Entitlement, Incivility And Excessive Informality: The Instructional And Administrative Challenges Of Student Misconduct, Stanley H. Barrett, Nadia Rubaii, John Pelowski Oct 2008

Entitlement, Incivility And Excessive Informality: The Instructional And Administrative Challenges Of Student Misconduct, Stanley H. Barrett, Nadia Rubaii, John Pelowski

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

Increasing incidents of incivilities and in some cases outright violence are well documented in K-12 through undergraduate educational setting as well as in the workplace across all sectors, yet the academic and professional literature that reflects and informs public affairs education is striking in its omission of how incivilities necessarily impact our teaching and program administration. In this paper, the authors trace the growing problem of student incivilities, identify contributing factors linked to the entitlement society, and make the case for a more proactive and comprehensive response. They present suggestions for MPA faculty and administrators to use within and outside …

The Special Needs Of Women On College Campuses, Jeremy M. Jenkins, Dewayne A. Neeley, Timothy D. Woodcock, Hao Yuan Oct 2008

The Special Needs Of Women On College Campuses, Jeremy M. Jenkins, Dewayne A. Neeley, Timothy D. Woodcock, Hao Yuan

The College Student Experience (CNS 572)

The authors embarked on a journey to understand the special needs of women college students. They discovered two major themes that were explored in greater depth in an attempt to explain why these themes were more specific to college women than other populations. Although these needs may be extrapolated to other populations of college students they were of particular concern to the female college student population. The authors began by selecting a non-scientific restricted pool of female college students than spanned first-year, second-year and junior or third-year students. This student sample was interviewed to discover their concerns or perceptions about …

Guatemala As A National Crime Scene: Femicide And Impunity In Contemporary U.S. Detective Novels, Susana S. Martínez Oct 2008

Guatemala As A National Crime Scene: Femicide And Impunity In Contemporary U.S. Detective Novels, Susana S. Martínez

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

This paper examines the representation of femicide and impunity in contemporary detective novels set in Guatemala. The Long Night of White Chickens by Francisco Goldman (1992), Body of Truth (1992) by David Lindsey, and Grave Secrets (2002) by Kathy Reichs portray Guatemala in the 1980s and 1990s as a distressing crime scene. The novels depict Guatemala as a dark, frightening place, plagued with inefficient bureaucracy, a chaotic legal system, and a crippled sense of justice where there are dangerous repercussions for searching for and revealing the truth. U.S. journalists, CIA agents, Peace Corps volunteers, forensic scientists, and private investigators navigate …

El Plan Agua Bosque: Impactos Sociales Y Ambiéntales De Las Hidroeléctricas Comunitarias Propuestas En Intag, Jonathan Kadish

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

HidroIntag, a community based company has proposed to construct nine small and medium hydroelectric dams with generation potential of 100MW in total in the zone of Intag. The company plans to reinvest all net profits in activities in the communities, including agroforestry, small agroindustry, tourism, infrastructure, and social services. This study utilizes 18 formal and informal interviews to determine the preferences and concerns of community members about the possibility of having hydroelectric dams in the zone and in what the profits should be invested. The study also utilizes 5 interviews with leaders of HidroIntag and other involved organizations to determine …

Tiling Proofs Of Recent Sum Identities Involving Pell Numbers, Arthur T. Benjamin, Sean S. Plott '08, James A. Sellers Oct 2008

Tiling Proofs Of Recent Sum Identities Involving Pell Numbers, Arthur T. Benjamin, Sean S. Plott '08, James A. Sellers

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In a recent note, Santana and Diaz-Barrero proved a number of sum identities involving the well-known Pell numbers. Their proofs relied heavily on the Binet formula for the Pell numbers. Our goal in this note is to reconsider these identities from a purely combinatorial viewpoint. We provide bijective proofs for each of the results by interpreting the Pell numbers as enumerators of certain types of tilings. In turn, our proofs provide helpful insight for straightforward generalizations of a number of the identities.

"Pop Lock And Drop It": Defining Hip Hop Dance And Culture In The Past And Present, Anastasia Talarico Oct 2008

"Pop Lock And Drop It": Defining Hip Hop Dance And Culture In The Past And Present, Anastasia Talarico

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Currently, the form of dance with consistent and increasing popularity remains Hip Hop. Other modern and contemporary styles including Jazz, Ballet and Tap have concrete definitions and criteria that make those styles of dance distinguished from the rest. Clearly, Hip Hop also has its genuine and distinguishing characteristics, but has found the ability to merge its way into mainstream culture despite its cross-cultural differences and lack of definition. The context in which this Hip Hop dance style has occurred stands out compared to the other styles of dance, and this fact could be the greatest contribution to its overwhelming popularity. …

"Say That To The Anorexic Girl": Eating Disorders And America’S Next Top Model, Stephanie Mccarthy Oct 2008

"Say That To The Anorexic Girl": Eating Disorders And America’S Next Top Model, Stephanie Mccarthy

2009 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Today, reality television stars often become heroes to children. One such hero type is young women with ideal but unrealistic thin bodies that the show America’s Next Top Model for instance exalts. But stick-thin women should be one of the last types of heroes our society should encourage our children glorifying. My presentation will demonstrate how this show sends a contradictory message about the female body: it idealizes thin female bodies while ostensibly advocating good health and high self-esteem as well as giving warning about the dangers of eating disorders. I argue that the show’s hypocritical promotion of the internalization …

Self-Crosslinked Gliadin Fibers With High Strength And Water Stability For Potential Medical Applications, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang Oct 2008

Self-Crosslinked Gliadin Fibers With High Strength And Water Stability For Potential Medical Applications, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

For the first time, protein fibers with excellent mechanical properties and water stability have been produced from gliadin for potential use in tissue culture and other medical applications. Biomaterials developed from plant proteins such as zein and soyproteins are preferred for several medical applications over synthetic polymers such as polylactic acid. However, the plant protein based biomaterials developed so far have poor mechanical properties and hydrolytic stability even after crosslinking. This study aims to develop biomaterials from gliadin with excellent mechanical properties and water stability without using any crosslinking agents. A novel gliadin fiber production method was used to self …
