The Effects Of Financial Aid Amounts On Academic Performance, Lane Coonrod '08 Jan 2008

The Effects Of Financial Aid Amounts On Academic Performance, Lane Coonrod '08

The Park Place Economist

Much research has been done investigating the impact of various forms of financial aid on college entry, eventual college graduation, and future earnings, yet little if any literature has explored the possibility of the presence of unintended academic outcomes—both positive or negative. This study looks to focus on one specific possible externality—financial aid’s impact on academic performance.

The Long-Term Effects Of Divorce And Parental Discord On The Adult-Child's Socioeconomic Attainment, Chris Davis '08 Jan 2008

The Long-Term Effects Of Divorce And Parental Discord On The Adult-Child's Socioeconomic Attainment, Chris Davis '08

The Park Place Economist

Some of the most recent divorce research suggests that a better descriptor of adult socioeconomic attainment is not divorce, nor its intermediary causes, but rather the existence of hostile and aggressive parental behavior during childhood (Keister, 2005; Amato, 2005). Accordingly, divorce may just be another measure of a more significant cause of diminished income attainment among children of divorce: poorly managed anger by parents. The present study seeks to explore these complex relationships and establish that the parental relationships in a household are as important as the legal outcome of the marriage itself with regard to long run adultchild effects.

Stock Index Pricing With Random Walk And Agent-Based Models, Scott Swisher '08 Jan 2008

Stock Index Pricing With Random Walk And Agent-Based Models, Scott Swisher '08

The Park Place Economist

The objective of this work is to empirically test the EMH and compare its results to those of a viable competitor using computational simulation. Specifically, the individual-agent approach has been gaining momentum recently as the appropriate numerical tools are now widely available (Bonaneau 2002; Cioffi-Revilla 2002; Diks et al. 2007; Gilbert, Bankes 2002; Inchiosa, Parker 2002; Tesfatsion 2002). This fact, coupled with intensifying doubts concerning the validity of efficient-markets theory, has led to intensive use of the agent-based approach with computational agent-based modeling (ABM) of financial markets (Bonabeau 2002). Although multiple theories currently compete with the EMH to varying degrees, …

Family Experience With Eating Disorders Scale: Exploring Reliability And Validity And Evaluating The Clinical Utility Of Its Use In Treatment, Kathleen M. Hoff Jan 2008

Family Experience With Eating Disorders Scale: Exploring Reliability And Validity And Evaluating The Clinical Utility Of Its Use In Treatment, Kathleen M. Hoff

Honors Projects

The family plays a significant role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders, and may be equally influential in recovery. The deliberate use of an instrument that addresses the perceived family environment is useful in engaging the family in treatment and enhancing treatment outcomes. The Family Experience with Eating Disorders Scale (FEEDS) was used in this study because it addresses the psychometric deficits common in existing general family assessment instruments and captures family dynamics specific to eating disorders. The 53-item FEEDS was design to illicit the parental perception of the family environment and assesses family dynamics specific to eating …

Reproductive Health

A situation analysis of post-rape care services available at the first point of contact was conducted in three cities in India and four cities in Bangladesh. The aim of this investigation was to gather information that could be used in the development of a comprehensive care and support system for the rape survivor. Secondarily, the study field-tested sensitive and practical tools that could be used in the future for large-scale situation analyses of the rape survivor services. The results demonstrated that there is no uniform service provision protocol to follow for managing rape survivors at health facilities in India or …

Consumer Theology: Its Causes, Effects, And Solution, R. Douglas Bailey Jan 2008

Consumer Theology: Its Causes, Effects, And Solution, R. Douglas Bailey

Doctor of Ministry

This paper claims that consumerism has permeated our culture so completely as to affect the church as well, creating a consumer theology. The thesis of this paper is that spiritual formation, properly understood and implemented in an established church, is the corrective for the harmful effects of consumer theology. Chapter 1 traces the rise of consumerism in America, noting its harmful effects on society. This chapter also introduces consumer theology, claiming that it is characterized by a commodification of the Holy; churches' becoming vendors of religious goods and services; a radical individualism; and a sense of entitlement among congregants. Chapter …

Unintended Consequences: How Antidiscrimination Litigation Increases Group Bias In Employer-Defendants, Jessica Fink Jan 2008

Unintended Consequences: How Antidiscrimination Litigation Increases Group Bias In Employer-Defendants, Jessica Fink

Faculty Scholarship

This Article examines the extent to which employment discrimination litigation conducted under the current legal framework increases the biases of those involved in this process, particularly defendant-employers. It examines whether discrimination litigation enhances and exacerbates the negative views that these defendants may have toward not just the plaintiff who initiated the litigation, but also toward the broader protected class to which the plaintiff belongs.

Part I of this Article briefly expands upon the different types of bias that can infect employers' decisions, from the blatant discrimination that largely has disappeared from American society, to intentional discrimination that employers strategically hide …

Footnote Eleven For The New Millennium: Ecological Perspective Arguments In Support Of Compelling Interest, Malik Edwards Jan 2008

Footnote Eleven For The New Millennium: Ecological Perspective Arguments In Support Of Compelling Interest, Malik Edwards

Seattle University Law Review

This Article proceeds in three Parts. Part II considers the historical and social context that led to the ultimate successful strategy in Brown. Although times may have changed, my ultimate argument is that contexts matters; as such, to fully understand Brown, we must understand the strategy behind it and the road that takes us from Plessy to Brown<,/em>. Part III considers the trends that led to Brown's undoing. While Brown I offers no remedy and Brown II provides that schools should be desegregated “with all deliberate speed,” one must understand the societal shifts that occurred, fundamentally changing the …

Students And Retirement Saving Predictors, Christopher Michael Miller Jan 2008

Students And Retirement Saving Predictors, Christopher Michael Miller

UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses

Over the past century Americans have significantly increased personal income yet decreased personal savings. The researchers in this study examine college students habits and beliefs concerning saving for retirement. To our knowledge there is no published data about retirement savings among Americans in this age group. We try to determine whether a student's retirement savings beliefs and habits can be predicted. We designed a model examining the student's risk-aversion level, financial background, general savings habits, financial literacy and attitudes toward saving. We found that our overall model is predictive of a student's beliefs and habits in regards to saving for …

Risk Preferences And The Timing Of Marriage And Childbearing, Lucie Schmidt Jan 2008

Risk Preferences And The Timing Of Marriage And Childbearing, Lucie Schmidt

Economics: Faculty Publications

The existing literature on marriage and fertility decisions pays little attention to the roles played by risk preferences and uncertainty. However, given uncertainty regarding the availability of suitable marriage partners, the ability to contracept, and the ability to conceive, women's risk preferences might be expected to play an important role in marriage and fertility timing decisions. By using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), I find that measured risk preferences have a significant effect on the timing of both marriage and fertility. Highly risk-tolerant women are more likely to delay marriage, consistent with either a search model …
