The Youth Empowered For Success Program: A Multi-Faceted Approach To Youth Leadership Development And School Culture Change In Southern Arizona, Pam Parrish, Mari Wilhelm, Yvette Florez-Urcadez, Daniel Jeffrey Oct 2008

The Youth Empowered For Success Program: A Multi-Faceted Approach To Youth Leadership Development And School Culture Change In Southern Arizona, Pam Parrish, Mari Wilhelm, Yvette Florez-Urcadez, Daniel Jeffrey

Journal of Youth Development

Arizona’s first Teen Institute (TI) program, Youth Empowered for Success, began in July 2004. It is the first TI-based project to focus on nurturing resilience via Health Realization (Pransky, 2007). The YES program’s design to “create conditions for success” in high schools is discussed. YES utilizes a strengths-based, multi-faceted approach of (1) teaching participants how to access their innate resilience and common sense (Health Realization), (2) training them in community development for school culture change and (3) helping them develop meaningful partnerships with adults. YES also expands upon the TI model by providing staff support for community development throughout the …

A Physicalist View Of The Passion Of Christ, Joungbin Lim Oct 2008

A Physicalist View Of The Passion Of Christ, Joungbin Lim

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

My project in this paper is to provide a plausible idea of Christ’s suffering and death in terms of a theory of the human person. More specifically, I want to contrast two major theories of the person-body relation. One is dualism. Dualism is the view that a human person is composed of two substances, that is, a soul and a body, and he (strictly speaking) is identical with the soul. On the other hand, physicalism is the view that a human person is numerically identical with his biological body. I will argue that dualism is not successful in explaining Christ’s …

Affect And The Problem Of Evil, Bruce Ballard Oct 2008

Affect And The Problem Of Evil, Bruce Ballard

Conference on Philosophy and Theology

A central aspect of the problem of evil or the argument from evil is the intensity or quantity of suffering. This quantity is conceived of as something objective and fixed. But because our experience is in part constituted and interpreted by our effectual orientation, there is no such objective quantum of suffering. But where there is no objective quantum of suffering, the argument from evil collapses. Here we begin by examining the connection between the philosophical and existential dimensions of the problem of and argument from evil as suffering. Next we consider the role of the affect in the constitution …

Creando Nuestra Salud (Creating Our Health) - Results And Findings From A Breast Cancer Education Program With Rural Hispanic Women Oct 2008

Creando Nuestra Salud (Creating Our Health) - Results And Findings From A Breast Cancer Education Program With Rural Hispanic Women

Florida Public Health Review

Rural Hispanic females practice breast-self exams (BSE) and other breast health screenings less than women from all other racial or ethnic groups. Questions remain as to why these women do not practice these important breast health behaviors. A qualitative design was used to assess the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and barriers to breast health activities among 288 rural Hispanic women. Results revealed that along with external barriers such as transportation and money, internal barriers (shame of being seen naked, discomfort of touching their own breasts, and lack of knowledge) had a greater effect on their practice of breast health activities. The …

Las Pioneras : New Immigrant Destinations And The Gendered Experiences Of Latina Immigrants, Angie Pamela Mejia Oct 2008

Las Pioneras : New Immigrant Destinations And The Gendered Experiences Of Latina Immigrants, Angie Pamela Mejia

Dissertations and Theses

Are experiences with migration affecting culturally specific gendered practices, roles, attitudes, and ideologies of Mexican women and men? Which experiences reinforce patriarchy? Which experiences transform patriarchy? This thesis proposes that Mexican immigrant women will subscribe to and enact different gendered behaviors depending upon their perception of gendered gains. Various factors, such as time of arrival, previous experiences with negative machismos, and workforce participation affect how they construct gendered identities. The context where bargaining occurs-whether itwas the home, the community, or the workplace - inform women of what strategies they need implement in order to negotiate with patriarchy. This study employs …
