Nineteen teams presented results for the Gene Mention Task at the BioCreative II Workshop. In this task participants designed systems to identify substrings in sentences corresponding to gene name mentions. A variety of different methods were used and the results varied with a highest achieved F1 score of 0.8721. Here we present brief descriptions of all the methods used and a statistical analysis of the results. We also demonstrate that, by combining the results from all submissions, an F score of 0.9066 is feasible, and furthermore that the best result makes use of the lowest scoring submissions.

Does Content Knowledge Matter In Scoring Teacher Work Samples?: A Study Of Rater Differences, Yana A. Cornish Jan 2008

Does Content Knowledge Matter In Scoring Teacher Work Samples?: A Study Of Rater Differences, Yana A. Cornish

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The study examines the role of rater characteristics in the assessment of teacher practice as presented in Renaissance Teacher Work Samples (RTWS). The study analyzed ratings of 10 teacher work samples submitted by teacher candidates at the University of Northern Iowa between Fall 2000 and Spring 2004. These teacher work samples, created in the area of Spanish language learning at 7-11 grade levels, were analyzed to determine the impact of content expertise, amount of teaching experience, and previous RTWS rating experience on reviewer's ratings. Three study questions form the foundation for the investigation:

(1) Is there a significant difference between …

Now Have We Gotten It Right?: Exploring The Special Education Referral Process, Janine Sue Wahl Jan 2008

Now Have We Gotten It Right?: Exploring The Special Education Referral Process, Janine Sue Wahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This qualitative inquiry explored the special education referral process as understood and implemented by two first grade teachers in a rural school. Both were interviewed and their classes observed; team meetings about their referrals were attended and recorded. The results of these observations were examined through the beliefs and assumptions about teaching and learning by the two teachers.

Each teacher referred two students into the process during this study, but none of the four students was found eligible for special education services during first grade. Through a cross-case analysis of the teachers and these students, distinct differences and commonalities were …

Women Chief Information Officers In Higher Education: Voices From The Field, Marilyn J. Ziesman Drury Jan 2008

Women Chief Information Officers In Higher Education: Voices From The Field, Marilyn J. Ziesman Drury

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The lived experiences of women higher education Chief Information Officers (CIOs) were investigated and documented in this qualitative study. Three women higher education CIOs provided their perspectives on the opportunities and obstacles encountered as they pursued and achieved their current positions. These women's stories were gathered under a conceptual framework focusing on the intersection of applicable elements from gendered organizational theory, feminist standpoint theory, and occupational jurisdiction. Methods of overcoming obstacles and facilitating opportunities were discussed in relation to their lived lives and experiences. Examining institutional gendered norms accentuated the thoughts, values, practices, and processes that lead to muted women's …

Disability And Difference: Adolescents' Interpretations Based On Television Viewing, Paula Anne Schmidt Jan 2008

Disability And Difference: Adolescents' Interpretations Based On Television Viewing, Paula Anne Schmidt

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was conducted in order to decipher adolescent interpretations of disability that were portrayed on television. Employing qualitative methodology and methods, I conducted focus groups with adolescents during which they viewed television programs containing portrayals of characters with disabilities, or otherwise defining differences. The sixth grade participants freely shared their perspectives of the programs and characters in addition to their thoughts about the nature of difference in general.

Although I originally intended to interpret adolescents' reactions toward characters with disabilities, I found that it was not only characters with disabilities that they viewed in a judgmental manner. As the …

In addition, a secondary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between knowledge of physical activity guidelines, perceived importance of physical activity, and actual physical activity behavior. A questionnaire developed by Morrow, Jackson, Bazzarre, Milne, and Blair (1999) was used to determine if participants knew the appropriate frequency, intensity, …

Academic Success: A Qualitative Case Study Of Student Perspectives, Heather Marie Bentley Jan 2008

