Nitrogen And Substrate Assessment For First-Year Pot-In-Pot Production In The Intermountain West., Jaydee Gunnell, Paul R. Grossl, Roger Kjelgren

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

We investigated optimum nitrogen rates and different growth substrates for short-term finish production of container and bare root shade tree liners in a pot-in-pot production system in the Intermountain West. In one study, nitrogen ranging from 0–27 g N·tree–1 (0–36 lbs N·1000 ft–2) as urea was applied to quaking aspen n (Populus tremuloides), ‘Autumn Blaze’ maple (Acer × freemannii ‘Autumn Blaze’),'Chanticleer’ flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’), and ‘Canada Red’ chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’). Twenty-six liter liners (#7 container) were transplanted into 57 liter (#15) containers in a retail nursery finishing pot-in-pot system. Trunk diameter growth and shoot-tip elongation measurements …

Evidence Of A Novel Rna Secondary Structure In The Coding Region Of Hiv-1 Pol Gene., Qi Wang, Ian Barr, Feng Guo, Christopher Lee Dec 2008

Evidence Of A Novel Rna Secondary Structure In The Coding Region Of Hiv-1 Pol Gene., Qi Wang, Ian Barr, Feng Guo, Christopher Lee

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

RNA secondary structures play several important roles in the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) life cycle. To assess whether RNA secondary structure might affect the function of the HIV protease and reverse transcriptase genes, which are the main targets of anti-HIV drugs, we applied a series of different computational approaches to detect RNA secondary structures, including thermodynamic RNA folding predictions, synonymous variability analysis, and covariance analysis. Each method independently revealed strong evidence of a novel RNA secondary structure at the junction of the protease and reverse transcriptase genes, consisting of a 107-nucleotide region containing three stems, A, B, and C. First, …

Globalization And Post-Secondary Education Policy In Canada:A Review Of Trends, Dale Kirby Dec 2008

Globalization And Post-Secondary Education Policy In Canada:A Review Of Trends, Dale Kirby

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

In 2005, provincial governments in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador each commissioned comprehensive public post-secondary education and training system reviews. While there are considerable differences between the systems and policy approaches in these jurisdictions, the final reports of each of these reviews provide an interesting repository of current post-secondary policy tendencies in Canada. The principal arguments and recommendations put forward in the review reports demonstrate the pervasive influence of economic globalization and the continuing shift to a more utilitarian and market-oriented ideological outlook on post-secondary education’s raison d'être. The policies advocated by both reviews illustrate, to varying extents, the impact …

Female Participation In The Police Promotion Process: Are Women Competing For Promotion In Numbers Proportionate To Their Statistical Representation In Policing?, Brent Shea Dec 2008

Female Participation In The Police Promotion Process: Are Women Competing For Promotion In Numbers Proportionate To Their Statistical Representation In Policing?, Brent Shea

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the participation rate and success of female officers in the police promotion process viewed within the theoretical context of organizational culture, systemic discrimination, and the pipeline and glass ceiling theories. A survey of female officers employed with the Ontario Police Services between 2000 and 2007 was conducted. The findings reveal that although the challenges and obstacles faced by women have not disappeared, encouraging progress has been made. For both the sergeant and staff sergeant ranks, women are seeking promotion in proportions that exceed the historic and weighted seniority requirements associated with police promotions that previously required pre-determined …

Decentralized Administrations And Decision-Making & Effective Policy Implementation: A Study Of Agricultural Severance In Southwestern Ontario 2001 To 2007, Paul Hicks

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines agricultural severance activity, specifically lot creation in agriculturally designated land, in Southwestern Ontario between 2001 and 2007. Data on the number of lots created in agriculturally designated areas in 10 rural municipalities was collected and compared to information on the planning and decision-making structures of the municipalities. The findings reveal that there is a relationship between decentralized administrative and decision-making bodies and the granting of agricultural severances.

Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo Dec 2008

Healthcare Expenditure Vs Healthcare Outcomes: A Comparison Of 25 World Health Organization Member Countries, Stevan Hidalgo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This study attempts to determine whether there is a correlation between a country's per capita expenditure on healthcare and its healthcare outcomes. Prior studies have been done to assess access experiences and variations by income in various countries, and to compare the US's multi-payer system to countries with universal or national health insurance. Researchers and authors agree that certain elements of a country's healthcare system are superior, while others are inferior, and that these elements combined would produce a healthcare system with first-rate outcomes, high patient satisfaction, and universal access to healthcare for all citizens. This study was carried out …

Relationship Of Emotional Intelligence Of Healthcare Leaders And Measures Of Employee Satisfaction And Turnover, Karen Jarman Dec 2008

