Citizen Science: A Best Practices Manual And How It Can Be Applied, Susan Sachs, Paul E. Super, Michelle Prysby Jan 2008

Citizen Science: A Best Practices Manual And How It Can Be Applied, Susan Sachs, Paul E. Super, Michelle Prysby

United States National Park Service: Publications

These examples are all forms of “citizen science” happening at environmental education centers, National Park research learning centers, nature centers, and other non-formal education institutions. Citizen science is a research and education tool that involves everyday people in real and meaningful forms of science, including biological inventory, long-term monitoring, and investigative research. All of these examples demonstrate ways that these institutions are using citizen science as a tool for furthering their missions of educating the public about the environment, teaching people about the process of science, and connecting people to the natural world. They also demonstrate ways that citizens are …

Reproduction And Immune Homeostasis In A Long-Lived Seabird, The Nazca Booby (Sula Granti), Victor Apanius, Mark A. Westbrock, David J. Anderson Jan 2008

Reproduction And Immune Homeostasis In A Long-Lived Seabird, The Nazca Booby (Sula Granti), Victor Apanius, Mark A. Westbrock, David J. Anderson

Ornithological Monographs

The evolution of longevity requires that the marginal investment in selfmaintenance at the expense of reproductive effort is favored by realizing a longer reproductive lifespan. This can occur when extrinsic mortality factors (weather, predators, etc.) are less important than intrinsic mortality factors, such as the physiological cost of reproduction. Long-lived pelagic seabirds have low annual reproductive output and prolonged offspring growth periods that are thought to have evolved to accommodate marine resource variability. The life-history theory of senescence predicts that these same taxa should minimize per diem reproductive costs and shift effects of resource variability to the offspring. To address …

Assessment Of Salat Taraweeh And Fasting Effect On Body Composition, M.S. Mohktar, F. Ibrahim Jan 2008

Assessment Of Salat Taraweeh And Fasting Effect On Body Composition, M.S. Mohktar, F. Ibrahim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper presents the changes in the body composition on 18 male Muslim subjects during salat taraweeh and fasting in the month of Ramadhan. Body composition is measured by using single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The measurement is performed on 30 Sya'aban (baseline measurement) and 19th of Ramadhan (final measurement). The body composition results showed that after 20 days of fasting and taraweeh, the mean value of phase angle (PA), basal metabolic rate (BMR), lean body mass (LBM), and the ratio of total body water to total weight (TBW/TW) increased significantly (p<0.05) meanwhile, the resistance, fat mass (FM) and glucose values decreased significantly (p<0.05). These changes indicate that salat taraweeh dan fasting give a good improvement to the body composition and overall health. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

Fostering A Healthy Body Image: Prevention And Intervention With Adolescent Eating Disorders, Michelle Giles, Michael Hass Jan 2008

Fostering A Healthy Body Image: Prevention And Intervention With Adolescent Eating Disorders, Michelle Giles, Michael Hass

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Eating disorders are among the most frequently seen chronic illnesses found in adolescent females. In this paper, we discuss school-based prevention and intervention efforts that seek to reduce the impact of this serious illness. School counselors play a key role in the prevention of eating disorders and can provide support even when not directly involved in psychological or medical treatment. Because of their ability to play a leadership role in school-based prevention of eating disorders, school counselors are essential in facilitating a collaborative approach to the prevention of and intervention in eating disorders and their associated risk factors.

Chapter 2: Use Of Distillers Co-Products In Diets Fed To Beef Cattle, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer Jan 2008

Chapter 2: Use Of Distillers Co-Products In Diets Fed To Beef Cattle, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Consumers in the United States purchase 64 pounds of beef per year. That beef is considered “high quality” by international standards. In the distant past in the United States, beef was produced with forages, and it still is in most countries of the world today. Beef cattle are ruminants and therefore are able to convert grasses, hays, and crop residues into tasty, nutritious meat. Even today in the United States, about 80% to 90% of the feed required to produce “grain-fed” beef is forage. The U.S. beef produced today is “high quality” because the cattle are fed corn just prior …

Cattle Code: Coproduct Optimizer Decision Evaluator, Crystal D. Buckner, Darrell Mark, Virgil R. Bremer, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Expansion of the corn-based ethanol industry in recent years has resulted in a growing supply of coproduct feeds. These coproducts result in significant improvements in cattle performance and are often priced lower than corn on a dry matter basis. Along with these benefits to feeding ethanol coproduct feeds, cattle feeders must also account for additional transportation costs to originate the coproducts and for added expenses to handle, mix, and deliver the feed ration within the feedlot. An economic budget model, called Cattle CODE, was created to help feeders, nutritionists, and Extension educators evaluate these nonlinear effects across unique feeding situations.

Board-Invited Review: Use Of Distillers By-Products In The Beef Cattle Feeding Industry, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer Jan 2008

Board-Invited Review: Use Of Distillers By-Products In The Beef Cattle Feeding Industry, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The ethanol industry is expanding rapidly. This expansion in production of renewable energy also increases production of by-products. These byproducts, primarily distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), are utilized very efficiently by ruminants. When the starch in corn is fermented to produce ethanol, the remaining nutrients (protein, fat, fiber) are concentrated about 3-fold. Whereas DGS is an excellent protein source for ruminants, the large supply and the price relative to corn make DGS an attractive energy source as well. This is especially important with reduced availability and higher price of corn because of demand by the ethanol industry. A meta-analysis of …

Ultra Wideband Radio: A Novel Method For Measuring Wandering In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Donna Algase, D. Helen Moore, Sadia Ahmed Jan 2008

Ultra Wideband Radio: A Novel Method For Measuring Wandering In Persons With Dementia, William D. Kearns, Donna Algase, D. Helen Moore, Sadia Ahmed

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

Wandering by persons with dementia is a complex syndrome of locomotive behaviors shaped by environmental, wanderer-specific and caregiver characteristics that vary the risk level for exiting, elopement, getting lost and accidental death. While valid and reliable methods to measure wandering exist, few have been evaluated for measurement of specific geographical patterns of wandering behavior as they occur in space and over time. In this paper we demonstrate how UWB-RFID can be used to unobtrusively and continuously measure two particularly high-risk wandering behaviors over intervals from weeks to months that occur in proximity to care setting exit points: lingering near exit …

Accidental Event Compensation: The Differing Philosophies And Objectives Of The Civilian And Martial Sectors, Michael Murphy

Honors Capstones

As a result of the growing scrutiny of the military in recent times, understanding the philosophy and objectives behind the military sector’s method of disability compensation relative to the civilian sector stands as a relevant topic. There exist many similar types of disability within the civilian and martial sectors, yet the compensation levels can show great variation. This work attempts to understand the reasoning behind the differing levels of benefits by investigating the underlying philosophies and objectives applied in each sector through an extensive review of work from independent organizations such as the GAO and the RAND Corporation. This work …

Body Image: An Addiction, Disease, And Destroyer, Urvita Schukla Jan 2008

Body Image: An Addiction, Disease, And Destroyer, Urvita Schukla

Honors Capstones

For some time now, society has over-emphasized physical beauty. Body image has taken a toll on many people by labeling what is unattractive and what is not. With the help of the mass media, one may critically evaluate his or her own appearance. Perceived imperfections may arise, and the obsession to correct these flaws can uncontrollably grow. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze body image within our culture and media. Beauty has somewhat evolved over the past few decades, and it is hard to attribute the phenomenon to just one aspect of change. Are “ideal” standards instilled in …
