Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

We report the synthesis and characterization of amino acid ester based chiral ionic liquids, derived from L- and D-alanine tert butyl ester chloride. The synthesis was accomplished via an anion metathesis reaction between commercially available L- and D-alanine tert butyl ester chloride using a variety of counterions such as lithium bis (trifluoromethane) sulfonimide, silver nitrate, silver lactate, and silver tetrafluoroborate. Both enantiomeric forms were obtained as confirmed by bands of opposite sign in the circular dichroism spectra. The L- and D-alanine tert butyl ester bis (trifluoromethane) sulfonimide were obtained as liquids at room temperature and intriguingly exhibited the highest thermal …

Canadian Legal Ethics: Ready For The Twenty-First Century At Last, Adam M. Dodek Jan 2008

Canadian Legal Ethics: Ready For The Twenty-First Century At Last, Adam M. Dodek

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article analyzes the transformation in the scholarship of legal ethics that has occurred in Canada over the last decade, and maps out an agenda for future research. The author attributes the recent growth of Canadian legal ethics as an academic discipline to a number of interacting factors: a response to external pressures, initiatives within the legal profession, changes in Canadian legal education, and the emergence of a new cadre of legal ethics scholars. This article chronicles the public history of legal ethics in Canada over the last decade and analyzes the first and second wave of scholarship in the …

Sustainable Professionalism, Trevor C. W. Farrow Jan 2008

Sustainable Professionalism, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article challenges traditional visions of lawyering by building on current alternative narratives and articulating a new discourse of professionalism that is personally, politically, ethically, economically, and professionally sustainable. It is a discourse that makes space for lawyers' principles, interests, and life preferences by balancing them with other important interests (including, but not dominated by, those of clients). It is a discourse that seeks to make good on aspirational promises of equality, access to justice, and protecting the public interest. And it is a discourse that takes seriously obligations to, as well as benefits from, the culturally complicated makeup of …

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin Jan 2008

The Public Interest, Professionalism, And Pro Bono Publico, Lorne Sossin

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

There is a clear public interest benefit for lawyers to ensure access to the rule of law, especially on the part of the vulnerable. This article seeks to show that the seemingly simple relationship between the legal profession and the public interest is in fact more complicated than it looks. Pro bono may be viewed from two perspectives-that of the lawyer and that of the client. From the perspective of the lawyer, the important question is whether there is ethical motivation to engage in pro bono. If, however, the perspective of the client is paramount, then meeting the client's needs …

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communications, Gregory A. Smith Jan 2008

Hidden Under A Bushel? Evangelical Journals In An Era Of Web-Based Communications, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

Evangelicals face significant obstacles as they seek to make their publications accessible to potential readers. This study measures the extent to which evangelical scholarly journals have made their contents available in electronic form. Thirty-five journals – all active, refereed, evangelical in perspective, and published in English – were chosen for analysis. Two serials management tools and individual journal Web sites provided data regarding electronic accessibility. Twenty-six of the journals are available in some electronic form – most commonly in one or more aggregated databases. Evangelical information professionals could play a significant role in helping to make additional evangelical journal content …

Christian Publishing: A Panel Discussion, Dennis Hillman, Mark Hunt, Jim Kinney, Jon Pott, Gregory A. Smith

The Christian Librarian

The 2007 conference of the Association of Christian Librarians convened in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on the campus of Cornerstone University. Conference planners invited representatives of four prominent Christian publishers headquartered there (Baker, Eerdmans, Kregel, and Zondervan) to participate in a panel discussion on June 13. The panelists’ 65-minute exchange is transcribed here in slightly abbreviated form. At the beginning of the discussion, panelists were asked to reflect on general trends in the Christian publishing industry. This led naturally to a lengthy conversation about the publishers’ involvement in the creation and licensing of ebooks and other digital products. Finally, panelists were …

Riding The Technological Rapids With The Millennials, Alison R. Jones Jan 2008

Riding The Technological Rapids With The Millennials, Alison R. Jones

The Christian Librarian

The Millennial Generation is generally agreed to be those born between approximately 1982 and 2002. Neil Howe and Bill Strauss are credited with coining the term Millennials, as well as generally defining the birth years of this generation in their book Millennials rising: the next great generation. A few others disagree and define this generation as starting as early as 1979 or as late as 1984; additionally, there are even those who define the Millennial generation as ending as early as 1994.

There is no easy way to define a generation. In the past, many have used the change in …

Consensus Mutagenesis Reveals That Non-Helical Regions Influence Thermal Stability Of Horseradish Peroxidase., Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan Jan 2008

Consensus Mutagenesis Reveals That Non-Helical Regions Influence Thermal Stability Of Horseradish Peroxidase., Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan

Articles

The enzyme horseradish peroxidase has many uses in biotechnology but a stabilized derivative would have even wider applicability. To enhance thermal stability, we applied consensus mutagenesis (used successfully with other proteins) to recombinant horseradish peroxidase and generated five single-site mutants. Unexpectedly, these mutations had greater effects on steady-state kinetics than on thermal stability. Only two mutants (T102A, T110V) marginally exceeded the wild type’s thermal stability (4% and 10% gain in half- life at 50oC respectively); the others (Q106R, Q107D, I180F) were less stable than wild type. Stability of a five-fold combination mutant matched that of Q106R, the least-stable single mutant. …

Transfer Of Ampicillin Resistance From S. Typhimurium Dt104 To E. Coli K12 In Food, Ciara Walsh, Geraldine Duffy, R. O'Mahoney, D. A. Mcdowell, Seamus Fanning

Articles

Aims:  To investigate the transfer of antibiotic resistance from a donor Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 strain to a recipient Escherichia coli K12 strain.

Methods and Results:  Mating experiments were conducted in broth, milk and ground meat (beef) at incubation temperatures of 4, 15, 25 and 37°C for 18 and 36 h. Ampicillin-resistance transfer was observed at similar frequencies in all transfer media at 25 and 37°C (10−4 to 10−5 log10 CFU ml g−1, transconjugants per recipient) for 18 h. At 15°C, transfer was observed in ground meat in the recipient strain (10−6, log10 …

Antibiotic Resistance In Foodborne Pathogens- A Cause For Concern?, Ciara Walsh, Seamus Fanning Jan 2008

Antibiotic Resistance In Foodborne Pathogens- A Cause For Concern?, Ciara Walsh, Seamus Fanning

Articles

The widespread use of antibiotics in food animal production systems has resulted in the emergence of antibiotic resistant zoonotic bacteria that can be transmitted to humans through the food chain. Infection with antibiotic resistant bacteria negatively impacts on public health, due to an increased incidence of treatment failure and severity of disease. Development of resistant bacteria in food animals can result from chromosomal mutations but is more commonly associated with the horizontal transfer of resistance determinants borne on mobile genetic elements. Food may represent a dynamic environment for the continuing transfer of antibiotic resistance determinants between bacteria. Current food preservation …

The Impact Of Blogs On State Politics, Emily Metzgar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

"Information is the currency of democracy" -Thomas Jefferson This research offers the first comprehensive study of state-focused political bloggers in the United States. Applying original data from the author’s nationwide survey of state-focused bloggers conducted during the summer of 2007, this study addresses three primary research questions: Who are the people creating blogs focused on state politics? What motivates these people to initiate and maintain their blogs? Do these blogs play a discernable role in a given state’s politics, and if so, how? Rooted in the literature of framing; agenda setting; uses and gratifications; news norms and routines; media and …