Relationship Of Emotional Intelligence Of Healthcare Leaders And Measures Of Employee Satisfaction And Turnover, Karen Jarman

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A 2007 projection of nursing shortages predicts that the United States shortage of registered nurses will be approximately 340,000 in 2020 and that the average age of a nurse will be 45. (Auergach, Buerhaus et al. 2007) Many healthcare facilities already have perennial openings for nurses, ultrasonographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and other hard-to fill positions. The cost of filling any vacancy is the subject of many articles and sleepless nights for health care administrators. Headhunters make cold calls to recruit candidates to fill their positions. And healthcare administrators are looking for a way to stop the flow of critical personal …

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors Dec 2008

Representative Juries: Examining The Initial And Eligible Pools Of Jurors

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

State law provides that master jury lists are comprised by combining the lists of registered voters and registered drivers in the state of Nebraska. There have been anecdotal concerns that because minorities may be less likely to be registered to vote and less likely to be registered to drive, the current source lists may not effectively achieve a representative master list. The findings of this examination support this assertion. Based on an examination of juror qualification forms from 8 of Nebraska’s most diverse counties, data indicate that there are significant racial disparities in the initial and eligible pools of jurors. …

"George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People": Hip Hop, Public Discourse And Black Politics In The Early 21st Century, Hazel Bell James Cole

Dissertations

Recently, more scholars are examining hip hop as a powerful cultural, communicative force, yet hip hop's political orientation goes unnoticed. This study highlights the politics found in hip hop culture and in rap music since 2000 by exploring hip hop as a social movement. This study utilizes a critical, cultural approach by applying ideological case study and textual analyses methods. Song lyrics, activist efforts and black politics prove the political orientation of hip hop culture, which revealed that rap music in general is limited by capitalistic, hegemonic restraints juxtaposed to rappers serving as the legitimate voice of the marginalized and …

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer Dec 2008

No. 22: South African Government And Civil Society Responses To Zimbabwean Migration, Tara Poizer

Southern African Migration Programme

This policy brief discusses a key paradox in relation to Zimbabwean migration into South Africa. While Zimbabwean migration since 2000 has been the largest concentrated flow in South African history, South Africa’s reaction to this movement has been characterised by the attempt to continue with ‘business as usual’ and ‘no crisis’ responses.1 Compared with most other developed and developing countries, where an inflow of tens or hundreds of thousands of people is usually treated as a political crisis, such a non-response to over a million immigrants requires explanation.

The lack of commensurate responses is especially noticeable within the various departments …

Recounting The Hurricane Of 1938: Local Memories Of A Regional Disaster, Syma A. Ebbin

Wrack Lines

The Hurricane of 1938 was one of those defining moments that divide time into parts that either precede or follow. It was transformative, impacting human lives and settlements as well as natural systems, coastal and inland, aquatic and terrestrial, with a force unsurpassed in the region’s living memory. Seventy years have now passed since that hurricane made its historic landfall on the afternoon of September 21, 1938. Humans have regrouped and rebuilt and nature has regenerated and reclaimed, but the memories of those who lived through the Hurricane of ‘38 remain.

This papers presents results from a productivity study of these two newcomers with MPI, the de- facto standard for parallel programming.

Geothermal (Ground-Source) Heat Pumps: Market Status, Barriers To Adoption, And Actions To Overcome Barriers, Patrick J. Hughes Dec 2008

Geothermal (Ground-Source) Heat Pumps: Market Status, Barriers To Adoption, And Actions To Overcome Barriers, Patrick J. Hughes

United States Department of Energy: Publications

More effective stewardship of our resources contributes to the security, environmental sustainability, and economic well-being of the nation. Buildings present one of the best opportunities to economically reduce energy consumption and limit greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs), sometimes called ground-source heat pumps, have been proven capable of producing large reductions in energy use and peak demand in buildings. However, GHPs have received little attention at the policy level as an important component of a national strategy. Have policymakers mistakenly overlooked GHPs, or are GHPs simply unable to make a major contribution to the national goals for various reasons? …

A Study Of Entrepreneur And Small Businesses' Required Returns And Empirical Observation Of Actual Entrepreneurial Returns Attained, Charles John Conrick, Iv

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The purpose of this study was to examine previous literature on Entrepreneurs’ and small businesses’ (hereinafter simply, Entrepreneurs) required rates of return coupled with empirical observation of small business returns. It is hoped that this study provides Entrepreneurs with a guideline of what they should expect to earn in the marketplace given the risk they take coupled with an analysis of what actually has happened. Previous returns were compiled from the Institute of Business Appraisers (IBA) database of small business sales from the years 1982 to 2000. Additionally, publicly traded, large company earnings and returns were gathered for the same …
