Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth Nov 2008

Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Many different numeric models have been created to address a variety of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering applications. Each utilizes formulations and numeric methods to represent processes such as contaminant transport, coastal circulation, and watershed runoff. Although one process may be adequately represented by a model, this does not guarantee that another process will be represented even if that process is similar. For example, a model that computes subcritical flow does not necessarily compute supercritical flow. Selecting an appropriate numeric model for a situation is a prerequisite to obtaining accurate results. Current policies and resources do not provide adequate guidance in …

Construction Of An Indiana Water Monitoring Inventory Using The Google Maps Api, Jae Sung Kim, Laura Esman, Jane Frankenberger Nov 2008

Construction Of An Indiana Water Monitoring Inventory Using The Google Maps Api, Jae Sung Kim, Laura Esman, Jane Frankenberger

GIS Day

The Indiana Water Monitoring Inventory is a portal for locating water monitoring information conducted by a variety of government agencies and organizations in the state of Indiana. The goal of this project was to implement a web site through which potential users of monitoring information can find location and attributes of water monitoring sites. To accomplish this, the user interface was developed with Google Maps Application Programming Interface (API). Basic functionality of displaying geographic information, the database structure, loading data, interaction between PHP and Java Script and the user interface will be described in the presentation. The inventory can be …

Analysis Of Pump Oil And Alkanes Evaporation, Nathaniel A. Waldstein Nov 2008

Analysis Of Pump Oil And Alkanes Evaporation, Nathaniel A. Waldstein

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There are many products, including hard drives, which require trace amounts, on the order of several mg, of lubricants for proper operation. The following study investigated the evaporation rates of pump oil and several alkanes, which have a wide range of applications, using a thermogravimetric machine. Both static and dynamic temperature tests were conducted. The rate of evaporation of the test specimen was determined as the percentage of mass loss per unit time. Using the Arrhenius Equation, the activation energy of the evaporation process, Ea, can be calculated as the slope of the best fit line for a plot of …

Linking Health Hazards And Environmental Justice: A Case Study In Houston, Texas, Marilyn Marie Williams Nov 2008

Linking Health Hazards And Environmental Justice: A Case Study In Houston, Texas, Marilyn Marie Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to extend quantitative research on environmental justice and address methodological limitations of previous studies by: (a) using new indicators of exposure to air pollution and contemporary risk modeling techniques; (b) assessing disparities in human health risks, instead of focusing only on potential exposure or proximity to pollution sources; and (c) using multivariate regression models that consider the effects of spatial dependence. The case study examines racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in the geographic distribution of exposure to airborne toxic emissions from industrial point sources in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria metropolitan statistical area. Industrial pollution sources for this study comprise facilities …

Pfisr Nightside Observations Of Naturally Enhanced Ion Acoustic Lines, And Their Relation To Boundary Auroral Features, R. G. Michell, K. A. Lynch, C. J. Heinselman, H. C. Stenbaek-Nielsen Nov 2008

Pfisr Nightside Observations Of Naturally Enhanced Ion Acoustic Lines, And Their Relation To Boundary Auroral Features, R. G. Michell, K. A. Lynch, C. J. Heinselman, H. C. Stenbaek-Nielsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present results from a coordinated camera and radar study of the auroral ionosphere conducted during March of 2006 from Poker Flat, Alaska. The campaign was conducted to coincide with engineering tests of the first quarter installation of the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR). On 31 March 2006, a moderately intense auroral arc, (~10 kR at 557.7 nm), was located in the local magnetic zenith at Poker Flat. During this event the radar observed 7 distinct periods of abnormally large backscattered power from the F-region. These were only observed in the field-aligned radar beam, and radar spectra from these …

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay Nov 2008

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.

Concentrated Rural Poverty And The Geography Of Exclusion, Daniel T. Lichter, Domenico Parisi Nov 2008

Concentrated Rural Poverty And The Geography Of Exclusion, Daniel T. Lichter, Domenico Parisi

Carsey Publications

One-half of rural poor are segregated in high-poverty areas, a new policy brief co-published by the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire and Rural Realities. This brief highlights the challenges faced by America's rural poor, particularly as they are physically and socially isolated from middle-class communities that might offer economic opportunities.