Academic Success: A Qualitative Case Study Of Student Perspectives, Heather Marie Bentley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Over the past eight years of teaching high school, I have noticed more and more high school students seem to be apathetic about their school work and academic success. I wanted to explore why students appeared to care less about their academic success. After consulting the literature, I realized the student voice was missing from most of the current studies; therefore, I wanted my qualitative study to focus on student views. In order to do so, I created two surveys: one for students and another for teachers, and I also interviewed a small sample of students after completion of the …

An Examination Of Intercultural Communication Training Programs For U.S. Sojourners In Denominational And Non-Denominational Organizations, Stuart L. Holsing

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Whether for business or personal pleasure, service projects or military service, each year millions travel to destinations very different from their own culture. The preparation of the sojourner for effective interaction in their host culture will largely determine success or failure in meeting the mutual objectives all parties involved. My experiences both as a participant and leader of seven different teams of volunteers with Christian agencies led me to investigate what training is given to equip sojourners for the challenges they will face in navigating the unfamiliar territory of cultural differences in the course of performing their mission. How is …

Harmonic Analysis Related To Schrödinger Operators, Gestur Olafsson, Shijun Zheng

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this article, we give an overview of some recent developments in Littlewood-Paley theory for Schrödinger operators. We extend the Littlewood-Paley theory for special potentials considered in our previous work [J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 12 (2006), no. 6, 653–674; MR2275390]. We elaborate our approach by considering a potential in C∞0 or the Schwartz class in one dimension. In particular, the low energy estimates are treated by establishing some new and refined asymptotics for the eigenfunctions and their Fourier transforms. We give a maximal function characterization of the Besov spaces and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces associated with H. Then we …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Objective—Atherosclerosis is a vascular disease that involves lesion formation at sites of disturbed flow under the influence of genetic and environmental factors. Endothelial expression of adhesion molecules that enable infiltration of immune cells is important for lesion development. Platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1; CD31) is an adhesion and signaling receptor expressed by many cells involved in atherosclerotic lesion development. PECAM-1 transduces signals required for proinflammatory adhesion molecule expression at atherosusceptible sites; thus, it is predicted to be proatherosclerotic. PECAM-1 also inhibits inflammatory responses, on which basis it is predicted to be atheroprotective.

Methods and Results—We evaluated herein the effect of …

Discussion And Analysis Of Missile Igc Design, Michael W. Dancer, S. N. Balakrishnan, Ernest J. Ohlmeyer

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Missile intercept systems used in the next generation missile defense system will require extremely accurate performance of all component systems. Such systems will need to guarantee successful intercept of highly maneuvering targets. as a result, such interceptor systems require much greater performance in its guidance, control, and estimation subsystems. in order to develop systems that meet the required accuracies, integrated guidance and control (IGC) systems are currently being studied. These IGC architectures infuse the guidance and control systems into a single framework thereby promoting natural synergy among the missile subsystems. Previous work in this area has relied on missile body-Based …

“Privatize Reserve Land? No. Improve Economic Development Conditions On Canadian Indian Reserves? Yes.”, Christopher Alcantara Jan 2008

“Privatize Reserve Land? No. Improve Economic Development Conditions On Canadian Indian Reserves? Yes.”, Christopher Alcantara

Political Science Faculty Publications

This paper responds to Susan Campbell’s “On ‘Modest Proposals’ to Further Reduce the Aboriginal Landbase by Privatizing Reserve Land” that appeared in The Canadian Journal of Native Studies XXVII: 2 (2007). Specifically, this paper suggests that her characterization of Alcantara’s work as supporting the privatization of Reserve lands is inaccurate. Instead, the original article and the ones published afterwards argue that it is possible to use market-based approaches to improve economic development conditions on Canadian Indian Reserves. To do so, however, does not require the privatization of Reserve lands.

