Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer Sep 2008

Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

These are the words of the Bourgeois, the fictive character in Le Corbusier’s seminal book, The Decorative Art of Today. Le Corbusier’s witty attack on curtains was common in the dominant rhetoric of modern architecture in which drapes and curtains were regarded as superficial, fleeting, and effeminate. In spite of this, curtains were never a legitimate discussion among modern architects. Conceivably this explains the lack of scholarship on the use of drapery and curtains in modern architecture. In this paper I will deal with domestic interiors; exploring the correlation that exists between the re-presentation and function of curtains in …

Influencing Technology Education Teachers To Accept Teaching Positions, Luke Joseph Steinke, Alvin Robert Putnam Sep 2008

Influencing Technology Education Teachers To Accept Teaching Positions, Luke Joseph Steinke, Alvin Robert Putnam

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Technology education is facing a significant teacher shortage. The purpose of this study was to address the technology education teacher shortage by examining the factors that influence technology education teachers to accept teaching positions. The population for the study consisted of technology education teachers and administrators. A survey instrument was developed that asked participants to indicate their level of agreement on 28 factors influence on whether a technology education teacher accepts a teaching position. A five point Likert scale was used to determine level of agreement. The results of the study revealed that the factors believed to most influence a …

Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Supraliminal Bipolar Primes On Occupational Educators' Viewing Time And Perceived Confidence With Desktop Virtual Reality, M. Scott Williams Sep 2008

Pilot Study Of The Effects Of Supraliminal Bipolar Primes On Occupational Educators' Viewing Time And Perceived Confidence With Desktop Virtual Reality, M. Scott Williams

Journal of STEM Teacher Education

Virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated to offer learning benefits over traditional instructional methods in many technical and occupational areas. However, in the framework of Rogers’ innovation diffusion theory, adoption of VR in Career and Technical Education and occupational programs appears to be lagging. This study used experimental methodology to test the possibility of positively influencing the dispositions of occupational educators toward desktop VR through application of prime theory in a context of supplantation and technology self-efficacy theory. Supraliminal bipolar primes were used to test whether a positive disposition more conducive to VR adoption could be created in a sample …

Pathways To Drug And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Detained Adolescents, Dexter R. Voisin Sep 2008

Pathways To Drug And Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Detained Adolescents, Dexter R. Voisin

Faculty Scholarship

This study recruited 559 youths from detention centers (mean age was 15.4 years; 50.1% of detainees were girls) to investigate pathways that link witnessing community violence in the 12 months before detainment to drug and sexual risk behaviors in the two months preceding detainment. Through the use of audio-computer-assisted technology, data were collected on demographics, family factors, peer influences, religiosity, witnessing community violence, and drug and sexual risk behaviors. When controlling for demographics and family variables, the authors found positive associations between witnessing community violence and drug and sexual risk behaviors. Witnessing community violence was directly linked to sexual risk …

Validity And Adverse Impact Potential Of Predictor Composite Formation, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett Sep 2008

Validity And Adverse Impact Potential Of Predictor Composite Formation, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Previous research on the validity and adverse impact (AI) of predictor composite formation focused on the merits of regression-based or ad hoc composites. We argue for a broader focus. Ad hoc chosen composites are usually not Pareto-optimal, whereas the regression-based composite represents only one element from the total set of Pareto-optimal composites and can, therefore, provide only limited information on the potential for validity and AI reduction of forming predictor composites when both validity and AI are of concern. In that case, other Pareto-optimal composites may provide a better benchmark to decide on the merits of the predictor composite formation. …

What Do Teachers Know, Think And Intend To Do About Adhd?, Julie Kos Sep 2008

What Do Teachers Know, Think And Intend To Do About Adhd?, Julie Kos

School and system improvement

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder affecting approximately 5% of primary school-aged children. The disorder is characterised by severe difficulties in one or more of three areas; inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Considering that primary school teachers are often the first to notice behavioural difficulties in children, it is surprising that relatively little research has been undertaken with teachers. The limited research that has been conducted on teachers’ knowledge has shown that knowledge scores range from 50 to 70%, and most attitudinal research has merely assessed knowledge. There is also a dearth of research assessing teachers’ classroom management of …

An Examination Of The Process, Outcomes And Attitudes Of Counselor-Trainees Participating In An Experiential Group: An Exploratory Study, Jacqueline A. Conley, Michael C. Edwards

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

This exploratory study attempts to examine the impact of experiential group work training on counselor-trainees. Survey data about group process, attitudes and outcomes were gathered from 15 counselor-trainees who were enrolled in a group-counseling course and participated in an experiential group. Correlations revealed statistically significant relationships between pre-group process variables and post-group outcome and attitude variables. The non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test indicated significant differences between pre-group and post-group measures for the group process. Implications for future research are presented.

