Mutant screens and transcriptome studies led us to consider whether the metabolism of glucose polymers, i.e., maltose, maltodextrin, and glycogen, is important for Escherichia coli colonization of the intestine. By using the streptomycin-treated mouse model, we found that catabolism of the disaccharide maltose provides a competitive advantage in vivo to pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 and commensal E. coli K-12, whereas degradation of exogenous forms of the more complex glucose polymer, maltodextrin, does not. The endogenous glucose polymer, glycogen, appears to play an important role in colonization, since mutants that are unable to synthesize or degrade glycogen have significant colonization defects. …

The carbon sources that support the growth of pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the mammalian intestine have not previously been investigated. In vivo, the pathogenic E. coli EDL933 grows primarily as single cells dispersed within the mucus layer that overlies the mouse cecal epithelium. We therefore compared the pathogenic strain and the commensal E. coli strain MG1655 modes of metabolism in vitro, using a mixture of the sugars known to be present in cecal mucus, and found that the two strains used the 13 sugars in a similar order and cometabolized as many as 9 sugars at a time. We …

Energy And The Future Jan 2008

Energy And The Future

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Debate over energy policy in the United States has reached its pinnacle in recent years. Among the key issues that have pushed energy into the spotlight is concern over foreign oil dependence, competition for scarce resources from growing economies, and a mounting scientific and popular consensus that global climate change is a serious challenge of irreversible proportion.

The planet’s population is increasing, living longer, and in fast developing economies like China and India—getting wealthier—a combination of forces leading to both greater consumption of energy and increased production of greenhouse gases. Finding clean, alternative energy sources has thus become a critical …

Lack Of Assortative Mating For Tail, Body Size, Or Condition In The Elaborate Monomorphic Turquoise-Browed Motmot (Eumomota Superciliosa), Troy G. Murphy Jan 2008

Lack Of Assortative Mating For Tail, Body Size, Or Condition In The Elaborate Monomorphic Turquoise-Browed Motmot (Eumomota Superciliosa), Troy G. Murphy

Biology Faculty Research

Elaborate male and female plumage can be maintained by mutual sexual selection and function as a mate-choice or status signal in both sexes. Both male and female Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) have long tails that terminate in widened blue-and-black rackets that appear to hang, unattached, below the body of the bird. I tested whether mutual sexual selection maintains the Turquoise-browed Motmot’s elaborate tail plumage by testing the prediction that mating occurs in an assortative manner for tail plumage. I also tested whether assortative mating occurs for body size, a potential measure of dominance, and for phenotypic condition, a …

The regions metamorphosis has invigorated communities throughout the area and created a tremendous set of social, economic, and cultural opportunities.

The intent of this quality of life report is two-fold. First, is to provide the people of Northwest Arkansas with an empirically grounded understanding of the …

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study was to examine maternal influences on childhood obesity, specifically the impact of maternal modeling of eating behaviors and sensitivity/control on children's eating behaviors. It was hypothesized that: 1) maternal modeling of eating behaviors would significantly predict children's eating behaviors, 2) the degree of maternal control of children's eating cues would influence child self-regulatory ability,1 and 3) maternal modeling would have a greater relationship to child eating behavior than maternal sensitivity/control.

Participants were 153 mothers with at least one child 6 to 11 years old. Mothers completed a questionnaire ‘ assessing eating behaviors for themselves and …
