Conservation Implications Of Winter-Feeding Policies For Mule Deer In Utah, Chris C. Peterson
Conservation Implications Of Winter-Feeding Policies For Mule Deer In Utah, Chris C. Peterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Policies regulating wildlife winter-feeding programs may have long-term impacts on conservation and future management of both target and non-target species. In 2000, the Utah Wildlife Board, upon reviewing input from a series of public regional meetings, adopted a Utah Big Game Winter-Feeding Policy. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources used this policy to regulate winter-feeding programs for mule deer in northern Utah, 2001-2005. I monitored the program effects on mule deer biology, activity and migration, and winter browse utilization and productivity.
While feed rations generally compensated for protein and energy deficiencies, they may overlook mineral deficiencies. To determine if mule …

A Multi-Scale Test Of The Forage Maturation Hypothesis In A Partially Migratory Ungulate Population, Mark Hebblewhite, Evelyn Merrill, Greg Mcdermid
Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications
The forage maturation hypothesis (FMH) proposes that ungulate migration is driven by selection for high forage quality. Because quality declines with plant maturation, but intake declines at low biomass, ungulates are predicted to select for intermediate forage biomass to maximize energy intake by following phenological gradients during the growing season. We tested the FMH in the Canadian Rocky Mountains by comparing forage availability and selection by both migrant and nonmigratory resident elk (Cervus elaphus) during three growing seasons from 2002-2004. First, we confirmed that the expected trade-off between forage quality and quantity occurred across vegetation communities. Next, we modeled forage …
Public Prekindergarten: An Implementation Model For Public Schools In States That Do Not Fund Prekindergarten, Sharon A. Hansen
Public Prekindergarten: An Implementation Model For Public Schools In States That Do Not Fund Prekindergarten, Sharon A. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this comparative case study was to develop a prekindergarten implementation model for public school districts located in states without state-funded prekindergarten. The two public school districts selected for the study were located in a rural Midwestern state and differed on the presence or absence of a prekindergarten program within their school settings. This study utilized qualitative case study methods to identify (a) factors that supported and impeded voluntary initiation, implementation, and continuation of a prekindergarten within two public school settings; (b) the role of key stakeholders; and (c) the effects resulting from the implementation or lack of …

Circadian Disruptions In Night Nurses, Leah Swenson
Circadian Disruptions In Night Nurses, Leah Swenson
Theses and Dissertations
A lack of knowledge exists in the physical and psychological impact shift work, particularly working during the night shift, causes in nurses. Inadequate rest derived from night shift work seriously affects the frontal cortex's ability to control speech, access memory, and solve problems. It has been well documented that night shift workers sleep less, perform less effectively on psychomotor and cognitive tests, make more errors during night shifts, and are at higher risk for motor vehicle accidents because of post-night shift drowsiness. Planned naps in the workplace may be an effective intervention to some of these adverse circumstances

Adolescent Values And Exercise Behaviors, Kameron C. Dill
Adolescent Values And Exercise Behaviors, Kameron C. Dill
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in adolescent obesity in America (Mayo Clinic, 2006). Given this, there is a corresponding need to develop targeted adolescent obesity interventions. The current study examined how a psychosocially based intervention impacted adolescents' perceived value, frequency, and amount of exercise. Participants included 55 adolescents, (28 male, 26 female) ranging in age from 15-18. Separated by class, the three groups included one control group and two separate intervention groups. All groups completed an Exercise Checklist (Anshel, 2006), measuring the value, :frequency, and amount of exercise prior to any intervention. Classes then received different …