Long-Term Tanf Participants And Barriers To Employment: A Qualitative Study In Maine, Sandra S. Butler, Janine Corbett, Crystal Bond, Chris Hastedt Sep 2008

Long-Term Tanf Participants And Barriers To Employment: A Qualitative Study In Maine, Sandra S. Butler, Janine Corbett, Crystal Bond, Chris Hastedt

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although welfare rolls have declined dramatically since the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996, many of those parents still receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) face multiple barriers to employment. In response to a proposed state bill increasing work requirements and imposing stricter time limits, the authors conducted focus groups and interviews in order to learn about the experiences of long-term recipients of TANF in Maine. Domestic violence, children's disabilities, and health issues for the mother emerged as key obstacles to meeting TANF work requirements for the 28 women participating in the …

Runaway Wives And Their Matchmakers: Lower Class Women Networks In Beijing's Courtyard Tenements, 1928-1949, Zhao Ma Sep 2008

Runaway Wives And Their Matchmakers: Lower Class Women Networks In Beijing's Courtyard Tenements, 1928-1949, Zhao Ma

Global Asia Journal

This article examines the formation and operation of lower class women’s

social network in the ghettoized courtyard neighborhood in early

twentieth-century Beijing. Drawing evidence from criminal case files, it

argues that courtyard tenements provided a gendered urban space within

which women formed, extended, and maintained a flexible and dynamic

web of durable relationships. Motivated largely by individual

circumstances and objectives, this neighborhood network remained

personalized, individualized, and “ego-centered” The network did not

come into existence for any type of political movements; nor did it entail

wider female solidarity. But the physical geography of the courtyard

tenements and the development of …

Young People On Remand, Mairéad Seymour, Michelle Butler

Reports

The aim of this study is to examine the services and supports required by young people to promote greater compliance with the conditions of bail and reduce the use of detention on remand. The research addresses three main areas: • to establish the service and support needs of young people by investigating the circumstances of their life circumstances; • to examine the specific services and supports required by young people and their families during the remand process, in the courtroom and in the period between adjournments; • to address the issues and barriers to delivering services and supports to young …

Travel Demand Management: Lessons For Malaysia, Jeyapalan Kasipillai, Pikkay Chan Sep 2008

Travel Demand Management: Lessons For Malaysia, Jeyapalan Kasipillai, Pikkay Chan

Journal of Public Transportation

The growth in the number of motor vehicles has exacted costs on both the Malaysian economy and environment. For reasons such as increasing disposable incomes and poor management of the public transportation system, the number of vehicles has grown unabated and, in fact, is aided by various contradictory policy measures such as national car projects and the existence of fuel subsidies. A phased, five-pronged Transport Development Management-based approach is recommended towards targeting a sustainable transportation system in Malaysia: (1) alteration of charges on road taxes and car insurance, (2) elimination of fuel subsidies, (3) imposition of fuel taxes and amendments …

The Emerging Field Of Travel Training Services: A Systems Perspective, Michael Wolf-Branigin, Karen Wolf-Branigin Sep 2008

The Emerging Field Of Travel Training Services: A Systems Perspective, Michael Wolf-Branigin, Karen Wolf-Branigin

Journal of Public Transportation

Travel training provides a promising approach for moving persons from paratransit to fixed-route transportation services. This study identifies current funding trends and discusses the volume and diversity of services within the travel training instruction field. Measuring the emergence of this field focused on four properties of systems: intention, boundary, resources, and exchange. We used these properties to facilitate sharing of information and learning among the participating organizations. Initial findings indicated that older, established programs tended to be larger and moved more persons to fixed routes, while programs that employed their own staff rather than contracting out staff produced more outputs …

Review Of Oral Oxymorphone In The Management Of Pain, Paul Sloan Sep 2008

Review Of Oral Oxymorphone In The Management Of Pain, Paul Sloan

Anesthesiology Faculty Publications

Chronic cancer and nonmalignant pain (CNMP) is a common and major health problem afflicting approximately 40 million persons in the US. Most cancer patients, and many patients with CNMP, require opioid analgesics to obtain adequate pain relief. Oral oxymorphone is a new formulation of an existing parenteral opioid that has become available for the treatment of significant pain: acute postoperative, chronic arthritis, chronic low back, and chronic cancer pain. Oxymorphone is a typical mu-opioid agonist that is effective in both immediate- and extended-release (IR and ER) formulations. Oxymorphone is more lipid soluble than morphine, resulting in a rapid onset of …

The Joint Role Of Locus Of Control And Perceived Financial Need In Job Search, Edwin A. J. Van Hooft, Craig Crossley Sep 2008

The Joint Role Of Locus Of Control And Perceived Financial Need In Job Search, Edwin A. J. Van Hooft, Craig Crossley

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Guided by economic rational choice theory and the behavioral-coping literature, the present study examined contrasting perspectives of the role of job-search locus of control (JSLOC) and perceived financial need in predicting job-search intensity. Data were collected in two independent studies in the Netherlands and in the United States, both using a two-wave longitudinal design. Results from both studies suggested that job seekers with external JSLOC and high perceived financial need engaged in more intense search behavior to compensate for anticipated difficulties in finding employment. Findings suggested that stress may mediate this relation, and may play a positive role in the …

Teaching Justice After Macintyre: Toward A Catholic Philosophy Of Moral Education, Roger Bergman Sep 2008

Teaching Justice After Macintyre: Toward A Catholic Philosophy Of Moral Education, Roger Bergman

Journal of Catholic Education

How is the commitment to social justice sustained over a lifetime? This would seem to be a matter of character, and that calls attention to the Aristotelian tradition in ethics. No one provides as much insight into the challenge of the contemporary appropriation of this tradition as Alasdair MacIntyre. Although a moral philosopher rather than a moral educator, MacIntyre’s critique of the failure of the Enlightenment project to construct a rationally based universal ethic, coupled with a critique of the modern nation-state of liberal capitalism as antithetical to the practice of virtue for the common good, provides a challenging if …
