An Enduring Scourge: The Evolution Of Trafficking In Women For Forced Prostitution In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Elizabeth Longino Oct 2008

An Enduring Scourge: The Evolution Of Trafficking In Women For Forced Prostitution In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Elizabeth Longino

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the late nineties, in the post-conflict period of rebuilding and peacekeeping, trafficking in women for sexual exploitation emerged as a major problem in Bosnia-Herzegovina. For years, the country was considered one of the principle destination and transit countries in the region, until a combination of internal and external factors caused the situation to change. Internally, the government passed legislation, created action plans, and designated special police forces to combat trafficking across borders. Apart from these actions, regional political changes and the withdrawal of international troops also contributed to the closure of bars and brothels in which trafficked women were …

Multidimensional Self-Efficacy And Affect In Wheelchair Basketball Players, Jeffrey J. Martin Oct 2008

Multidimensional Self-Efficacy And Affect In Wheelchair Basketball Players, Jeffrey J. Martin

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

In the current study, variables grounded in social cognitive theory with athletes with disabilities were examined. Performance, training, resiliency, and thought control self-efficacy, and positive (PA) and negative (NA) affect were examined with wheelchair basketball athletes (N = 79). Consistent with social cognitive theory, weak to strong significant relationships among the four types of self-efficacy (rs = .22–.78) and among self-efficacy and affect (rs = -.40–.29) were found. Basketball players who were efficacious in their ability to overcome training barriers were also confident in their basketball skills and efficacious in their ability to overcome ruminating distressing thoughts …

Asymmetric Information Measures: How To Extract Knowledge From An Expert So That The Expert's Effort Is Minimal, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Elizabeth N. Kamoroff Oct 2008

Asymmetric Information Measures: How To Extract Knowledge From An Expert So That The Expert's Effort Is Minimal, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Elizabeth N. Kamoroff

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Knowledge acquisition is when we ask experts questions, and put the answers into the computer system. Since this is a very time-consuming task, it is desirable to minimize the effort of an expert.

As a crude estimate for this effort, we can take a number of binary (yes-no) questions that we ask. The procedure that minimizes this number is binary search.

This approach does not take into account that people often feel more comfortable answering "yes" than answering "no". So, to make our estimates more realistic, we will take into consideration that for a negative answer the effort is bigger. …

Relationship Among Essential Leadership Preparation Practices And Leader, School, And Student Outcomes In K-8 Schools, Donna Braun, Robert K. Gable, Stacey L. Kite

K-12 Education

A questionnaire was administered to school principals (N=88). The questionnaire data, along with student data, were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression to investigate the relationships among leadership preparation practices, self rated leader behavior, the school learning environment, and student achievement. After controlling for demographic variables, the amount of variance explained was incremented a statistically significant degree between: preparation practices and leader behaviors ( R2 = 5%); preparation practices and student achievement ( R2 = 5%); preparation practices and leaders’ instructional knowledge ( R2 = 6%); and leaders’ instructional knowledge and instructional practices in schools ( R2 = 5%).

The President And The Press: The Framing Of George W. Bush’S Speech To The United Nations, Stephen D. Cooper, Jim Kuypers, Matt Althous Oct 2008

The President And The Press: The Framing Of George W. Bush’S Speech To The United Nations, Stephen D. Cooper, Jim Kuypers, Matt Althous

Communications Faculty Research

In this essay, we provide a brief overview of how frames work, discuss the relationship of frames to the news media, and perform a qualitatively based, comparative framing analysis of President Bush’s speech to the United Nations and the mainstream American press response that followed. Findings suggest that by the end of formal military operations in Afghanistan, the press was increasingly framing its reports in such a way that President Bush’s public statements were inaccurately transmitted to the public at large. Three key findings are advanced: one, the press depicted the Bush administration as an enemy of civil liberties; two, …

Gender Differences In Motivation To Resolve Eating And Body Image Concerns In College Students, Harold L. Merriman, C. Jayne Brahler, Laura Dinan, Lauren Finzer Oct 2008

Gender Differences In Motivation To Resolve Eating And Body Image Concerns In College Students, Harold L. Merriman, C. Jayne Brahler, Laura Dinan, Lauren Finzer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to identify similarities and differences between college women and men with respect to their eating and body image concerns, weight fluctuation and level of motivation to resolve these concerns. 101 University of Dayton students participated in this study. Students completed an eating and body concern survey online.

