The policy excludes persons (homosexuals) whose presence in the armed forces would create an unacceptable risk to its high standards of morale, good order, discipline, and unit cohesion (US Code 654, 1993). The purpose of this study was to examine and gain an understanding of those homosexuals who …

Self-Righteous Beneficence : American Diplomats And Missionary Perceptions Of The Ottoman Empire, 1908-1914, Ella M. Frantantuono

Honors Theses

At first glance, President Taft's praise of the Ottoman Empire's transformation seems to reflect optimism about the state of the Turkish Empire and America's role in the world. Still, the very source of this optimism, Turkey's evolution from "retrograde" to "constitutional," reveals Taft's assumption that progress for Turkey was based on adopting the "modem policies" of what he believed to be a superior culture. Taft was not alone in thinking that the event he described, the inauguration of the second Constitutional era of the Ottoman Empire, signified a tremendous improvement in the world or in linking that change to the …
