Review Of The Toxicology Of Chlorpyrifos With An Emphasis On Human Exposure And Neurodevelopment, Robert B. Daroff
Review Of The Toxicology Of Chlorpyrifos With An Emphasis On Human Exposure And Neurodevelopment, Robert B. Daroff
Faculty Scholarship
This review examines the large body of toxicological and epidemiological information on human exposures to chlorpyrifos, with an emphasis on the controversial potential for chlorpyrifos to induce neurodevelopmental effects at low doses. The results of this review demonstrate that the use of urinary 3,5,6-trichlorpyridinol (TCPy), a metabolite of chlorpyrifos as a biomarker of nonoccupational exposure is problematic and may overestimate nonoccupational exposures to chlorpyrifos by 10-to 20-fold because of the widespread presence of both TCPy and chlorpyrifos-methyl in the food supply. Current "background" (nonoccupational) levels of exposure to chlorpyrifos are several orders of magnitude lower than those required to inhibit …

Membangun Bangsa Yang Sehat Produktif, Does Sampoerno
Membangun Bangsa Yang Sehat Produktif, Does Sampoerno
Kesmas
Farm Gate Nutrient Balances In South West Western Australia – An Overview, Rebecca Ovens, David Weaver, Nardia Keipert, Simon Neville, Robert Summers, Martin Clarke
Farm Gate Nutrient Balances In South West Western Australia – An Overview, Rebecca Ovens, David Weaver, Nardia Keipert, Simon Neville, Robert Summers, Martin Clarke
Conference papers and presentations
Farm-gate nutrient budgets can be used to identify the efficiency of nutrient use within and between individual enterprises and catchments, and may be used to represent a component of the risk that particular landuses represent to water quality. Over the past 5 years, more than 400 farm-gate nutrient balance audits have been conducted across a range of catchments and landuses in southwest Western Australia (WA). Values for nutrient use efficiency and surpluses across landuses and catchments are reported. Patterns of nitrogen and phosphorus signatures closely reflect one another across landuses, though nitrogen input, output and surplus values are consistently higher …

Physical Fitness And Weight Loss After Surgery For Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case Study, Wendell Wilmoth
Physical Fitness And Weight Loss After Surgery For Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case Study, Wendell Wilmoth
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Objective: While there has been a great deal of research on obstructive sleep apnea and its association with obesity, there is little documentation in the primary literature concerning weight loss and improved physical fitness after medical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. This study will document the effects of a reduced calorie diet combined with aerobic conditioning and strength training on a subject who has been treated surgically for obstructive sleep apnea. Methods: The subject participated in a 12-week structured fitness and nutritional program for weight reduction. Pre-program baseline measurements including weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat composition, and waist …

Purpose: To determine the risk factors contributing to and etiologies of gastrointestinal bleeding in an elderly patient population seen by Southwest Gastroenterology (SWGA) providers. Methods: This study reviews charts of patients with GI bleeding from documented sources between 1/1999 and 3/2006. The cases are gathered retrospectively from the clinical records of SWGA, a 12-person private, single specialty gastroenterology group serving community hospitals. Etiology and risk factors for GI hemorrhages are recorded in an elderly population, defined as patients age 55 and older. Results: GI hemorrhages are identified in 105 patients. The majority (83, 79%) of hemorrhages are upper GI bleeds …
Body Composition Changes Among Medical Students Following Matriculation, Kristen Livingstone, Simon Livingstone, Robert Glew, Dorothy Vanderjagt
Body Composition Changes Among Medical Students Following Matriculation, Kristen Livingstone, Simon Livingstone, Robert Glew, Dorothy Vanderjagt
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Purpose: Participation in medical education has been associated with an increased propensity for poor health in other studies. Information regarding the body composition and physical activity patterns of medical students and how they are affected by the rigors of medical school is lacking in the current literature. We sought to assess changes in body composition and physical activity levels of medical students during the first three years of the curriculum. Methods: Using anthropometric measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis and a validated physical activity questionnaire, we measured 44 medical students upon matriculation, at the end of the preclinical curriculum (16 months after …

Program Approach For Childheaded Households In Zambia, Samson Chama
Program Approach For Childheaded Households In Zambia, Samson Chama
Theses and Dissertations
Using an emergent design, this study developed a program approach for young people in the child headed households of Zambia. Phase I dealt with prior ethnography, Phase II focused on independent living services, and Phase III concerned translation to Zambia. A total of 36 participants from Richmond, consisting of 20 Richmond Department of Social Services workers and youth and 16 Africans, were recruited. Three major themes emerged: feasibility, content, and quality. Lessons learned about translational research highlight the need for uniformity in a cultural screen’s composition. This might enhance the richness of perspectives on young people. Lessons for the Department …

