A Simple Index Of Smoking, Abhaya Indrayan Dr., Rajeev Kumar Mr., Shridhar Dwivedi Dr. Nov 2008

A Simple Index Of Smoking, Abhaya Indrayan Dr., Rajeev Kumar Mr., Shridhar Dwivedi Dr.

COBRA Preprint Series

Background: Cigarette smoking is implicated in a large number of diseases and other adverse health conditions. Among the dimensions of smoking are number of cigarettes smoked per day, duration of smoking, passive smoking, smoking of filter cigarettes, age at start, and duration elapsed since quitting by ex-smokers. The practice so far is to study most of these separately. We develop a simple index that integrates these dimensions of smoking into a single metric, and suggest that this index be developed further. Method: The index is developed under a series of natural assumptions. Broadly, these are (i) the burden of smoking …

Health And Behavioral Problems Associated With Symptoms Of Pediatric Sleep Disorders, Rachel B. French Nov 2008

Health And Behavioral Problems Associated With Symptoms Of Pediatric Sleep Disorders, Rachel B. French

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine prevalence rates of symptoms of several sleep disorders in young children, and the relationship between symptoms of pediatric sleep disorders and other childhood problems. Two-hundred-seventy-six children aged 2 to 5 years were studied through examination of a pre-existing database. Children rated as high risk for having a sleep disorder displayed significantly more aggressive behavior and attention problems, as compared to children whose sleep was rated in the normal range. However, no relationship was found between symptoms of sleep disorders and body mass index, asthma, or allergies. In addition, no relationship was found …

Simple Rules That May Help Ranchers Select Replacement Heifers For Increased Pregnancy Rates And Reduce Dystocia, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson Nov 2008

Simple Rules That May Help Ranchers Select Replacement Heifers For Increased Pregnancy Rates And Reduce Dystocia, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Every year livestock producers replace cows they cull from their herds with young animals often selected from progeny of the cows they currently own. Since replacement rates for beef cattle in Nebraska tend to average between 16 to 20 percent annually, this is not a trivial undertaking. Much of the talk among producers tends to concentrate on muscling and other physically observable characteristics, and the genetic composition of animals to be selected as replacements. These criteria are important, but what must also be considered is the ability of the selected replacement animals to perform reproductively. Producers expect cost to be …

Isolation Of Methyl Laurate From Coconut Oil As Raw Material For Fatty Alcohol Sulfate, Rita Arbianti, Tania Surya Utami, Astri Nugroho

Makara Journal of Technology

Isolation of Methyl Laurate from Coconut Oil as Raw Material for Fatty Alcohol Sulfate. Methyl laurate is a raw or base material for many industries, including surfactant industries. In this research, coconut oil (VCO) is transesterified with methanol to produce methyl ester, using NaOH as the catalyst. Methyl laurate is then separated by method based on the difference in melting point. This research focuses at determining the effects of some variables in transesterification on the concentration of produced methyl laurate. The variables are temperature (40 oC, 50 oC, 60 oC, 80 oC), time of transesterification reaction (0,5 hour, 1 hour, …

Impact Of Changes In The Microclimatic Conditions On Species Diversity Of Insectivorous Plants At Karungalagudi, (Tn) India, S. Ramya Et Al. Nov 2008

Impact Of Changes In The Microclimatic Conditions On Species Diversity Of Insectivorous Plants At Karungalagudi, (Tn) India, S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

A study on the interrelationship between the factors influencing vegetation change and composition of insectivorous plant community was carried out at Karungalagudi, India. Anthropogenic intervention at this site due to industrial development, agro-industrial pollution, mining, quarrying has accelerated the pace by which the microclimatic and environmental conditions have shown ever-changing temporal and special variation. This has resulted in alteration in community composition of insectivorous plants at this consortium. Anthropogenic activities along with changes in ecological process have altered the microclimatic conditions conducive for the sustenance of the tiny plant association among the members of insectivorous (Droseraceae, Lentibulariaceae), non insectivorous (Eriocaulaceae, …
