On The Role Of Informativeness In Spatial Language Comprehension, Michele Burigo Jan 2008

On The Role Of Informativeness In Spatial Language Comprehension, Michele Burigo

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

People need to know where objects are located in order to be able to interact with the world, and spatial language provides the main linguistic means of facilitating this. However, the information contained in the description about objects locations is not the only message conveyed; there is evidence in fact that people carry out inferences that go beyond the simple geometric relation specified (Coventry & Garrod, 2004; Tyler & Evans, 2003). People draw inferences about objects dynamic and objects interaction, and these information become critical for the apprehension of spatial language. Among the inferences people draw from spatial language the …

Ais Operation For Effective Bridge Lookout, Hsu Hua-Zhi

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The shipborne Automatic Identification System (AIS) supports its end-users with independent traffic information that is in addition to the information available from RADAR and visual lookout. AIS is able to provide similar traffic information to RADAR, however, RADAR is a standalone device whereas AIS relies on the data contributed by other AIS equipped targets. AIS has been mandatory bridge equipment onboard SOLAS ships since July 2004 and as a relatively new bridge system, a consensus among deck officers as to its effectiveness has yet to be reached. The potential of AIS to be a significant aid to bridge lookout necessitated …

Conducting Systematic Reviews For Social Policy: The Role Of Understanding Discourses In Methodological Development, Mark Pearson Jan 2008

Conducting Systematic Reviews For Social Policy: The Role Of Understanding Discourses In Methodological Development, Mark Pearson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis uses a case study of the process of conducting a systematic review in the field of substance misuse in order to analyse critically how knowledge is cumulated for the purposes of informing social policy. The analysis is grounded in two areas of social research that are seldom drawn together; the methodological (in this instance, the work of the social research methodologist Donald Campbell) and the linguistic (in the form of a measured application of discourse analysis). By means of this dual approach it is proposed that a better understanding can be obtained not only of how systematic review …

Impact Of Metal Mining On The Water Quality In The Tamar Catchment, Krongkaew Mighanetara Jan 2008

Impact Of Metal Mining On The Water Quality In The Tamar Catchment, Krongkaew Mighanetara

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This study discusses the effects of past mining activities on sediment and water quality in streams and rivers in the Tamar catchment. High trace element concentrations, both in water and sediments, were observed in streams and rivers draining areas associated with abandoned mine sites. Maximum concentrations were observed in the Gunnislake/Calstock mining district, where intense metalliferous mining took place during the 19th century. Mine waste from abandoned mine sites in this area contained up to 6.3% arsenopyrite, 5.8% pyrite, 0.3% chalcopyrite and 24% scorodite. As a result, high concentrations of trace elements of up to 180000 mg kg‾¹ As, 6500 …

On The Nature Of Fieldwork A Composer's Interdisciplinary Theory And Practice, Matthew Thomas Martin Jan 2008

On The Nature Of Fieldwork A Composer's Interdisciplinary Theory And Practice, Matthew Thomas Martin

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The following text serves to accompany a body of practical work in music (composing) and mark-making. The two elements, when taken together, are an illustration of the role which certain types of fieldwork developed by the author may offer the composer if adopted into the process of acoustic invention. The introduction sets forth the conditions in which such an approach to the relationship between the natural, the sonic and the visual becomes relevant and important. Ideas of interconnectivity are introduced and terms are defined. Chapter two deals with the ideas of connecting patterns and sets of relationships in more detail, …

Tourism And Crime, Whose Problem? : A Cornish Perspective, Carol Jones Jan 2008

Tourism And Crime, Whose Problem? : A Cornish Perspective, Carol Jones

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Relating crime to tourism has seemingly been a taboo subject among tourism experts and researchers and it may be speculated, this is because crime is not a problem. Even fewer criminologists have thought to give the relationship a first, let alone a second glance and yet evidence exists which suggests that people on holiday are not only more likely to be victimised but are also routinely let down the criminal justice system. It is also likely that the breadth of the problem continues to grow as travel becomes increasingly routine for holidays, business and educational purposes. International Crime Victim Surveys …

Cohabitation And Property: The End Of The Road For The Traditional Trust?, Paul Todd Jan 2008

Cohabitation And Property: The End Of The Road For The Traditional Trust?, Paul Todd

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

It is generally assumed that financial apportionment between cohabiting parties, when the relationship ends, is determined by the law of property, in which the institution of the trust has a large role to play. Until recently, it has also been assumed that the ordinary law applies, rather than a special law for cohabitants. The trust developed to deal with fact situations far removed from those of modern cohabitation, and it may not be the most appropriate device for the resolution of what are essentially financial disputes between cohabitants. This article examines the limitations of the trust concept in this regard.

