The Epistemic Necessity And Ethical Permissibility Of Randomized Clinical Trials: A Minimalist Defense, Matthew A. Schuh, Sr.
The Epistemic Necessity And Ethical Permissibility Of Randomized Clinical Trials: A Minimalist Defense, Matthew A. Schuh, Sr.
Open Access Dissertations
I argue for two main theses that are at odds with the positions of many clinical researchers and philosophers who write on the ethics of clinical research. The first is that certain types of clinical trials, namely, randomized clinical trials with double or triple blinding and a placebo group are generally necessary to establish that a medical intervention is effective in treating a certain type of disease or disorder. The second main thesis is that such trials are generally not ethically impermissible. My minimalist defense of clinical trials differs from most defenses of clinical trials found in the literature. Extended Time Off Overview, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center
Memos and Fact Sheets
Workplace Flexibility 2010 defines Extended Time Off (EXTO) as time taken off from work for a single reason that extends for more than five days but less than one year.
EXTO may be brief in nature (e.g., a few weeks), when taken, for example, for a vacation, to recover from minor surgery, or to comply with a public health quarantine request. Showcasing Student, Faculty And Staff Publications: Promoting, Populating And Publishing In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann, Teresa Fishel
Staff Publications
Institutional repositories are more than just a place to deposit faculty pre-prints, post-print, and OA articles. IRs offer colleges and universities an opportunity to showcase student senior theses, award winning papers, and student peer-reviewed journals. We have also found that IRs can provide a means of distributing campus publications in an open access environment. What began as a solution for managing student honor theses has expanded to include three student peer-reviewed journals, a campus alumni publication, and the entire series of publications for our Institute for Global Citizenship. Using the bepress software in DigitalCommons, the Macalester College library has taken …

Semantic Role Agency In Perceptions Of The Lexical Items Sick And Evil, Nathan G. Simmons
Semantic Role Agency In Perceptions Of The Lexical Items Sick And Evil, Nathan G. Simmons
Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by an ongoing debate in the clinical sciences concerning the value of evil as a label for human behavior (Mowrer 1960, Staub 1999, Wellman 2000, Williams 2004 etc.), this thesis examines the semantic role of AGENT in the lexical items sick and evil. Williams makes the argument that the label evil removes responsibility from the doctor, whereas, the label sick empowers the doctor in bringing about a cure. While this view is not universally accepted in the field, it does bring to light an interesting question in applied linguistic semantics as to the assignment of agency with respect to …

An Attribute Model For Analyzing The Relative Value, Market Share And Yearly Shipments Of Newly Produced General Aviation Airplanes, Mitchell R. Cannon
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The airplane manufacturing industry has evolved into a low production rate –high unit price environment. The ability of manufacturers to easily and quickly estimate airplane market value, market share and yearly shipments during the conceptual design phase of product development has become increasingly important. The purpose of this review was to explore the influence attributes affecting the value of newly produced general aviation airplanes utilizing attribute based product valuation, market share and yearly shipments regression models.
Conclusions derived from the critical analysis are: (1) product valuation models exist and are abundant, (2) many of the product valuation models are either …
