Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

I wrote this piece as a sort of Harlot test run. When we began talking about the need for public-oriented rhetorical criticism, Jim Fredal challenged me to figure out what that might look like. I'd recently written a rather academic analysis of Hans Christian Andersen's original "Little Mermaid" and was hoping to make it relevant/current; Disney's version had just been re-released in a "Platinum Edition" DVD and was being adapted into a Broadway show. So it made sense to put it all together, using my sister as my ideal audience: smart, fun, feministá and concerned about her new baby's exposure …

Covering All Kids: States Setting The Pace, Jennifer Ryan, Safiya Mojerie Sep 2008

Covering All Kids: States Setting The Pace, Jennifer Ryan, Safiya Mojerie

National Health Policy Forum

Providing health insurance coverage for the uninsured is a challenge that has remained unresolved for decades. In the absence of a national solution, states have initiated their own efforts to expand access to health insurance coverage, particularly for children. This issue brief provides a history and status of state universal children’s coverage initiatives and features several states that appear to be setting the pace by developing successful strategies for expansion and cultivating the political will and leadership needed to institute them. In highlighting some of the key lessons that can be learned from states’ experiences, this paper may inform the …

Beyond “Classroom” Technology: The Equipment Circulation Program At Rasmuson Library, University Of Alaska Fairbanks, Karen Jensen

Faculty

The library at the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers a unique equipment lending program through its Circulation Desk. The program features a wide array of equipment types, generous circulation policies, and unrestricted borrowing, enabling students, staff, and faculty to experiment with the latest in audio, video, and computer technologies, for both academic and personal enrichment projects. The program enjoys great popularity and significant financial support by the University. The results of a recently conducted online patron survey demonstrate the need for continued support and further development of the equipment lending program.

Hand-Held Flyback Driven Coaxial Dielectric Barrier Discharge: Development And Characterization, Victor J. Law, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Neil O’Connor, James F. Lalor, Steven Daniels

Articles

The development of a handheld single and triple chamber atmospheric pressure coaxial dielectric barrier discharge driven by Flyback circuitry for helium and argon discharges is described. The Flyback uses external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor power switching technology and the transformer operates in the continuous current mode to convert a continuous dc power of 10–33 W to generate a 1.2–1.6 kV 3.5 μs pulse. An argon discharge breakdown voltage of ∼768 V is measured. With a 50 kHz, pulse repetition rate and an argon flow rate of 0.5–10 argon slm (slm denotes standard liters per minute), the electrical power density deposited in …

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

As a scholar in rhetoric and composition and a media artist, I am primarily interested in exploring how people compose with digital technologies, as well as what these compositions mean for their many and varied senses of self, individually and collectively. I also work at the intersection of writing studies and sexuality studies, exploring what it means to "compose queerly," as well as what theories of sexuality, particularly queer theory, have to teach us about literacy in pluralistic democracies. These interests permeate the two digital compositions that Harlot has graciously agreed to publish.
