Learning From Near Misses In Medication Errors: A Bayesian Approach, Jessica A. Myers, Francesca Dominici, Laura Morlock Dec 2008

Learning From Near Misses In Medication Errors: A Bayesian Approach, Jessica A. Myers, Francesca Dominici, Laura Morlock

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Medical errors originating in health care facilities are a significant source of preventable morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Voluntary error report systems that collect information on the causes and contributing factors of medi- cal errors regardless of the resulting harm may be useful for developing effective harm prevention strategies. Some patient safety experts question the utility of data from errors that did not lead to harm to the patient, also called near misses. A near miss (a.k.a. close call) is an unplanned event that did not result in injury to the patient. Only a fortunate break in the chain of …

Land Use Cases Highlight Lessons, Evolving Patterns: The Year In Review, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

New York courts busily decided a multitude of land use cases in 2008 due to the increased growth in magnitude and complexity of land use issues. This year, as in the past, the authors summarize some of the most important cases. This year’s cases include the following topics: judicial deference to land use board decisions, zoning boards of appeals discretion, standard local practice, the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, statute of limitations, affordable housing, and eminent domain.

Selectivity In Imaging The First Emperor, K. E. Brashier

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

The story of Qin may vaunt grandiose armies and new empires that encompass all under heaven, but it also extends to more humble images:

Li Si, [the chief minister of Qin], was a man of Shangcai in Chu. In his youth, when he was a minor clerk in the province, he noticed rats eating filth in the latrines of the clerks’ hostel; and if they approached a man or dog, they were generally scared of them. But when Si entered a granary, he observed that the rats in the granary were eating the stored-up grain, living underneath the main chamber …

Guidance For Sustainable Tourism In Kotzebue, Alaska, Annabelle C. Alvite Dec 2008

Guidance For Sustainable Tourism In Kotzebue, Alaska, Annabelle C. Alvite

Rural Development

Tourism once thrived in Kotzebue, a rural largely Iñupiat Eskimo community in Northwest Alaska. Today there is very little evidence of the summer tourism that once characterized this remote Arctic town. Trends suggest a revival of tourism in Kotzebue, though little is being done to prepare for an almost inevitable rebirth. This research is intended to identify local concerns about tourism, the current state of tourism and offer guidance for sustainable tourism. Qualitative and inductive research was conducted to understand local feelings about tourism and possible reasons past tourism levels could not be sustained. Suggestions are given for a new …

Buddy Reading For Reading Comprehension Growth And Reading Engagement, Kimberly L. Triplett Dec 2008

Buddy Reading For Reading Comprehension Growth And Reading Engagement, Kimberly L. Triplett

Education

"Teachers wonder how to motivate students to become better readers. Teachers of older remedial readers are challenged to provide reading material at students' reading levels relevant enough for them to want to read. Students are less likely to learn strategies to help them comprehend text if they are not engaged with the material. This project provided seventh grade remedial reading students a purpose for reading books at their level by reading children's picture books to first grade students. Prior to the buddy reading sessions, seventh grade students practiced reading with expression and fluency. In addition, their teacher taught cognitive strategies …

Sensitivity Of Boreal Forest Carbon Dynamics To Long-Term (1989-2005) Throughfall Exclusion In Interior Alaska), Sarah A. Runck Dec 2008

Sensitivity Of Boreal Forest Carbon Dynamics To Long-Term (1989-2005) Throughfall Exclusion In Interior Alaska), Sarah A. Runck

Forest Sciences

"The objective of this study was to assess the effect of throughfall exclusion (1989-2005) on forest vegetation and soil in upland and floodplain landscape positions. In uplands, imposed drought reduced soil moisture at 5, 10, and 20 cm depths and increased soil C storage by slowing decomposer activity at the surface. In the drought plots, aboveground tree growth was reduced and root biomass in mineral soil was increased. In floodplains, imposed drought did not reduce soil moisture as strongly as it did in uplands, though near-surface soil C storage was still increased as a result of reduced decomposer activity. Floodplain …

Remote Sensing Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella Chamb) Infestations Near Ester Dome In Fairbanks, Alaska, Douglas D. Smart Dec 2008

Remote Sensing Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella Chamb) Infestations Near Ester Dome In Fairbanks, Alaska, Douglas D. Smart

Forest Sciences

"Mapping trembling aspen stands (Populous tremuloides Michx.) versus Alaskan birch (Betula neoalaskana Sarg.) in interior Alaska is possible as a byproduct of remote sensing aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella Chamb.) damage. P. populiella is a defoliator of trembling aspen that has been observed in epidemic proportions in Alaska since 2001. Where it is observed it is ubiquitous. Unlike most remote sensing studies of insect damage, I found no significant change in the near-infrared related to leaf miner damage. The feeding morphology of P. populiella is different from most other leaf defoliating insects. P. populiella feeds only in the epidermal tissue …