The Halliday Report: In Pursuit Of A New Sentencing Framework Or A Catastrophic Failure?, Chivonne Boothe Jan 2008

The Halliday Report: In Pursuit Of A New Sentencing Framework Or A Catastrophic Failure?, Chivonne Boothe

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

In 2001 the Halliday Report, Making Punishments Work: A Review of the Sentencing Framework for England & Wales devised a sentencing framework where sentences – custodial and non-custodial - meant what they said, benefited offenders and society, and ultimately made sense. The new framework was designed to successfully rehabilitate offenders, reduce re-offending and reserve prison for those offenders that justify it by creating novel but ingenious ways of changing the attitudes and behaviours of offenders. The framework was to be one that generated public confidence. Changes were proposed of such magnitude that it was believed the reform would lead to …

Food Fraud, Current Issue But An Old Problem, Peter Shears Jan 2008

Food Fraud, Current Issue But An Old Problem, Peter Shears

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

Purposes: This article addresses the topic of food fraud which has been so widely and variously reported over recent months and years. Its purposes are to set current experience into an historical context and to illustrate the tension between the science of deception and the science of detection. Approach: This is a desk study of published literature and historical documentation, together with interviews with those professionally concerned with detection and enforcement. Findings: The piece concludes that with all the scientific developments and analytical techniques that seem so mind-bendingly sophisticated, there remains the basic problem of a lack of resources. Implications: …

Access To Justice - Rights Or Rations? Comparing European Legal Aid Systems In The Context Of A Shrinking Budgetary Environmentâ, Lynne Follett Jan 2008

Access To Justice - Rights Or Rations? Comparing European Legal Aid Systems In The Context Of A Shrinking Budgetary Environmentâ, Lynne Follett

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The inspiration for this thesis was derived from a week spent in the family law department of a local solicitor's practice. The UK government's reforms to the legal aid system were about to be implemented and appeared to be affecting the work undertaken as well as the morale of the solicitors working there. The discussion reviews the recent and proposed reforms to legal aid in England and Wales and their effect on access to justice. A comparison is made with other legal aid systems within the EU, examining best practices and the rationale behind implementation of reforms in order to …

Bridging The Theory Practice Gap, Judith Wilson Jan 2008

Bridging The Theory Practice Gap, Judith Wilson

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

The gap between theory and practice has long been identified as a problem in nursing and midwifery. In the past this has been described as an “embarrassing failure” (Rafferty et al., 1996 p.685) and presently there is a strong consensus that the existence of this gap is not only pressing but increasing (Spouse 2001; Landers 2000).

This article reports the findings of a qualitative descriptive study conducted. The purpose of this study was to explore the theory practice gap from the perspective of the midwifery student. This was considered to be a unique angle on this well researched and debated …

Reaction To The Reactors, Ted Eisenberg Jan 2008

Reaction To The Reactors, Ted Eisenberg

The Mathematics Enthusiast

1. A comment. I discussed the contents of my paper with colleagues on many different occasions. By their reactions they seem to divide themselves into two camps. One camp takes the stance of: Are you crazy to mention such things in the classroom? We are charged to teach mathematics, and that’s it. Who cares if Einstein never learned to swim? The other camp however takes an opposite stance: Such items are really important for students to know because they help students to think about the lives and times of the men who created the material they are studying; our lessons …

literacy and expertise from their citizens than ever before. At the heart of such demands is the need for greater engagement by students with school mathematics and science. As the OECD/PISA definition of numeracy puts it:

“Mathematical literacy is an individual’s capacity to identify and understand the role that mathematics plays in the world, to make well-founded judgements and to use and engage with mathematics in ways that meet the needs of that individual’s life as a constructive, concerned and reflective citizen”(OECD, 2003)

Values are an inherent part of the educational process at all levels, from the systemic, institutional macro-level, …

A Reflection On Mathematical Cognition: How Far Have We Come And Where Are We Going?, Kristin Umland Jan 2008

A Reflection On Mathematical Cognition: How Far Have We Come And Where Are We Going?, Kristin Umland

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Any theory of mathematical cognition and learning must ultimately articulate with our current understanding of how the mind works and with current theories of how knowledge is acquired from both an individual and social perspective. Certainly the human mind is very complex; understanding how it works in general and identifying the components that contribute to “doing mathematics” in particular is no easy task. To understand how the mind does mathematics, we must identify what mathematicians actually do in the context of everyday cognition. Here we discuss some of what is known and about this and point out directions for future …

