Sense Of Coherence And Quality Of Life In Women Family Members Of The Seriously Mentally Ill, M. Jane Suresky, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet Jan 2008

Sense Of Coherence And Quality Of Life In Women Family Members Of The Seriously Mentally Ill, M. Jane Suresky, Jaclene Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Providing care to a family member with serious mental illness (SMI) can reduce a family's quality of life. Quality of life, however, can be positively influenced by the caregiver's sense of coherence (SOC). Antonovsky's Salutogenic Health Model was examined in this secondary analysis of data from 60 women family members of adults with SMI. The results indicated that greater perceived stress decreased SOC and QoL, greater SOC enhanced QoL, and SOC partially mediated the effects of perceived stress on QoL. The findings suggest the need for reducing stress and strengthening SOC to promote optimal QoL for family members of adults …

Theoretical Substruction Illustrated By The Theory Of Learned Resourcefulness (Article), Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

This article describes the process of theoretical substruction and uses this process to examine the significance of Rosenbaum's resourcefulness theory for nursing research and practice. The article discusses relocation as a phenomenon of interest to gero-psychiatric nurses working with elders who have relocated to retirement communities, illustrated by the theory of learned resourcefulness. The literature was reviewed to assess the congruence between the theoretical and operational systems suggested by Rosenbaum's resourcefulness theory. A model of learned resourcefulness is presented that includes middle-range concepts, relational statements, and propositions derived from the research literature. Theoretical substruction provides a mechanism for testing middle-range …

Post-September 11Th Representations Of Latin American Immigrants In Political Discourse: An Analysis Of Metaphor, Nick James Romerhausen Jan 2008

Post-September 11Th Representations Of Latin American Immigrants In Political Discourse: An Analysis Of Metaphor, Nick James Romerhausen

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study analyzes the types of metaphorical labels that the United States House of Representatives uses in post-September 11th resolutions to label and describe Latin American immigrants. The rhetorical philosophy of Kenneth Burke, Haig Bosmajian’s The Language of Oppression, and a study conducted in 1999 by Otto Santa Ana provide the framework for analyzing the power of the dominant and secondary metaphors found in these documents. Furthermore, this paper examines the connection between metaphorical labels and social and political attitudes toward Latin American immigration in contemporary discourse.

The Space Between Aristotle And The Bush Administration: Considering The Impact Of "Goodwill" On International Relations, Anke Thorey Wolbert Jan 2008

The Space Between Aristotle And The Bush Administration: Considering The Impact Of "Goodwill" On International Relations, Anke Thorey Wolbert

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Focusing on the Bush Administration’s post-September 11 rhetoric, this thesis investigates the impact this rhetoric had on the Administration’s perceived credibility by the international community with specific focus on Germany’s, France’s, and Great Britain’s reactions. Of particular interest is the importance of eunoia (goodwill) as an aspect of the speaker’s ethos. Considering that goodwill has been viewed as the lost dimension of Aristotle’s ethos (credibility) this analysis provides the basis to argue that goodwill should be treated as a major component of ethos.

A textual analysis of rhetorical acts as well as media reactions sheds light on the role goodwill …

The Concurrent Conferences: The Washington Naval Conference And The Far Eastern Affairs Conference Of 1922, Edward Joseph Chusid

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Washington Naval Conference and the Far Eastern Affairs Conference of 1922 occurred concurrently and were the first major post-World War I conferences to address post-war issues. The Washington Naval Conference sought to avoid the outbreak of future hostilities by reducing the total tonnage of capital ships in each signatory nation’s fleet to only that of a defensive force. The Far Eastern Affairs Conference sought to modify and modernize the relations of its signatories in China to create stability by removing many of potential sources of future conflicts due to conflicted diplomatic privileges. Both conferences had successes and failures diplomatically …

Reacting To Hitler: Polish, Hungarian, Lithuanian, And Romanian Foreign Policy, 1933-1939, Geoffrey K. Krempa

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The nations of East Central Europe have traditionally been portrayed as “victims” of Nazi German expansionism. In this work the foreign policies of Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and Romania from 1933 to 1939 were examined through the paradigm of Hitler's major foreign policy achievements to explore this prevalent notion and to discern why the foreign policies of these governments failed. These included his rise to power in 1933, the remilitarization of the Rhineland, the Anschluss with Austria, the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, and the invasion of Poland. Specifically, the reactions of these four nations to German action and their relationships with each …

The War Within: The Soldiers’ Resistance Movement During The Vietnam Era, Marcus K. Adams Jan 2008

The War Within: The Soldiers’ Resistance Movement During The Vietnam Era, Marcus K. Adams

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Soldiers’ Resistance Movement (SRM) during the Vietnam Era is arguably the most important social movement in the history of the American military. Responding to a highly unpopular war, the soldiers of Vietnam began to question their role in what many considered to be a conflict built on lies. While the government expected some resistance, the soldiers’ unity of purpose eventually forced the military to respond. This paper examines the soldiers’ revolt as it grew throughout the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in a protest movement that helped to end the war.

