Predation By Crabs On Rocky Shores In North-East Atlantic, Ana Catarina Ferreirada Silva Jan 2008

Predation By Crabs On Rocky Shores In North-East Atlantic, Ana Catarina Ferreirada Silva

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Highly mobile predators are known to have an important influence on shallow-water habitats. There is, however, little information about the role of crabs on the ecology of rocky shores. Here I examine the extent and consequences of predation by crabs on shores in the North-East Atlantic. The specific aims of this thesis are to: investigate spatial variation in use of the intertidal by crabs along a horizontal gradient of exposure to wave action and a vertical gradient of tidal elevation; assess their use of the intertidal as a feeding area by examining stomach content composition; examine the extent of connectivity …

Linking Biotic Activity To Ecosystem Functioning, Jeanette Sanders Jan 2008

Linking Biotic Activity To Ecosystem Functioning, Jeanette Sanders

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The central theme of this thesis was the search for ecologically meaningful ways to quantify the relationships between the biota and ecosystem processes. This thesis investigated whether a "functional group" approach, that characterised the fauna according to similarities in their activities, could be successfully employed to quantifiably link species' performance to important ecosystem processes. Initially the abilities of traditional "trophic" and "bioturbatory" categories to characterise the estuarine macrobenthic fauna and discriminate between estuarine sites were examined. This thesis determined that the perceived inter-site similarity within an estuary varied according to the function being investigated and that the apparent associations between …

Pilot Study For An Assessment Of Vegetation Structure For Steppe Rangelands Of Central Anatolia, Hüseyi̇n Kansur Firincioğlu, Bi̇lal Şahi̇n, Steven Seefeldt, Fehmi̇ Mert, Basri̇ Hakan Hakyemez, Meci̇t Vural

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In the last 50 years, rangelands in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey have been converted to cropping lands, which has negatively accelerated vegetation change, resulting in overgrazing and poor condition and productivity. In these steppe rangelands, to develop a rational basis for making restoration and management decisions, the vegetation structure must be well understood. Thus, the objectives of this study were to: (1) define vegetation patterns through assessing spatial distribution of the plant species and groups, (2) evaluate the relationships between vegetation and environmental aspects and range condition, and (3) outline possible restoration implementations. Therefore, a study was carried …

Comparing Neural Networks, Linear And Nonlinear Regression Techniques To Model Penetration Resistance, Hossein Bayat, Mohammad Reza Neyshaburi, Mohammad Ali Hajabbasi, Ali Akbar Mahboubi, Mohammad Reza Mosaddeghi

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Penetration resistance (PR) is an important property of soils, and can be expressed as cone index (CI). Because of high variability, there are no accurate and representative PR data in most cases. Variable PR is considerably affected by gravimetric soil water content (GWC) and bulk density (BD). In this study, artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to simulate relationship between BD, GWC, and CI. A data set of 381 samples was collected from 2 study sites, Hamadan and Maragheh. Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) were developed using ANNs and linear and nonlinear regression models to predict CI for the combined data set …

“Primitivism” And Theosophy In Paul Gauguin’S La Orana Maria, Katherine C. Scalia Jan 2008

“Primitivism” And Theosophy In Paul Gauguin’S La Orana Maria, Katherine C. Scalia

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal Paul Gauguin’s expression of his theosophical beliefs in his 1891 painting la Orana Maria. Through extensive research into Gauguin’s system of beliefs on art and religion I intend to demonstrate the likelihood that the tenets of Theosophy would have appealed to his spiritual and aesthetic sensibilities. Gauguin’s involvement in the Symbolist movement, his mystical inclinations, the desire to understand and attain enlightenment, his knowledge of, and respect for religions of the East, and his fascination with the “primitive” are all addressed as pathways that led him to express his theosophical beliefs in …

A Traditionalist Case For Gay Marriage, Dale Carpenter

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This article presents an argument for same-sex marriage within traditionalism or Burkeanism school of conservatism. The author begins by describing briefly Burkean conservatism. Second, he sketches, based on that description, a case against the recognition of gay marriages. Third, the author outlines an affirmative argument for same-sex marriage. Fourth, he reconsiders, in the light of those arguments, the Burkean case against same-sex marriage. Finally, he discusses what a Burkean conservative ought to say about the pace and the process for achieving same-sex marriage.

Could And Should America Have Made An Ottoman Republic In 1919?, Paul D. Carrington Jan 2008

Could And Should America Have Made An Ottoman Republic In 1919?, Paul D. Carrington

Faculty Scholarship

Numerous Americans, perhaps especially American lawyers, have since the 1780s presumed to tell other peoples how to govern themselves. In 2006, that persistent impulse was once again echoed in an address to the American Bar Association by a Justice of the Supreme Court. The purpose of this essay is to question the wisdom of this evangelical ambition, especially when the form of instruction includes military force. It is draws on Spreading America's Word (2005) and directs attention to the hopes of American Protestant Zionists to make a democratic republic in Ottoman Palestine. It suggests that chances were better in 1919 …

Unratified Treaties, Domestic Politics, And The U.S. Constitution, Curtis A. Bradley Jan 2008

Unratified Treaties, Domestic Politics, And The U.S. Constitution, Curtis A. Bradley

Faculty Scholarship

Under contemporary treaty practice, a nation's signature of a treaty typically does not make the nation a party to the treaty. Rather, nations become parties to treaties through an act of ratification or accession, which sometimes occurs long after signature. Nevertheless, Article 18 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which many commentators regard as reflecting customary international law, provides that when a nation signs a treaty it is obligated to refrain from actions that would defeat the “object and purpose” of the treaty until such time as it makes clear its intent not to become a party …

Climate Change Policy, And Policy Change In China, Jonathan B. Wiener Jan 2008

Climate Change Policy, And Policy Change In China, Jonathan B. Wiener

Faculty Scholarship

Solving the climate change problem by limiting global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will necessitate action by the world’s two largest emitters, the United States and China. Neither has so far committed to quantitative emissions limits. Some argue that China cannot be engaged on the basis of its national interest in climate policy, on the ground that China’s national net benefits of limiting greenhouse gas emissions would be negative, as a result of significant GHG abatement costs and potential net gains to China from a warmer world. This premise has led some observers to advocate other approaches to engaging China, such …

Radiative Forcing: Climate Policy To Break The Logjam In Environmental Law, Jonathan B. Wiener Jan 2008

Radiative Forcing: Climate Policy To Break The Logjam In Environmental Law, Jonathan B. Wiener

Faculty Scholarship

This article recommends the key design elements of US climate law. Much past environmental law has suffered from four design problems: fragmentation, insensitivity to tradeoffs, rigid prescriptive commands, and mismatched scale. These are problems with the design of regulatory systems, not a rejection of the overall objective of environmental law to protect ecosystems and human health. These four design defects raised the costs, reduced the benefits, and increased the countervailing risks of many past environmental laws. The principal environmental laws successfully enacted since the 1990s, such as the acid rain trading program in the 1990 Clean Air Act (CAA) Amendments …

Fixing Innovation Policy: A Structural Perspective, Stuart M. Benjamin, Arti K. Rai Jan 2008

Fixing Innovation Policy: A Structural Perspective, Stuart M. Benjamin, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

Innovation is central to economic growth and human welfare. Government officials and commentators have recognized this reality and have called for a variety of different substantive incentives for stimulating innovation. But the question of how an innovation regulator should be structured has received little attention. Such consideration is important not only because of the significance of innovation but also because current government innovation policy is so haphazard. There is no government entity that looks at innovation broadly, and the narrower agencies that regulate aspects of innovation policy not only fail to pay systematic attention to innovation goals but often act …
