Antidumping And Cotton Subsidies: A Market-Based Defense Of Unfair Trade Remedies, Nadia E. Nedzel
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
This article argues that trade remedies, problematic though they may be, provide a legal framework in which litigation can and must be promulgated to protect the benefits of a global market economy.
"The Little State Department": Hollywood And The Mpaa's Influence On U.S. Trade Relations, Kevin Lee
"The Little State Department": Hollywood And The Mpaa's Influence On U.S. Trade Relations, Kevin Lee
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
In this article, I argue that the U.S. government has actively advocated domestic film industry interests in bilateral and multilateral trade agreements because of Hollywood's importance to the U.S. economy, and also because of the MPAA's influential lobbying efforts. Furthermore, I show that the MPAA has intervened directly in bilateral trade relations to protect its interests, even when such interests may run counter to the benefit of the U.S. economy.

A Forensic Study Of Daewoo's Corporate Governance: Does Responsibility For The Meltdown Solely Lie With The Chaebol And Korea?, Joongi Kim
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
At the end of 1999, one of the largest conglomerates in the world, the Daewoo Group, collapsed in a spectacular fashion. During its peak, Daewoo was a sprawling enterprise with over 320,000 employees with 590 subsidiaries overseas that operated in over 110 countries. Its management received widespread praise and academic recognition for its success. Yet, when the Asian financial crisis hit in 1997, it managed to commit a deception worth 22.9 trillion won ($15.3 billion) that was termed the "biggest accounting fraud in history, surpassing WorldCom and Enron . . . ." Vietnam's Decree On Microfinance: A Flawed Attempt To Create An Enabling Legal Environment For Microfinance, Elin M. King
Vietnam's Decree On Microfinance: A Flawed Attempt To Create An Enabling Legal Environment For Microfinance, Elin M. King
Washington International Law Journal
Despite its increasing as a development tool microfinance still faces significant barriers in reaching the poorest of the poor. Microfinance programs often respond well to short-term needs but are not designed to handle the long-term struggles faced by lending institutions. To resolve these problems, many in the microfinance field have begun to tout the concept of creating “enabling” legal and regulatory frameworks. Such an enabling environment would ideally eliminate unreasonable barriers to entry into the field, encourage innovation, and reinforce industry best practices. An enabling regulatory scheme could also increase legal certainty, encourage more investors to enter the field and …