While providing a chronicle of the …

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin Jan 2008

Metaphoric Perspective Theory: Language To Action For The Self, Individuals, Communities, And Culture, Steven Adam Stuglin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Metaphoric and tropic language have been a hallmark of human communication throughout the ages. From ancient examples and first attempts at scholarly understanding to postmodern lexicons of metaphor theory in two-dozen disciplines, the understanding of this lingual phenomenon has evolved and grown over arguably the entire length of human history. Communication scholars note the presence and prevalence of tropic language in practice and assert the power that it may have on how humans conceptualize the world around them.

Presented here is complete theory based in these long lines of lingual thought that asserts a direct and powerful relationship between language …

The Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative: An Examination Of A Statewide Reentry Program, Michelle Lynn Corwin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of prisoner reentry has only recently sparked a significant interest in the field of criminology and criminal justice; however, it is blatantly apparent that attention to the subject is not only needed but necessary. Each day men and women are sentenced to serve terms in prison systems throughout the country. Simultaneously, each day men and women are released from prison to reintegrate back into society. With the rising incarceration rates and rising release rates, it became clear that the United States has a difficult dilemma. Thus, attention to concepts that help in addressing such dilemmas, like prisoner reentry, …

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Implications For The Distinction Of Covert And Overt Narcissism, Eamonn Patrick Arble Jan 2008

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Implications For The Distinction Of Covert And Overt Narcissism, Eamonn Patrick Arble

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Recent research has suggested that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) may have mistakenly focused on the overt qualities of the narcissistic personality disorder (e.g. demand for admiration) while neglecting the disorder’s more covert features (Russ, Shedler, Bradley, & Westen, 2008). An investigation into the psychometric properties of a measure of this more covert form of narcissism, Hendin and Cheek’s (1997) Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS), represents the focus of the present study. A total of 298 participants completed the measure, as well as measures assessing related constructs. The HSNS …

First Generation College Students' Perception Of Parental Attitudes: An Exploratory Study, Orion Peter Mowbray

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Parental support among first generation college students is largely understudied. While some argue that many parents lack necessary information and knowledge to help their children succeed while in college, this work argues that parents of first generation college students contribute a large amount of emotional support towards their children while in college. There are several benefits of receiving a high degree of emotional support, one of which is constructing a potential buffer against identity threat that many first generation college students face while on campus. Through eleven case studies, this work examines the roles of parental support of first generation …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The tetranuclear ruthenium-oxo-hydroxo-hydride complex {[(PCy3)(CO)RuH]4(μ4-O)(μ3-OH)(μ2-OH)} (1) was found to be a highly cooperative catalyst for the nitrile hydration reaction. The cooperative mechanism of the hydration of benzonitrile was established by Hill inhibition kinetics. The treatment of a nitrile substrate with complex 1 led to the catalytically relevant nitrile-coordinated tetraruthenium complex 3. The X-ray structure of the nitrile-coordinated complex 3 showed a considerably “relaxed” tetrameric core structure compared to that of 1. The hydration of para-substituted benzonitriles p-X-C6H4CN with an electron-withdrawing …

Reactions of 2-vinylpyridine with the triruthenium complexes [Ru3(CO)12] and [Ru3(CO)10(μ-dppm)] leads to a previously unknown double carbon−hydrogen bond activation of the β-carbon of the vinyl group to afford the pentaruthenium and triruthenium complexes [Ru5(CO)14(μ4-C5H4CH═C)(μ-H)2] (1) and [Ru3Cl(CO)5(μ-CO)(μ-dppm)(μ3-NC5H4CH═C)(μ-H)] (2), respectively. Crystal structures reveal two different forms of bridging of the dimetalated 2-vinylpyridyl ligand, capping a square face in 1 and a triangular face in 2.

The Community Of Nursing: Moral Friends, Moral Strangers, Moral Family, Carolyn A. Laabs Jan 2008

The Community Of Nursing: Moral Friends, Moral Strangers, Moral Family, Carolyn A. Laabs

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Unlike bioethicists who contend that there is a morality common to all, H. Tristan Engelhardt (1996) argues that, in a pluralistic secular society, any morality that does exist is loosely connected, lacks substantive moral content, is based on the principle of permission and, thus, is a morality between moral strangers. This, says Engelhardt, stands in contrast to a substance-full morality that exists between moral friends, a morality in which moral content is based on shared beliefs and values and exists in communities that tend to be closely knit and religiously based. Of what value does Engelhardt’s description of ethics as …

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling Jan 2008

Toward An Effective And Humane Counterinsurgency, Adam Patrick Shilling

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Preliminary research isolated a set of thirteen candidate principles that military officers need to understand to conduct effective and humane counterinsurgency. A meta-synthesis of eight classical theorists of counterinsurgency sought support for and consensus on these principles and discovered considerable consensus on all of them. Therefore, this set could be considered a “classical” model of counterinsurgency for use in counterinsurgency campaign planning. The contemporary global political environment is very different from that the classical theorists faced. Therefore, additional research attempted to understand the changes in the environment and in the nature of insurgency to determine the changes necessary to update …
