The Labor Market Of Italian Politicians, Antonio Merlo, Vincenzo Galasso, Massimiliano Landi, Andrea Mattozzi Oct 2008

The Labor Market Of Italian Politicians, Antonio Merlo, Vincenzo Galasso, Massimiliano Landi, Andrea Mattozzi

Research Collection School Of Economics

We analyze the career profiles of Italian legislators in the post-war period. Using a unique, newly collected dataset that contains detailed information on all the politicians who have been elected to the Italian Parliament between 1948 and 2008, we address a number of important issues that pertain to their career paths prior to election to Parliament, their parliamentary careers, and their post-Parliament employment. Our data span two institutional regimes: Italy's First Republic (1948-1994) and the Second Republic (1994-present), characterized by different electoral rules and party structures. We first present a brief overview of the Italian political system. We then provide …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes the implementation and assessment of an innovative senior/graduate level mechatronics (robotics) module that integrated structured and unstructured learning experiences, in collaboration with an industry partner. With real-world constraints and expectations, students designed and delivered a product as the final project. In fall 2007, the corporate partner provided state-of-the-art, programmable robotic kits with a user-friendly programming environment. The assigned project was to design a biomedical robot to work in a hospital intensive care unit (ICU) to perform tasks such as transporting supplies or delivering paperwork. Students with diverse skills and majors were grouped in ten teams, two to …

Carcinogenicity Of Hexavalent Chromium, Amie L. Holmes, S. S. Wise, John P. Wise Sr. Oct 2008

Carcinogenicity Of Hexavalent Chromium, Amie L. Holmes, S. S. Wise, John P. Wise Sr.

Applied Medical Sciences [Discontinued]

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a commonly used industrial metal, is a well known human lung carcinogen. Epidemiology and animal studies suggest that the particulate Cr(VI) compounds, specifically the water insoluble compounds, are the more potent carcinogens, however, the carcinogenic mechanism remains unknown. Here we summarize recent Cr(VI)-induced human tumour, in vivo, cell culture and in vitro studies and put the data into context with three major paradigms of carcinogenesis: multistage carcinogenesis, genomic instability, and epigenetic modifications. Based on these studies, we propose a mechanism for chromate carcinogenesis that is primarily driven by the genomic instability paradigm.

Analysis And Lessons Learned Instituting An Instant Messaging Reference Service At An Academic Health Sciences Library: The First Year, Daniel G. Kipnis

The Selected Works of Dan Kipnis

In February 2006, Thomas Jefferson University went live with a new instant messaging (IM) service. This paper reviews the first 102 transcripts to examine question types and usage patterns. In addition, the paper highlights lessons learned in instituting the service. IM reference represents a small proportion of reference questions, but based on user feedback and technological improvements, the library has decided to continue the service.

Autism And Misdiagnosis: Is Early Detection Always Accurate?, Melissa Hosier Oct 2008

Autism And Misdiagnosis: Is Early Detection Always Accurate?, Melissa Hosier

Theses and Dissertations

Autism is a brain-based disorder that involves disrupted social interactions and communication development along with stereotyped patterns of behaviors and interests. Early detection and intervention is crucial for children diagnosed with autism. While current trends in research and detection are leaning toward earlier diagnosis of the disorder, limited research exists to support that earlier diagnoses are accurate. The present study utilized archival research and interviews to examine the accuracy of early diagnosis in children identified as autistic using DSM-IV criteria, standard screening and diagnostic tools and genetic testing. Results indicated that genetic testing was the most reliable tool for accurately …

The strategies utilized by female superintendents to cope with the trials and tribulations of contemporary educational leadership as reported in both studies are also reviewed. Suggestions for leadership preparation programs are recommended to promote greater personal and professional success in the superintendency. …

Public Financing, George Bush And Barack Obama: Why The Publicly Funded Campaign Does Not Work, And What We Can Do To Fix It, Jordan Acker

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

After the Supreme Court upheld the Federal Election Campaign Act in Buckley v. Valeo, the modern system for campaign finance was born; since the 1980 election, most presidential candidates have accepted some form of public financing. While the current campaign finance system is a major upgrade over the previous system whereby campaigns were funded by a small group of wealthy donors, there are still two major problems. First, the current system discourages the participation of the majority of voters in the political process. Second, the current laws do not reduce the cost of running for President. With these issues in …
