What If They Think I'M Crazy : Clinical Interventions To Help Adolescents Manage Stigma Following A Psychiatric Hospitalization, Megan L. Mckenna Aug 2008

What If They Think I'M Crazy : Clinical Interventions To Help Adolescents Manage Stigma Following A Psychiatric Hospitalization, Megan L. Mckenna

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative empirical study explores how mental health professionals intervene to help adolescents manage stigma following a psychiatric hospitalization. Twelve clinicians from Northeast public school, state department of mental health, and psychiatric hospital settings were interviewed and asked a series of questions about how they support teens in combating social stigma as they return to their communities. Interview questions addressed a variety of issues pertaining to stigma, including exploring how mental health professionals support adolescents in managing the disclosure process, assessing what resources are particularly helpful for teens in this position, and addressing differences in marginalization based on the visibility …

An Economic Development Plan For Boulder City, Mel Barosay, Amber Z. Cunningham, Dollinda Fields, Silas Prince Aug 2008

An Economic Development Plan For Boulder City, Mel Barosay, Amber Z. Cunningham, Dollinda Fields, Silas Prince

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Boulder City is rich with natural resources such as abundant land, 50% of Hoover Dam's power generation at cheap rates, and a high priority right of Colorado River Water. In addition to low utility rates, Boulder City residents have the lowest property taxes by far compared to other cities in southern Nevada. Unfortunately due to needed infrastructure replacement and new expenses facing Boulder City, such as paying for a portion of the third intake at Lake Mead, revenue is no longer covering the city's expenses.

Through the previous group's (grad students of the Spring 2008 Semester) research, we combined both …

A Real-Time Traffic Condition Assessment And Prediction Framework Using Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (Vii) With Computational Intelligence, Yongchang Ma Aug 2008

A Real-Time Traffic Condition Assessment And Prediction Framework Using Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (Vii) With Computational Intelligence, Yongchang Ma

All Dissertations

This research developed a real-time traffic condition assessment and prediction framework using Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (VII) with computational intelligence to improve the existing traffic surveillance system. Due to the prohibited expenses and complexity involved for the field experiment of such a system, this study adopted state-of-the-art simulation tools as an efficient alternative.
This work developed an integrated traffic and communication simulation platform to facilitate the design and evaluation of a wide range of online traffic surveillance and management system in both traffic and communication domain. Using the integrated simulator, the author evaluated the performance of different combination of communication medium and …

Alcoholic Beverage Sales To Underage Buyers In The Commonwealth Of Virginia: Deterrence And Equality, William L. Goodman Aug 2008

Alcoholic Beverage Sales To Underage Buyers In The Commonwealth Of Virginia: Deterrence And Equality, William L. Goodman

Theses & Honors Papers

The Commonwealth of Virginia relies on the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to enforce laws designed to deter alcohol and cigarette sales to underage persons. ABC employs underage buyers (UAB) who attempt to make controlled purchases of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes.

The primary purpose of this research project is to determine if compliance checks deter alcohol sales to underage persons. Second, this study attempts to find if underage buyer demographics align with state demographics. Finally, this research attempts to determine if businesses are more likely to sell alcohol to underage buyers based on their race, ethnicity, and gender. This …

Benefits Of Case Based Instruction In Undergraduate Geotechnical Education, D. T. P. Phillips Aug 2008

Benefits Of Case Based Instruction In Undergraduate Geotechnical Education, D. T. P. Phillips

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The staged incorporation of appropriate case histories is one of the tools utilised at the University of Limerick to educate construction management & engineering students. This paper presents the author’s experience of introducing case histories in the first year of the four-year Bachelors Degree programme and the subsequent adoption of a case-based instruction approach on an introductory module in geology and soil mechanics. A post-module student survey indicates increased enthusiasm for the subject matter and a clear understanding of how key geotechnical concepts such as compaction theory and bearing capacity influence construction projects. This is a valuable module outcome for …

Risk Analysis In Geotechnical And Earthquake Engineering: State-Of-The-Art And Practice For Embankment Dams, D. N. D. Hartford Aug 2008

Risk Analysis In Geotechnical And Earthquake Engineering: State-Of-The-Art And Practice For Embankment Dams, D. N. D. Hartford

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

The nature of risk analysis as applied to earthfill dams for the purpose of safety assessment is examined with particular reference to the matter of demonstrating the scientific validity of risk constructs used to inform important dam safety decisions. The qualities and attributes of what would be considered to be transparent, credible and defensible risk analyses for dam safety decision-making are outlined. A conceptual approach to addressing the problem of quantifying internal erosion risk that combines critical state soil mechanics theory and dynamic event tree analysis is proposed. Finally, an experiment aimed at assessing contemporary capability to detect the “changes …

Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Forest Fire Prone Areas In The Southeast Fire District Of Mississippi, Mohan P. Tiruveedhula Aug 2008

Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Forest Fire Prone Areas In The Southeast Fire District Of Mississippi, Mohan P. Tiruveedhula

Theses and Dissertations

An analysis of the fire occurrences parameters is essential to save human lives, property, timber resources and conservation of biodiversity. Data conversion formats such as raster to ASCII facilitate the integration of various GIS software’s in the context of RS and GIS modeling. This research explores fire occurrences in relation to human interaction, fuel density interaction, euclidean distance from the perennial streams and slope using artificial neural networks. The human interaction (ignition source) and density of fuels is assessed by Newton’s Gravitational theory. Euclidean distance to perennial streams and slope that do posses a significant role were derived using GIS …