Body image concerns were significantly greater for females compared to males (p=0.007) and significantly greater as motivation level to resolve the concerns increased (p=0.019). Eating concerns followed the same trends but did not reach statistical significance. Weight fluctuation in both genders increased significantly as motivation level increased …

Time-Transcendent Father-Son Dynamics In Antigone, Olivia Spadlowski Oct 2008

Time-Transcendent Father-Son Dynamics In Antigone, Olivia Spadlowski

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

In the ancient tragedy Antigone, the Greek dramatist Sophocles presents a primary conflict that features a desperate struggle for dominance and challenges the blind justification of authoritative power. Although the tragedy bears the name of its doomed heroine as its title, I argue that it is the character of Creon who provides the audience with a cathartic release through the development of his humanity in the course of the play. He is the figure most akin to the classical Aristotelian definition of the traditional tragic hero. Creon is more emotionally developed and the breadth of his humanity is greatly accessible …

The Jurisprudence Of Pleading: Rights, Rules, And Conley V. Gibson, Emily Sherwin Oct 2008

The Jurisprudence Of Pleading: Rights, Rules, And Conley V. Gibson, Emily Sherwin

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In 1957, in the case of Conley v. Gibson, the Supreme Court announced a minimal standard for the contents of a complaint under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and endorsed what has come to be known as 'notice' pleading. This article, prepared for a symposium on Conley, reviews the debate over pleading requirements that preceded the case. Unlike modern discussions of pleading, which focus on the level of factual specificity required in complaints, the pre-Conley debate was about the legal content of complaints - an question largely forgotten in the years following Conley.

The early twentieth century debate over …

Youth Engagement and Quality of Experience in Afterschool Programs
By David J. Shernoff and Deborah Lowe Vandell
Research on middle school participants’ engagement in afterschool programs shows that such programs often serve as developmental contexts for promoting “flow” experiences. Compared to when they are in other settings after school, participants in afterschool programs are more likely to experience high concentrated effort and intrinsic motivation, experiences consistent with Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow. Organized sports, arts enrichment, and academic enrichment activities were found to be particularly engaging program activities, in contrast to homework completion. The importance of high levels of engagement in …

A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones Oct 2008

A Communitarian Critique Of Dr. Phil: The Individualistic Ethos Of Self-Help Rhetoric, Eric K. Jones

Communications Faculty Scholarship

Communitarians have criticized liberals for being too focused on individual rights and responsibilities. But not many scholars have raised this criticism in the area of self-help rhetoric. To address this void, this essay formulates a communitarian critique of the rhetorical devices Dr. Phil uses to counsel guests on his television program. Many scholars have published insightful work on the communitarian/liberalism debate. This paper extends that debate by providing a moral critique of the rhetoric espoused in this popular form of self-help entertainment. Dr. Phil's persuasive appeals to his guests reveal how notions of individualism appear during the show's dialogue.

Putting Focus Back On The Family: Using Multisystemic Therapy And Regionalized Incarceration As Alternatives To The Texas Youth Commission, Elizabeth Upchurch Oct 2008

Putting Focus Back On The Family: Using Multisystemic Therapy And Regionalized Incarceration As Alternatives To The Texas Youth Commission, Elizabeth Upchurch

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

For the reasons explored in detail in this Comment, the Texas juvenile justice system should be reformed to eliminate the TYC. In its place, Texas should implement locally-managed multisystemic therapy (MST) programs that focus on eliminating risk factors for delinquent behavior and strengthening the family in order to assure long-term maintenance of acceptable behavior. Participation in MST is community- based and allows the juvenile to remain at home during treatment. This should be the first line of defense in assisting juveniles in overcoming delinquent behavior. As a result, incarceration of juveniles should be reserved only for serious or habitual offenders, …
