State Of The U.S. Military Reserve Components, Ralph Wipfli Mr., Dallas D. Owens Dr. Jun 2008

State Of The U.S. Military Reserve Components, Ralph Wipfli Mr., Dallas D. Owens Dr.

Articles & Editorials

Key Insights from this seminar were (1) Without significant participation by the Reserve Components (RC), effective current and near future military operations and domestic emergency response would not be possible. (2) The current debate about designation of the RC as operational or strategic is largely artificial and unproductive; the RC have periodically performed major operations, constantly conducted domestic operations, and been part of all past war plans; the difference now is that the current high operational tempo makes obvious the centrality of these forces for successful operations. (3) Leveraging the civilian capacities and knowledge of the RC in missions abroad …

All I’M Askin’ Is For A Little Respect: How Can We Promote Civility In Our Classrooms?, Susan D. Baker, Debra R. Comer, M. Linda Martinak

Organization Management Journal

Across geographical regions and academic disciplines, faculty members are lamenting the rise in behavior problems in the classroom. We present here a review of the literature on classroom incivility and a categorization of uncivil behaviors. Next, attributing classroom incivility, in part, to cultural characteristics of our current undergraduates, we compare Millennials to earlier generations and discuss the impact of specific cultural characteristics on their classroom behavior. Then, using transactional and transformational leadership theories to frame our recommendations, we combine insights from research on Millennial culture to offer pedagogical methods for helping to prevent incivility, as well as how to respond …

Vehicle-Vehicle Channel Models For The 5 Ghz Band, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak Jun 2008

Vehicle-Vehicle Channel Models For The 5 Ghz Band, Indranil Sen, David W. Matolak

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we describe the results of a channel measurement and modeling campaign for the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) channel in the 5-GHz band. We describe measurements and results for delay spread, amplitude statistics, and correlations for multiple V2V environments. We also discuss considerations used in developing statistical channel models for these environments and provide some sample results. Several statistical channel models are presented, and using simulation results, we elucidate tradeoffs between model implementation complexity and fidelity. The channel models presented should be useful for system designers in future V2V communication systems.

From The New Middle Ages To A New Dark Age: The Decline Of The State And U.S. Strategy, Phil Williams Dr. Jun 2008

From The New Middle Ages To A New Dark Age: The Decline Of The State And U.S. Strategy, Phil Williams Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Security and stability in the 21st century have little to do with traditional power politics, military conflict between states, and issues of grand strategy. Instead they revolve around the disruptive consequences of globalization, declining governance, inequality, urbanization, and nonstate violent actors. The author explores the implications of these issues for the United States. He proposes a rejection of “stateocentric” assumptions and an embrace of the notion of the New Middle Ages characterized, among other things, by competing structures, fragmented authority, and the rise of “no-go” zones. He also suggests that the world could tip into a New Dark Age. He …

An Experimental Study On U-Commerce Adoption: Impact Of Personalization And Privacy Concerns, H. Sheng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Ubiquitous commerce (u-commerce) represents “anytime, anywhere” commerce. U-commerce can provide a high level of personalization, which can bring significant benefits to customers. However, privacy is a major concern to customers and an obstacle to the adoption of u-commerce. This research examines how personalization and context can impact customers’ privacy concerns as well as intention to adopt u-commerce applications. As u-commerce is new and emerging, we used the scenario-based approach to operationalize personalization and context in an experimental study. The experimental results show that the effects of personalization on customers’ privacy concerns and adoption intention are situation dependent.

The Transition From Unincorporated Community To Municipality In The South Valley, Joshua M. Akers Jun 2008

The Transition From Unincorporated Community To Municipality In The South Valley, Joshua M. Akers

BBER Publications

The South Valley is a diverse area at the heart of the rural-urban interface in the Middle Rio Grande Valley. The proposition of forming a municipality in this area is full of possibility and rife with challenges. It is the intent of this report to offer some assistance with the process of incorporation and to offer an examination, however brief and incomplete, of issues of concern that will accompany any incorporation. The report consists of three parts: a historical review of incorporation in New Mexico and the Southwestern United States; an examination of geographical, social and political issues unique to …

Knowledge In Sheep's Clothing: How Science Informs American Diplomacy, Elizabeth L. Chalecki May 2008

Knowledge In Sheep's Clothing: How Science Informs American Diplomacy, Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

Advances in modern science are now shaping both the character and content of international relations. Scientific issues in international diplomacy such as environmental issues, space policy, biotechnology and stem cell uses, and weapons technology will all require the participation of an epistemic community of scientists alongside traditional diplomats. This article will examine three historical cases of American diplomacy in which science made a significant contribution to the outcome: the German–American Pork War of 1880–1891, the International Geophysical Year of 1956–1957, and the Montreal Protocol of 1987. In each instance, by utilizing scientists and their knowledge, the United States was able …

The Globally Responsible Leader, Bertha-Lucia Fries May 2008

The Globally Responsible Leader, Bertha-Lucia Fries

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In recent years there has been a dramatic expansion of what I call Global Responsibility (GR)-a new dynamic force for change in business, government, and other organizations. GR integrates into one inclusive model the emergent ("fragmented") models generally known as: Business Ethics, Corporate Citizenship, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Eco-Efficiency, Ethics and Development, Sustainable Development, The Best Company to Work For, and others. This unprecedented change, rather than spearheaded internally by management, is pioneered externally by the stakeholders of organizations-including consumers, investors, media, activists and concerned citizens. They are progressively putting more pressure on organizational leaders to change both how companies …

The Washington State Patrol, Accountability-Driven Leadership, And The Organizational Factors That Propelled Their Success: An Organizational Analysis, Timothy Carl Winchell May 2008

The Washington State Patrol, Accountability-Driven Leadership, And The Organizational Factors That Propelled Their Success: An Organizational Analysis, Timothy Carl Winchell

Dissertations and Theses

In January 2002, Washington State Patrol (WSP) Chief Ronal Serpas, Ph.D., implemented his Accountability Driven Leadership (ADL) philosophy throughout the entire statewide public safety agency. The initiative was intended to re-focus personnel on agency strategic goals, objectives, and performance. ADL stressed Computer Statistic (CompStat) management tenants, decentralized decision-making, and efficiency and effectiveness performance measures.

Most CompStat research has been anecdotal in nature, meaning little empirical analysis has scrutinized the implementation of these initiatives in policing. Additionally, the principal researcher could not locate any research that examined these changes in a statewide law enforcement agency. Therefore, this case study contributes to …