Relationship Of Some Psychological Variables In Predicting Problem Solving Ability Of In-Service Mathematics Teachers, M. K. Akinsola Jan 2008

Relationship Of Some Psychological Variables In Predicting Problem Solving Ability Of In-Service Mathematics Teachers, M. K. Akinsola

The Mathematics Enthusiast

This paper examines some psychological variables in predicting problem solving ability of inservice mathematics teachers. The sample consists of 122 in-service teachers enrolled in degree programme. Five standardized instruments were used to collect the data on teachers’ mathematics anxiety, mathematics teaching efficacy belief, locus of control, study habits and problem solving ability. Multiple regression, Chi-square analysis, and Pearson moment correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data. The results show that mathematics anxiety, mathematics teaching efficacy belief, locus of control and study habits all have significant relationships with problem solving ability with mathematics anxiety having the highest and study habits the …

How Is Mathematics Education Philosophy Reflected In The Math Wars?, David M. Davison, Johanna E. Mitchell Jan 2008

How Is Mathematics Education Philosophy Reflected In The Math Wars?, David M. Davison, Johanna E. Mitchell

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Throughout the duration of what has been termed the “math wars”, many overlygeneralized statements by both sides have detracted from the quest for a solution to the conflict between conceptual and procedural approaches to mathematics study. In terms of philosophies of mathematics education, the absolutist view posits that mathematical knowledge is certain and unchallengeable while the fallibilist view is that mathematical knowledge is never beyond revision and correction. We suggest that the major mathematics education reforms have been absolutist in focus and have not reflected the changing nature of the discipline. Thus we believe that true reform will reflect changing …

Ngasala, M. Mubi, M. Warsame, M.G. Petzold, A.Y. Massele, L.L. Gustafsson, G. Tomson, Zul Premji, A. Bjorkman

Pathology, East Africa

Background: Prescribing antimalarial medicines based on parasite confirmed diagnosis of malaria is critical to rational drug use and optimal outcome of febrile illness. The impact of microscopy-based versus clinical-based diagnosis of childhood malaria was assessed at primary health care (PHC) facilities using a cluster randomized controlled training intervention trial.

Methods: Sixteen PHC facilities in rural Tanzania were randomly allocated to training of health staff in clinical algorithm plus microscopy (Arm-I, n = 5) or clinical algorithm only (Arm-II, n = 5) or no training (Arm-III, n = 6). Febrile under-five children presenting at these facilities were assessed, treated and scheduled …

Pathology, East Africa

Objectives: To determine the causes, magnitude and management of burns in children under five years of age who were admitted in the district hospitals of Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania.

Methods: In this study, a total of 204 under fives were enrolled. Questionnaires were used to elicit if the parent/caretaker had the knowledge of the cause of the burns, what was done immediately after burn injury, first aid given immediately after burn, source of the knowledge of first aid and when the child was taken to the hospital. Also the questionnaire was cited with data on the management of burns …

The Content Of African Diets Is Adequate To Achieve Optimal Efficacy With Fixed-Dose Artemether-Lumefantrine: A Review Of The Evidence, Zul Premji, S. Abdulla, B. Ogutu, A. Ndong, C.O. Falade, I. Sagara, N. Mulure, O. Nwaiwu, G. Kokwaro Jan 2008

The Content Of African Diets Is Adequate To Achieve Optimal Efficacy With Fixed-Dose Artemether-Lumefantrine: A Review Of The Evidence, Zul Premji, S. Abdulla, B. Ogutu, A. Ndong, C.O. Falade, I. Sagara, N. Mulure, O. Nwaiwu, G. Kokwaro

Pathology, East Africa

A fixed-dose combination of artemether-lumefantrine (AL, Coartem®) has shown high efficacy, good tolerability and cost-effectiveness in adults and children with uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Lumefantrine bioavailability is enhanced by food, particularly fat. As the fat content of sub-Saharan African meals is approximately a third that of Western countries, it raises the question of whether fat consumption by African patients is sufficient for good efficacy. Data from healthy volunteers have indicated that drinking 36 mL soya milk (containing only 1.2 g of fat) results in 90% of the lumefantrine absorption obtained with 500 mL milk (16 g fat). African …

Pathology, East Africa

This article presents the results of an expert consultation meeting aimed at evaluating the safety and public health implications of administering supplemental iron to infants and young children in malaria-endemic areas. Participants at this meeting that took place in Lyon, France on June 12-14, 2006 reached consensus on several important issues related to iron supplementation for infants and young children in malaria-endemic areas. The conclusions in this report apply specifically to regions where malaria is endemic.
