Fibromyalgia: An Exploration Of Herbs For Treatment, Earnestine Bufford
Fibromyalgia: An Exploration Of Herbs For Treatment, Earnestine Bufford
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition engulfed by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and depression... Meanwhile, there are no successful medications to treat the condition without adverse reaction or side effects. Action research investigates herbs as a remedy for treating fibromyalgia. An exploration of its effectiveness will be evaluated, and whether or not it causes adverse reactions and side effects. In addition, the project will address herbs interaction with pharmaceutical drugs and other herbs. It is hypothesized that herbs are better and more effective than drugs. The results will show that there are many effective herbs that can be used to …

Tending To Richmond's Children: Community Strategies To Bridge Service Gaps, Judith D. Moore, Jessamyn Taylor
Tending To Richmond's Children: Community Strategies To Bridge Service Gaps, Judith D. Moore, Jessamyn Taylor
National Health Policy Forum
The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to Richmond, Virginia, in October 2008 to explore social and environmental determinants of children’s health, including the impacts that poverty and exposure to lead-based paint have on birth outcomes, child development, and school readiness; and the community's efforts to address them. Though not large in population terms, Richmond faces many of the social and economic problems often common in larger urban areas—concentrated poverty, migration of wealth and services to the surrounding counties, a high infant mortality rate, and troubled schools. The site visit explored community strategies to improve birth outcomes and …

Supplementing Cattle On Pasture: When, What And How Much?, Roy Burris
Supplementing Cattle On Pasture: When, What And How Much?, Roy Burris
Kentucky Grazing Conference
The biggest advantage of maintaining cattle in the southeast is our ability to grow forages. It is generally an economic advantage to make maximum use of our forage and then supplement only when needed to meet our production goals. Judicious use of extra nutrition to grazing cattle can allow us to meet an objective which was best stated by Hoveland in 1986:
“Our objective is to maintain pasture at the highest quality that the environment will allow and efficiently convert as much of the pasture as possible into saleable animal product.”
Growth Of Grasses And Legumes: Impact On Grazing, S. Ray Smith
Growth Of Grasses And Legumes: Impact On Grazing, S. Ray Smith
Kentucky Grazing Conference
The primary, cool season, perennial pasture grasses used in Kentucky are orchardgrass, bluegrass, and tall fescue. When not grazed or harvested, each of these passes through successive stages of growth in the spring: 1) leafy vegetative; 2) boot with seed heads enclosed in leaf sheath; 3) heading when the seed heads begin to show and, 4) bloom when pollination has occurred ( Figure 2). Since fiber and lignin contents increase steadily beyond the vegetative stage, while percent protein and digestibility decrease, a major goal in grazing management is to maintain these grasses in the leafy, vegetative stage at all times. …

Cultural Factors And Concepts Of Pollution: Colorectal Cancer And Health Behaviors Among Ashkenazi Jewish Women, Karen Besterman-Dahan
Cultural Factors And Concepts Of Pollution: Colorectal Cancer And Health Behaviors Among Ashkenazi Jewish Women, Karen Besterman-Dahan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence in Ashkenazi Jews has been found to be highest of any ethnic group in the world (Feldman, 2001). It is currently unclear how culture and religion influence health behaviors of U.S. Ashkenazi Jews, as well as what other socio-cultural factors influence AJ women's attitudes towards CRC risk and screening practices. This study aimed at exploring and describing the cultural and religious influences on health behaviors and beliefs related to CRC in Ashkenazi Jewish women. Research participants included seven key informants (rabbis) and forty-two Ashkenazi Jewish women ages 50 and up. Methods included in-depth, qualitative interviews …

The Anchor, Volume 122.07: October 22, 2008, Hope College
The Anchor: 2008
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Determining The Usefulness Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Enzyme Assays As Proxies For Rockfish Ecological Data., Erica M. Hudson
Determining The Usefulness Of Aerobic And Anaerobic Enzyme Assays As Proxies For Rockfish Ecological Data., Erica M. Hudson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Rockfish are commercially and recreationally important, yet due to the in habitat depths at which rockfish inhabit, little is known about their ecology. As a consequence, management of rockfish population as a fishery resource is a work in progress. In particular, changes in physiological condition aver the course of the year is poorly described. This study examined 19 different species of Sebastes from the Southern California Bight over four seasons (late summer, fall, winter, and spring) using metabolic enzyme assays. Enzymes used were lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), pyruvate kinase (PK), and citrate synthase (CS). Some muscle composition data …

Faculty Publications
Background: End-stage renal disease rates rose following widespread introduction of high fructose corn syrup in the American diet, supporting speculation that fructose harms the kidney. Sugar-sweetened soda is a primary source of fructose. We therefore hypothesized that sugary soda consumption was associated with albuminuria, a sensitive marker for kidney disease. Methodology/Principal Findings: Design was a cross-sectional analysis. Data were drawn from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2004. The setting was a representative United States population sample. Participants included adults 20 years and older with no history of diabetes mellitus (n = 12,601); after exclusions for missing outcome …