“Fate Must Find Someone To Speak Through”: Christianity, Ragnarök, And The Loss Of Icelandic Independence In The Eyes Of The Icelanders As Illustrated By Gísla Saga Súrssonar, Grete E. Mjolsnes Dec 2008

“Fate Must Find Someone To Speak Through”: Christianity, Ragnarök, And The Loss Of Icelandic Independence In The Eyes Of The Icelanders As Illustrated By Gísla Saga Súrssonar, Grete E. Mjolsnes

English

Iceland surrendered political control to the Norwegian monarchy in 1262, but immediately resented their choice. The sagas about reliance on the Norwegians, clearly illustrating that the Icelanders knew where this path was leading them. Gísla Saga is a particularly interesting text to examine in light of the contemporaneous political climate, as it takes place in the years leading up to the conversion but was written between the conversion and the submission to Norwegian rule. Though Gísla does not explicitly comment on either the conversion or the increase in Norwegian influence, close examination illuminates ambiguity in the portrayal of Christian and …

An Engineering Study To Investigate The Methane Hydrate Resource Potential Associated With The Barrow Gas Fields In Alaska, Praveen Kumar Singh Dec 2008

An Engineering Study To Investigate The Methane Hydrate Resource Potential Associated With The Barrow Gas Fields In Alaska, Praveen Kumar Singh

Engineering

"Previous studies on the Barrow Gas Fields (BGF) in Alaska have suggested that accumulations of natural gas hydrates could exist within these reservoirs. In consideration of future energy challenges, and the potential of gas hydrates in meeting them, a comprehensive engineering study was undertaken to investigate the BGF for hydrates, and to recommend an optimal plan for future field development. The methane hydrate resource potential of the BGF, viz. the East Barrow (EB), South Barrow (SB), and Walakpa (WAL) gas pools, was analyzed by developing gas hydrate stability models. Material balance studies were performed on the EB gas field to …

Suffering, Pity, And Pride: Complexities Of The Russian-American Adoption Relationship From The Early 1990'S To 2007, Andrea K. Neighbors Dec 2008

Suffering, Pity, And Pride: Complexities Of The Russian-American Adoption Relationship From The Early 1990'S To 2007, Andrea K. Neighbors

Anthropology

This thesis describes and analyzes the Russian-American adoption relationship between the early 1990s and 2007. In the early 1990s, an Non-Governmental Organization report depicting Russian orphanages provided Americans with pitiful images of Russian orphaned children. The report became iconic and shaped the way Americans perceived Russian orphans and orphanages. For the rest of the 1990s, Russian children became one of the most popular adoption choices for American parents; these children had the “right” race and could be “saved”. In 2005, news started to surface that adopted Russian children had been murdered in the U.S. by American adoptive parents. The Russian …

The Effects Of Scale And Spatial Heterogeneities On Diffusion In Volcanic Breccias And Basalts: Amchitka, Alaska, Jennifer Lyn Benning Dec 2008

The Effects Of Scale And Spatial Heterogeneities On Diffusion In Volcanic Breccias And Basalts: Amchitka, Alaska, Jennifer Lyn Benning

Engineering

Aqueous phase diffusion of molecules in fractured crystalline rock can play a dominant role in the fate and transport of contaminants, particularly if advective flows are very slow. The importance of the role of diffusion, typically a very slow process, also becomes an important mechanism to consider if the contaminants are long-lived in the subsurface, and thus their fate and transport must be considered over very long time-scales. Owing to the inherently heterogeneous nature of the subsurface, quantification of diffusive transport in the subsurface is extremely complex. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the …

The New European Choice-Of-Law Revolution, Ralf Michaels Dec 2008

The New European Choice-Of-Law Revolution, Ralf Michaels

Faculty Scholarship

Conflict of laws in Europe was long viewed by outsiders as formalist, antiquated, and uninteresting. Now that the European Union has become more active in the field, things are changing, but most view these changes as a mere gradual evolution. This is untrue. Actually, and fascinatingly, we are observing a real European conflicts revolution—in importance, radicalness, and irreversibility comparable to the twentieth-century American conflicts revolution. European developments go beyond the federalization of choice-of-law rules in EU regulations. In addition, EU choice of law is being constitutionalized, in particular through the principles of mutual recognition and the country-of-origin principle, along with …
