The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley Oct 2008

The Role Of Curcumin In Human Dendritic Cell Maturation And Function, Shawna A. Shirley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Curcumin is the yellow pigment found in the Indian spice curry. It has anti-inflammatory, ant-oxidant, anti-cancer, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and wound healing properties. It is widely used in industry for its flavor as a spice and as a coloring agent because of its brilliant yellow color. It is also used as a dye for textiles and as an additive to cosmetics. Dendritic cells (DCs) are the sentinels of the immune system and functions as the bridge between the innate and adaptive immune response. The effect of curcumin on DCs is poorly understood. A study shows curcumin prevents the immuno-stimulatory function of …

Design And Analysis Of A Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission, Brandon Levi Haupt Oct 2008

Design And Analysis Of A Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission, Brandon Levi Haupt

Theses and Dissertations

With energy demands at an all time high, mechanical power systems are under great scrutiny. Substantial efforts are being made throughout the world to reduce energy use in common mechanical systems such as the internal combustion engine and transmission system. Eliminating or reducing efficiency losses in the transmission is a potential source of improving the efficiency of the system. To do so, various alternative types of transmissions are being investigated. At Brigham Young University, development of a Positively Engaged Continuously Variable Transmission (PECVT) is progressing. In addition to the efficiency increases that would occur as a result of operating the …

The Importance And Influence Of Philosophical Thinking For Librarians, Nazli Alkan

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Nazli Alkan The Importance and Influence of Philosophical Thinking for Librarians (html) PDF September 2008 This paper explores the importance and influence of the adoption of philosophical thinking by today's librarians and to encourage them in such thinking. Playing With Dolls, Margaret D. Jacobs Oct 2008

Playing With Dolls, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Dolls seem to be a ubiquitous feature of American girlhood, cherished objects played with by girls from many different cultures over many centuries. These three photos show American Indian girls playing with dolls in the early twentieth century. ... On the surface, we might think of dolls as innocent items meant to entertain children, typically (in our own era) girls. Don’t parents give dolls to children simply to amuse them? And don’t dollmakers construct dolls merely to fulfill a demand (and in the case of mass production, to turn a profit)? For many decades now, feminist scholars have read more …

Traversing Swanton Road, 1st Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …
