Lifestyle Of Shellmound Builders In Brazil (Galley Proofs), Sabine Eggers, C. C. Petronilho, K. Brandt, J. Filippini, Karl J. Reinhard
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The contact of inland and coastal prehistoric groups in Brazil is believed to have been restricted to regions with no geographical barrier, as is the case in the Ribeira de Iguape valley. The inland osteological collection from the riverine shellmound Moraes (5800–4500 BP) represents a unique opportunity to test this assumption for this region. Despite cultural similarities between riverine and coastal shellmounds, important ecological and site distribution differences are expected to impact on lifestyle. The purpose of this study is thus to document and interpret health and lifestyle indicators in Moraes in comparison to coastal shellmound groups. Specifically we test …

This document presents a review of the literature addressing education, healthcare, healthcare delivery and finance in Pakistan and the oral health status of the Pakistani people. Considering the enormous unmet oral health needs, the insufficient supply of dental professionals and the current unstructured dental hygiene curriculum in Pakistan, this document offers a mission, vision, and goals for the new dental hygiene theoretical framework for Pakistan. Moreover, it offers recommendations for competency-based dental hygiene education and practice, professional licensing, a practice act, and a dental hygiene scope of practice to help protect the welfare of the Pakistani public, i.e., increasing the …
Effect Of Different Germination Processes On Belowground And Aboveground Productivity In Mature Coffea Arabica, November 2008, Emily Giles
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
This was the first study in Monteverde, Costa Rica to look at how the agricultural method used during the germination phase affects the productivity of a mature Coffea arabica. It was thought by local farmers that a plant germinated in the ground and then transplanted would have more fine root biomass than a plant that is germinated in a polybag and then transplanted. Traditional farming practices have shown that when coffee is transplanted from the ground to another location; the main root is often cut, yielding more secondary fine roots. In contrast, many experiments have found that polybags increase a …
Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure were amended effective December 1, 2006 to address concerns about discovery of electronically stored information. One of those amendments, Rule 37(e), created a safe harbor for parties who destroy relevant information as a result of the good faith, routine operation of their electronic storage systems. The rule recognizes the enhanced difficulty of preserving relevant information in the electronic context due to the automatic operation of electronic storage systems and the necessary deletion and modification of such systems' contents from time to time due to storage constraints and other technological limitations. The rule's good-faith requirement …

Predictors Of Emesis And Time To Goal Intake After Pyloromyotomy: Analysis From A Prospective Trial., Shawn D. St Peter, Kuojen Tsao, Susan W. Sharp, G W. Holcomb Iii, Daniel J. Ostlie
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Background: Emesis after pyloromyotomy for pyloric stenosis is a common clinical phenomenon and the limiting factor in time to goal feeds. The amount of emesis that can be expected after myotomy is unknown. No data have been published that equip caregivers with the ability to understand which patients are more likely to have emesis and take longer to advance to goal feeds after pyloromyotomy. Therefore, we performed analysis of prospective data obtained from a randomized trial to determine if outcome can be predicted from preoperative or intraoperative variables.
Methods: The dataset was prospectively collected from a randomized trial comparing open …

Does Repeated Burial Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue (Ovis Aries) In Soil Affect Subsequent Decomposition?, David O. Carter, Mark Tibbett
Does Repeated Burial Of Skeletal Muscle Tissue (Ovis Aries) In Soil Affect Subsequent Decomposition?, David O. Carter, Mark Tibbett
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The repeated introduction of an organic resource to soil can result in its enhanced degradation. This phenomenon is of primary importance in agroecosystems, where the dynamics of repeated nutrient, pesticide, and herbicide amendment must be understood to achieve optimal yield. Although not yet investigated, the repeated introduction of cadaveric material is an important area of research in forensic science and cemetery planning. It is not currently understood what effects the repeated burial of cadaveric material has on cadaver decomposition or soil processes such as carbon mineralization. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a laboratory experiment using ovine ( …

A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Bat hemoparasite studies have focused on bats as vectors for viruses that cause human diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Henipavirus, while ectoparastite studies have looked at a broad range of ecological and abiotic factors that influence ectoparasite prevalence including age, sex, roosting ecology, and habitat. Yet diet had been largely ignored in both hemoparasite and ectoparasite studies. In this study, I looked at diet as a possible factor in hemoparasite load and also looked at the relationships between hemoparasites, health (with weight as a proxy), and ectoparasites. Four guilds were compared, sanguinivores, omnivores, frugivores, and nectarivores, with an overall …

Spontaneous Bilateral Chylothorax With Fatal Outcome In A Patient With Melorheostosis, Michele Leuenberger, Jan Braunwalder, Ralph A. Schmid, Zeno Stanga
Saudi Medical Journal
We report a case of progressive, multifocal melorheostosis in a 28-year-old woman, with involvement of the left arm, chest, spine, and impressive soft tissue involvement. In the past, she had undergone multiple vascular interventions. She presented with spontaneous massive bilateral chylothorax. After conservative treatment without success, we conducted bilateral pleurodesis. This resulted in a clear reduction of pleural effusions, but her medical condition subsequently worsened due to progressive parenchymatous infiltrates, and increased interlobal pleural effusions. She ultimately died of global respiratory insufficiency. In patients with melorheostosis, involvement of the soft tissue can result in distinctive morbidity, and whenever possible, treatment …

Agriculture And Ecosystem Services: Strategies For State And Local Governments, J.B. Ruhl
Agriculture And Ecosystem Services: Strategies For State And Local Governments, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Agriculture has long been the Rubik's Cube of environmental policy. Although agriculture is a leading cause of pollution and other environmental harms, it has been resistant to regulation and remarkably successful at requiring payment to do the right thing. This article focuses on hints of movement in a new direction for agriculture, arising out of a merger between the age-old practice of paying farmers to do what is right, the fear of losing agricultural lands to suburban development, the rising fiscal burdens to state and local jurisdictions presented by new suburban development, and the new understanding that farms may hold …

Healthy People 2010 breastfeeding goals include 50% exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months. In California, US, Santa Clara County Women, Infants, and Children (SCCWIC) data indicated Asian participants had low (5.6%) 6-month breastfeeding rates. To examine infant-feeding practices, Vietnamese breastfeeding peer counselors surveyed 133 Vietnamese SCCWIC participants (≥ 18 years old, nonpregnant, < 28 months postpartum) using a structured questionnaire regarding intentions, attitudes, and subjective norms toward breastfeeding. Results indicated that 75% initiated breastfeeding in the hospital (33% exclusively, 42% partially), and 25% exclusively formula fed. At survey time, 49% had terminated breastfeeding (average duration 4.4 months). Feeding intentions during pregnancy predicted feeding method used (P < .001). Most prenatal advice was from SCCWIC employees, friends, and doctors who supported breastfeeding. Most postnatal advice was from nurses who supported breastfeeding and bottle-feeding equally. Stronger control beliefs, peer counseling, and education were correlated with breastfeeding (P < .001). Improved postdelivery hospital advice may further increase breastfeeding initiation and duration.

Women’S Health Challenges In A Low-Income Philippine Urban Neighborhood, Fiscalina Amadora-Nolasco
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study privileges women’s views of health to determine the categories and beliefs through which they create meanings in their lives, particularly in assessing the influence of health problems on their well-being, and whether they have implicit ideas of how it might be possible for them to live a healthy life. To determine what constitutes the domain of women’s health problems and how they view these given the limitations of socioeconomic, political and environmental conditions of the community in which they live, interviews were conducted with 40 mothers in Paradise Island, Barangay Looc, Mandaue City, Philippines, between 2002-2004 as part …