Embodying The Therapeutic Alliance : An Exploration Of The Working Alliance In The Personal Trainer-Client Relationship, Lindsay L. Davison
Embodying The Therapeutic Alliance : An Exploration Of The Working Alliance In The Personal Trainer-Client Relationship, Lindsay L. Davison
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This quasi-experimental study examines, from the standpoint of the personal trainer, the extent to which the working alliance and its component parts of goal, task and bond as defined within Bordin's (1975, 1979) theoretical framework, are experienced in the working relationship between personal trainer and client. Additionally, the study explores whether a personal trainer's or a client's ethnicity or gender, a trainer's age or training history, the frequency of the personal training sessions, or the length of the training relationship impact the working alliance total or its subscale scores. An anonymous online survey was distributed by email to several hundred …

The Leaf Ionome As A Multivariable System To Detect A Plant's Physiological Status, Ivan R. Baxter, Olga Vitek, Brett Lahner, Balasubramaniam Muthukumar, Monica Borghi, Joe Morrissey, Mary Lou Guerinot, David E. Salt
Dartmouth Scholarship
The contention that quantitative profiles of biomolecules contain information about the physiological state of the organism has motivated a variety of high-throughput molecular profiling experiments. However, unbiased discovery and validation of biomolecular signatures from these experiments remains a challenge. Here we show that the Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis) leaf ionome, or elemental composition, contains such signatures, and we establish statistical models that connect these multivariable signatures to defined physiological responses, such as iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) homeostasis. Iron is essential for plant growth and development, but potentially toxic at elevated levels. Because of this, shoot Fe concentrations are …
Impacts Of Root Invigoration And Its Individual Components On The Performance Of Red Maple (Acer Rubrum), Kelby Fite
Impacts Of Root Invigoration And Its Individual Components On The Performance Of Red Maple (Acer Rubrum), Kelby Fite
All Dissertations
The Root Invigoration process involves soil decompaction with an air tool, amendment with organic matter and prescription fertilizer, and mulching. In the current study, we measured soil chemical and physical properties, tree characteristics, and root system responses to this process and its individual components. Treatments included Root Invigoration (AFM), mulch only (M), fertilization only (F), Airspade® tillage only (A), and an untreated control (C). The experiment was conducted from 2005-2007 at four urban sites: Anderson, SC; Boston, MA; Myrtle Beach, SC and Pittsburgh, PA. Soil strength was initially reduced by Airspade®, mulch and AFM; however only AFM-treated soils sustained this …
The Effects Of Circular And Linear Exercise On Articular Cartilage In Sheep, Kristine Vernon
The Effects Of Circular And Linear Exercise On Articular Cartilage In Sheep, Kristine Vernon
All Dissertations
Excessive exercise may induce osteoarthritis (OA), or degeneration, of articular cartilage, which is a leading cause of lameness and decreased use in horses. The purposes of this study were to utilize a sheep model to determine the effects of circular and linear exercise on the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of articular cartilage in the metacarpal-phalangeal (MCP) joint and to evaluate biochemical changes in serum and synovial fluid compared to non-exercised control lambs.
Twenty lambs were randomly assigned to three groups: circular exercise (C, 8.5m diameter; n = 8), straight-line exercise (S, treadmill; n = 8) and non-exercised control (CON, n …

Health And Nutritional Need Assessment Of Hispanics In South Carolina, America Chavez-Martinez
All Dissertations
From 1990 to 2000, South Carolina's Hispanic population increased 211%. Now, states such as South Carolina have the fastest growing Hispanic population in the U.S. Hispanics have a high incidence of obesity and related chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, hypertension and heart disease, these diseases could be avoided through diet. Meanwhile, nutrition education interventions help to reduce weight and to change behaviors, leading to better health. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods to examine Hispanics health and nutritional needs to develop a cultural compatible nutrition program for this audience. The qualitative methods explored predisposing, enabling and reinforcing factors …

Characterization Of Reproductive Cyclicity Of Sex Steroids By Fecal Analysis In Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Beate Litz
Marine Biology
"Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) have experienced a drastic population decline in the past several decades. Among hypotheses for the decline and failure of the population to recover is decreased reproductive success. Harsh environmental conditions within the species range and the large body size of the animals can limit sampling efforts to investigate these hypotheses. Three captive Steller sea lions were used as models to validate the use of fecal steroid analysis for this species. Their annual endocrine fluctuations were monitored over four years to gain a better understanding of their reproductive endocrinology and overcome sampling challenges typically associated with …

Kids Count Alaska 2006/2007, Virgene Hanna, Irma Schreiner, Patricia Deroche, Claudia Lampman
ISER Reports
About This Year’s Book Every year the Kids Count Alaska data book reports on how the children of Alaska are doing. But we also like to tell readers a bit more about life in Alaska, to help them understand the place Alaska’s children call home. This year, we’re celebrating the wildlife that is so much a part of life in Alaska. Alaskans watch, hunt, photograph, and coexist with hundreds of large and small species of animals and birds. That coexistence is not always easy for either the wildlife or the people, but it is always interesting. An increasing number of …