Recognition And Acceptance Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Lewis Elton Jan 2008

Recognition And Acceptance Of The Scholarship Of Teaching And Learning, Lewis Elton

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: The acceptance of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) by the academic community has made considerable progress over the past few years, but it is still everywhere a minority interest in a climate that puts disciplinary research above all other academic activities. Furthermore, this situation is strengthened everywhere by features of marketisation which have increased the importance of management and finance in academia, to the detriment of the really important work of academics with which SoTL is concerned – teaching and research. In England – more than in Scotland, and it is important to appreciate that as …

Engaging Our Students In The Learning Process: Some Points For Consideration, Lorraine Stefani Jan 2008

Engaging Our Students In The Learning Process: Some Points For Consideration, Lorraine Stefani

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt:Over the past few years there has been considerable emphasis on the concept of ‘student engagement’. This at first sight is somewhat peculiar given that the mission of universities is surely to engage students in learning through providing the conditions and the environment in which learning will flourish! However, there are many tensions inherent in the world of academia today. The core business of universities is, or should be, creating the best learning environment for our students. In a context of mass higher education, increasing diversity of the student population, globalization and the new marketing of education, and increased …

Positioning Scholarly Work On Teaching And Learning, Maryellen Weimer Jan 2008

Positioning Scholarly Work On Teaching And Learning, Maryellen Weimer

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: In this short invited essay I want to raise some concerns about positioning scholarship on teaching and learning within the disciplines. As this journal and others attest, not all pedagogical work is located there, but with the recent interest in scholarly work on teaching and learning there has been an accompanying move to more firmly wed pedagogical scholarship to the disciplines (Healey 2000). I’d like to begin with what is lost when the preference is for pedagogical scholarship owned by the disciplines.

Effectiveness Of Regular Online Quizzing In Increasing Class Participation And Preparation, Michael Marcell Jan 2008

Effectiveness Of Regular Online Quizzing In Increasing Class Participation And Preparation, Michael Marcell

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Research suggests that frequent, regularly scheduled quizzing is associated with pedagogically desirable outcomes such as higher performance on exams. It was hypothesized that requiring students to complete brief scheduled online quizzes on assigned reading material before class would also result in increases in both the number of in-class questions and comments and the number of students who read the material prior to class. For each of 3 semesters, students in 1 section of introductory psychology who took time-limited, out-of-class, “open-book” WebCT quizzes on daily readings were compared to students in another section who did not take quizzes during that unit. …

Blending Online Components Into Traditional Instruction In Pre-Service Teacher Education: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Hong Lin Jan 2008

Blending Online Components Into Traditional Instruction In Pre-Service Teacher Education: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Hong Lin

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study investigated the effectiveness of using online instruction as a supplement to a face-to-face introductory technology education course. Survey data were collected from 46 pre-service teachers. Findings indicated that when traditional face-to-face instruction was combined with online components, learning was enhanced over a single delivery mode. However, the blended approach adopted in this course also brought unexpected challenges for both students and the instructor. The paper identified good teaching and learning practices arising from blended instruction and presented lessons learned for future design and implementation for blended instruction.

Optimal Science Lab Design: Impacts Of Various Components Of Lab Design On Students’ Attitudes Toward Lab, John Basey, Loren Sackett, Natalie Robinson

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Variations in science lab design can differentially impact student learning. Quantification of these differential impacts can be used in modeling – an approach we term “optimal lab design.” In this study we estimated relative influences of six characteristics of lab design on students’ attitudes toward science labs in three different first-year college biology lab courses (USA). We used two end-of-semester surveys. The first had students choose their favorite and least favorite lab and answer questions associated with the six characteristics and their choices. The second had students provide an overall rating of each lab and a rating based on their …

Designing Group Examinations To Decrease Social Loafing And Increase Learning, Lee Revere Ph.D., Max Elden Ph.D., Robert A. Bartsch Ph.D.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study examines a method to decrease social loafing in a group examination. Students who met in teams during the semester took an exam in groups. Rules for the exam, based on the Jeopardy game show, facilitated both group and individual accountability. Feedback from students indicated that compared to a class that did not have group exams, students taking the group exam had less social loafing and had higher perceived levels of learning. Furthermore, among students taking the group exams, higher group participation was related to higher perceived performance and more positive attitudes about the exam. We developed a model …
