The Alien As Other: Spiritual, Political, And Cultural Representations Of The Alien In Late 20 Th Century Cinema, Benjamin Franz Oct 2008

The Alien As Other: Spiritual, Political, And Cultural Representations Of The Alien In Late 20 Th Century Cinema, Benjamin Franz

Publications and Research

Storytellers frame their morals and fables of us through the lens of the 'Others'. When the popular form of storytelling evolved into film, the Other naturally became that which was most fascinating and curious, the Intergalactic Entity, or Alien.

In the film Contact(1997), Dr. Ellie Arroway struggles with a disbelief in things greater than herself, and the desire to see what is out there in the cosmos. In Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), strangers are brought together by the vision of harmony set forth by cosmic visitors. The theme of belief in something greater than oneself echoes …

Global Financial Meltdown: Genesis, Consequences, And Lessons, Ishrat Husain Dr. Oct 2008

Global Financial Meltdown: Genesis, Consequences, And Lessons, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

First of all let me thank ICAP for inviting me to this very important meeting. I feel that there is a lack of understanding of the global financial crisis, what its consequences are and more importantly what are the lessons. We all seem to believe in rhetoric, slogans and platitudes and one of the most popular platitudes these days is that ‘capitalism is dead’ and nationalization is the word which will prevail over the entire global finance. If we draw the wrong conclusions we are going to make even more mistakes and, therefore, it is important to put this in …

Quenching Of The Exchange Bias Training In Fe/Cr2o3/Fe Trilayer, Sarbeswar Sahoo, Christian Binek Oct 2008

Quenching Of The Exchange Bias Training In Fe/Cr2o3/Fe Trilayer, Sarbeswar Sahoo, Christian Binek

Christian Binek Publications

Exchange bias (EB) and its associated training effects are studied in an epitaxial Fe(10 nm)/Cr2O3(2.7 nm)/Fe(10 nm) trilayer heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The EB decreases linearly with increasing temperature from T = 5 K to T = 50 K. It changes sign and becomes positive within 50 K < T < 200 K, finally changing back to regular EB for T<200K up to the highest measured temperature of T = 395 K. Remarkably, the latter is far above the bulk Néel temperature TN = 307 K. EB training effects occur only at 5 K < T < 50 K. We show that this training can be quenched by subjecting the system to DC magnetic field, µ0HDC <= 7 T. The applied field most likely induces a temperature dependent spin-flop transition. Upon its removal the antiferromagnetic Cr2O3 pinning layer evolves uniformly into its quasi-equilibrium spin configuration thus leading to quasi-equilibrium EB.

Matrix Metalloproteinases: Roles And Regulation In Ocular Surface Regeneration, Gabriel Mikal Gordon Oct 2008

Matrix Metalloproteinases: Roles And Regulation In Ocular Surface Regeneration, Gabriel Mikal Gordon

Open Access Dissertations

Epithelial wound healing is a common occurrence in many organisms. In spite of a long history of study in this field, we do not have a complete understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of wound healing, which is a key element to appreciate in order to modulate this process for better clinical outcomes. Optimal outcomes are especially critical in the cornea as a failure to regenerate can result in blindness and a huge decline in quality of life. Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc dependent proteases that have been shown to be both regulators and effectors of …

A Meaningful U.S. Cap-And-Trade System To Address Climate Change, Robert Stavins Oct 2008

A Meaningful U.S. Cap-And-Trade System To Address Climate Change, Robert Stavins

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

There is growing impetus for a domestic U.S. climate policy that can provide meaningful reductions in emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. In this article, I propose and analyze a scientifically sound, economically rational, and politically feasible approach for the United States to reduce its contributions to the increase in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. The proposal features an up-stream, economy-wide CO2 cap-and-trade system which implements a gradual trajectory of emissions reductions over time, and includes mechanisms to reduce cost uncertainty. I compare the proposed system with frequently discussed alternatives. In addition, I describe common objections to a cap-and-trade …

Work In Progress: How Do We Teach And Measure Systems Thinking?, Linda Vanasupa, Erika Rogers, Katherine Chen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Since the 1990's blue-ribbon commissions on engineering education have called for educators to graduate engineers who are capable of systems thinking. However, there is sparse information on how to cultivate this type of cognitive development. How do we develop and measure systems thinking? In this paper, we present the first of a series of methods that we are piloting to initiate the systems thinking process. This exercise, developed by Checkland and Scholes and called "Rich Pictures," requires the participant to express a reality in terms of images and connections between these images. We utilized the Rich Pictures exercise in combination …