Preferential Oviposition By Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) Butterflies On Passiflora Biflora (Passifloraceae) Leaves With Higher Cyanide Concentrations, May 2008, Phillip Burkholder
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Passiflora spp. produces cyanogenic glycosides to prevent herbivory. The butterfly subfamily Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae) has broken through this defense with the ability to ingest the cyanogenic compounds. A coevolutionary arms race of adaptations and counter-adaptations followed, in which it is believed that Passiflora spp. evolved a series of counter-adaptive defenses, like egg-mimics, leaf shape, and extrafloral nectarines, to specifically combat heliconiines. While sometimes overcoming these adaptations, heliconiines still consider them for oviposition. Additionally, the role of cyanide may also have an effect on oviposition. It has been suggested that while detrimental to larvae, cyanide provides protection that promotes oviposition. There are …
Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly
Health Of The Herd Bull, Russ Daly
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The importance of the herd bull to the reproductive performance and profitability of cow herds that utilize natural service cannot be underestimated. Health problems in a bull may result either in decreased fertility in that bull or, in the worst case, in an infectious disease that could spread to the rest of the breeding herd, with disastrous results for herd fertility. For these reasons, the health of incoming and existing herd bulls is of utmost importance.

In Vitro And In Vivo Techniques For Screening New Natural Product-Based Fungicides For Control Of Strawberry Anthracnose, Maritza Abril
Dissertations
Seven plant pathogenic fungi (Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, C. fragariae, C. gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, Phomopsis obscurans, and P. viticola) valuable in screening fungicide efficacy were tested. Optimal and reproducible conditions for germination of these selected fungi were established by incorporating Roswell Park Memorial Institute 1640 (RPMI) as a medium of known composition and washing conidia to remove innate germination inhibitors. This step reduced average fungal germination times between 3.5 h and 21.2 h. The natural product-based fungicide, sampangine, seven sampangine analogs (4-bromo-sampangine, 4-methoxysampangine, benzo[4,5]sampangine, liriodenine Mel AMC-XIII-103, onychine, cryptolepine, and liriodenine CDH-II-37), plus seven conventional fungicides (benomyl, captan, cyprodinil, fenbuconazole, …

Eating Disorders: A Study Of University Type And Prevalence, Emily C. Riggins
Senior Honors Theses
Disordered eating has become an increasing problem, especially in western culture. A study was conducted to determine a possible relationship between disordered eating among college students and type of university. Previous studies allude to the possibility of private evangelical colleges yielding more eating disorders than private non-evangelical and public colleges. College students at two east coast universities were compared on the Eating Attitudes Test and a demographic questionnaire. The research indicated that prevalence of eating disorders is not significantly different between private evangelical institutions and private non-evangelical institutions. The findings show some background, prevalence, causes, and theoretical explanation of eating …

The most prevalent root diseases of cereals in Western Australia are rhizoctonia bare patch, root lesion nematode and take-all. Less widespread are fusarium crown rot, cereal cyst nematode, common root rot …
Rural Breastfeeding Mothers: Five Reasons For Early Cessation, Amy L. Suda
Rural Breastfeeding Mothers: Five Reasons For Early Cessation, Amy L. Suda
Theses and Dissertations
Breastfeeding remains the most natural, convenient, and recommended source of early feeding for newborns. Unfortunately, more women are having potentially preventable problems in the first few weeks after birth which may lead to early cessation of breastfeeding. In the rural area, quick and accessible resources for questions are often hard to come by, leading to the termination of the breastfeeding relationship. This earlier than expected termination may lead to feelings of disappointment, frustration and sadness by the already overburdened new mother. The goal of this project was to identify five common reasons for discontinuation of breastfeeding in the early weeks …

Theses and Dissertations
Exclusive breastfeeding has been proven to be the best sole source of nutrition for infants until six months of age when supplemental foods may be added. Controversies have arisen regarding the necessity for vitamin D supplementation prior to six months of age in exclusively breastfed infants. There are inconsistent practices and information provided to parents regarding the need to provide vitamin D supplementation to their infants. Therefore, the puqJose of this project was to determine the cmTent evidence for vitamin D supplementation in exclusively breastfed infants in the first six months of life. Current evidence supports supplementing exclusively breastfed infants …

Putative Role Of Palmitate And Akt Signaling In Attenuating Skeletal Muscle Growth In The Obese Zucker Rat, Jonathan Michael Peterson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Obese zucker rat (OZR) is a model of obesity and metabolic syndrome, with a reduced skeletal muscle mass compared with the lean zucker rat (LZR). Growth and hypertrophy of muscle fibers critically depend on activation and differentiation of satellite cells into new myonuclei, as well as the prevention of myonuclear apoptosis. Akt is known to regulate satellite cell activation and differentiation and inhibit apoptotic signaling. Akt activity is also reduced in the OZR compared to the LZR. The present study had two primary purposes; first, to observe, in vitro, the effects of the saturated free fatty acid palmitate on …

The Elder Economic Security Initiative™ Program: The Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index For Pennsylvania, Laura Henze Russell, Ellen A. Bruce
Gerontology Institute Publications
This report will address the question of income adequacy for Pennsylvania’s older adults using the WOW-GI National Elder Economic Security Standard Index (the Index) methodology. The Index will benchmark basic costs of living for elder households. It will illustrate how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households: household size, homeownership or renter, mode of transportation, and health status. The costs are for basic needs of elder households; they are based on market costs and do not assume any subsidies.

Emergence Patterns And Male Polymorphism In The Nonpollinating Fig Wasp Aepocerus Sp. (Torymidae), May 2008, Katelyn Burgess
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
This study was designed to investigate a perceived male dimorphism in the nonpollinating fig wasp Aepocerus sp. (Torymidae), as well as to examine emergence schedules of males and females as well as of different male morphs. I collected 100 Ficus pertusa figs and preserved the wasps that emerged from each fig every day for five days. I counted the number of male and female Aepocerus sp. that emerged from each fig each day, and I measured body size and degree of wing patchiness in males to assess whether the species exhibits male dimorphism. I found that males tend to emerge …

Anti-Herbivore Defense Trade-Offs: A Comparison Of Passiflora Capsularis, Passiflora Helleri, And Passiflora Sexflora (Passifloraceae), May 2008, Sara M.L. Sirivanchai
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Plants in the Tropics must evolve strategies for combating high levels of herbivory with few available nutrients. This results in possible tradeoffs between chemical and structural defenses. Three species of tropical passion vines, Passiflora capsularis, Passiflora helleri, and Passiflora sexflora (Passifloraceae) were examined for possible tradeoffs in cyanide, leaf toughness, glands and pubescence as anti-herbivore defenses. One young and one old leaf were collected from ten individuals of each species and analyzed for cyanide concentration and leaf toughness. In addition, observations were made regarding habitat, pubescence and presence or absence of blade glands. From the results it is clear that …

Jumping On The Next Bandwagon: An Overview Of The Policy And Legal Aspects Of The Local Food Movement, Marne Coit
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This article is an exploration of this new and growing local food movement. It is not a cohesive movement, nor is it one that is organized by a particular group. Rather, it is a grassroots movement comprised of people who are interested, for various reasons, in obtaining food grown or produced where they live or in producing this food themselves. The purpose of this article is to explore what the local food movement is, why consumers are interested in basing their food purchasing choices on where their food originates, current and future regulation of local food, and where this movement …

Dangerous Interpretations Of The Precautionary Principle And The Foundational Values Of European Union Food Law: Risk Versus Risk, Miguel A. Recuerda
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In their ordinary lives, many people try to avoid any situation involving risk that could cause themselves harm. On the other hand, others assume risk with greater facility because they are not sufficiently aware of it, or because they know that the probability of resulting damage is very low. Overwhelming worry in the face of any kind of risk would be paralyzing (we would not leave the house, eat in any restaurant outside of our home, drive, or fly). On the contrary, an attitude absolutely heedless of risks would end up causing innumerable damages, some of them irreparable. Common sense …
