What Aspects Of Shiftwork Influence Off-Shift Well-Being Of Healthcare Workers?, Janet L. Barnes-Farrell, Kimberly Davies-Schrils, Alyssa Mcgonagle, Benjamin Walsh, Lee Di Milia, Frida Marina Fischer, Barbara B. Hobbs, Lijiljana Kaliterna, Donald Tepas

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Characteristics of shiftwork schedules have implications for off-shift well-being. We examined the extent to which several shift characteristics (e.g., shift length, working sundays) are associated with three aspects of off-shift well-being: work-to-family conflict, physical well-being, and mental well-being. We also investigated whether these relationships differed in four nations. The Survey of Work and Time was completed by 906 healthcare professionals located in Australia, Brazil, Croatia, and the USA. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses supported the hypothesis that shiftwork characteristics account for significant unique variance in all three measures of well-being beyond that accounted for by work and family demands and personal …

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez Sep 2008

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez

Organization Management Journal

One path to the successful transference of knowledge is through linking concepts to students’ experience. To provide this connection, we used an experiential methodology to design an exercise called mood, emotion, and affect in group performance. This exercise provides learners with an opportunity to experience, in addition to hearing and reading about, the effects of positive and negative dispositions on a group task. We describe the design and mechanics of the exercise with practical reflections from the use of the exercise in many different environments. The paper ends with end-of-the semester student comments and instructor reflections.

Meaningful Learning In Management: Recombining Strands Of Knowledge Dna Through Engaged Dialog And Generative Conflict, David Saiia, Granger Macy, Maureen P. Boyd Sep 2008

Meaningful Learning In Management: Recombining Strands Of Knowledge Dna Through Engaged Dialog And Generative Conflict, David Saiia, Granger Macy, Maureen P. Boyd

Organization Management Journal

This paper explores how meaningful learning objectives in management classes are pursued when the focus is on classroom activities and strategies that foster transformative thought, adaptive growth, and commitment from both instructors and students to achieve meaningful learning. To this end, we offer a metaphor and a context for this approach to learning. The DNA of learning metaphor details effective pedagogical practices and encourages instructors to take a more challenging and possibly transformative approach to their course design and classroom experiences.

Questionnaire Construct Validation In The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study, Wolfram Schulz Sep 2008

Questionnaire Construct Validation In The International Civic And Citizenship Education Study, Wolfram Schulz

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

International studies tend to use student, teacher or school questionnaires for the collection of contextual data on student or teacher characteristics, background, activities and the school's learning environment. Furthermore, student measures of values, attitudes and behavioural intentions are also frequently viewed as important learning outcomes, in particular in the context of studies of civic and citizenship education. Data obtained from these instruments become frequently important predictors of student performance or are treated as learning outcome variables of interest. Therefore, the scaling of questionnaire items to obtain measures of students', teachers' and principals' perceptions and attitudes should ideally be subject of …

Swosu Fact Book Fall 2008, Denisa Engelman

Fact Books

I am proud to introduce the seventeenth annual Southwestern Oklahoma State University Fact Book. The Fact Book provides a ready source of information to answer frequently asked questions about the University and its operations. Unless otherwise noted, the information in this Fact Book came from computer-generated reports that are printed following the tenth class day of each fall semester. Because of student fluctuations during the semester, numbers will not match other published enrollment numbers that may be based on enrollment at the end of a semester.

Is There A Correlation Between Law Professor Publication Counts, Law Review Citation Counts, And Teaching Evaluations? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton Sep 2008

Is There A Correlation Between Law Professor Publication Counts, Law Review Citation Counts, And Teaching Evaluations? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton

Scholarly Works

This empirical study attempts to answer an age-old debate in legal academia: whether scholarly productivity helps or hurts teaching. The study is of an unprecedented size and scope. It covers every tenured or tenure-track faculty member at 19 American law schools, a total of 623 professors. The study gathers four years of teaching evaluation data (calendar years 2000-03) and correlates these data against five different measures of research productivity/scholarly influence.

The results are counter-intuitive: there is either no correlation or a slight positive correlation between teaching effectiveness and any of the five measures of research productivity. Given the breadth of …

The Status Of Licensed Professional Counselors In Michigan Public Universities, Adriana Fox, Suzanne M. Hedstrom, Ericka L. Souders

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

This article documents the findings of a study investigating the employment status of licensed professional counselors in Michigan’s 15 public universities. Structured interviews were conducted by telephone with 85 professionals working in college counseling centers, career centers, advising, admissions, financial aid, and residence life offices. The results indicated that only a very small percentage of employees in these offices are licensed as professional counselors, and a substantial number have not received training in counseling.

Cultural Variations In Parenting And Implications For The Counseling Professional, Le'ann L. Solmonson Sep 2008

Cultural Variations In Parenting And Implications For The Counseling Professional, Le'ann L. Solmonson

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

In a culturally diverse society, counselors are faced with providing effective treatment that is culturally responsive and meets the needs of the client. Counselors have an ethical obligation to understand and include the client’s culture in treatment decision-making. Parenting norms in the United States are based upon the Western culture and do not apply to all cultural groups. This paper looks specifically at cultural differences in parenting practices among four cultural groups: African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and European Americans. Implications for practice are provided for the counseling professional.

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton Sep 2008

Leading In The Midst Of Change: A Theologically Grounded, Theoretically Informed Hermeneutic Of Change, Terri L. Elton

Faculty Publications

This essay proposes a hermeneutic of change, grounded in theology and theory, which can inform church leaders’ strategic actions in the midst of change. Drawing from the work of practical theology, it looks at four vantage points proposed by Don Browning: descriptive, historical, systematic, and strategic. The descriptive view offers two insights: God is active and present in the midst of change and God’s people are simultaneously saints and sinners. The historical perspective points out that God has always been in the midst of change, but God’s love and promises for the world have not changed. Systematic theology fuses the …

Emotional Intelligence: New Ability Or Eclectic Traits?, John D. Mayer, Peter Salovey, David R. Caruso Sep 2008

Emotional Intelligence: New Ability Or Eclectic Traits?, John D. Mayer, Peter Salovey, David R. Caruso

Psychology

Some individuals have a greater capacity than others to carry out sophisticated information processing about emotions and emotion-relevant stimuli and to use this information as a guide to thinking and behavior. The authors have termed this set of abilities emotional intelligence (EI). Since the introduction of the concept, however, a schism has developed in which some researchers focus on EI as a distinct group of mental abilities, and other researchers instead study an eclectic mix of positive traits such as happiness, self-esteem, and optimism. Clarifying what EI is and is not can help the field by better distinguishing research that …
