Update To Ansi/Ans-643-1991 For High-Z Materials And Review Of Particle Transport Theory, Lawrence P Ruggieri Jan 2008

Update To Ansi/Ans-643-1991 For High-Z Materials And Review Of Particle Transport Theory, Lawrence P Ruggieri

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The ANSI/ANS-6.4.3-1991 Standard (ANSI/ANS-6.4.3, 1991), Gamma-Ray Attenuation Coefficients and Buildup Factors for Engineering Materials, presents evaluated gamma-ray elemental attenuation coefficients and single material buildup factors for selected engineering materials for use in shielding calculations. Since its last publication, new particle transport codes and cross-sectional data have become available. Therefore, this study was conducted for the purpose of updating gamma-ray buildup factors for high-Z materials that are presented in ANSI/ANS-6.4.3-1991 by using ENDF/B-VI.8 photo-atomic cross-section library data in MCNPX. The results from MCNPX were relatively in good agreement with those of ANSI/ANS-6.4.3-1991, which were calculated using PALLAS-1D (VII). A sample problem …

When News Breaks, "The Daily Show" Fixes It: Exposing Social Values Through Satire, Daniel Brandon Mccue Jan 2008

When News Breaks, "The Daily Show" Fixes It: Exposing Social Values Through Satire, Daniel Brandon Mccue

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis asserts that news satires (The Daily Show, The Onion, Saturday Night Live, and others) expose the mythological function of news by revealing violations of social values expressed implicitly in news stories. By employing irony, a rhetorical trope, these news satires provide a social critique of people and institutional power. Using a combination of critical analysis, content analysis, and historiography, this thesis defines news, irony, satire, and parody, and explores news satires that have found a mass audience in the United States in the decades following the birth of television. A synthesis of these definitions and explorations will support …

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown Jan 2008

A Relationship Analysis Of Restaurant Inspection Violations, Employee Behaviors, And Inspection Grades, Edward G Mckeown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the paper is to determine whether employee behaviors or non-employee behaviors have a more significant effect on health inspection grades given by the Southern Nevada Health District. As foodborne illness outbreaks continue to rise, discovering whether the violations stem from employee behaviors or from items not related to employee behavior is essential. The results will be useful for both industry and academics in helping to establish a means for understanding where violations occur within food establishments; 205 restaurant health inspections were collected with grades other than 'A'. Behavior based violations had a higher impact on the grade. …

The Conserved Mechanism Of Icsa Polar Targeting Among Proteobacteria, Characterization Of The Omptin Family, And The Roles And Regulation Of Icsp In Shigella Flexneri, Eun-Hae Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Shigella flexneri is a gram-negative intracellular pathogen that is a global health problem, causing severe bacillary dysentery. In the past 30 years, research has enabled us to have a better understanding of the molecular basis of Shigella pathogenesis. In this study, we further expand our knowledge of key determinants at molecular and cellular levels. This work is composed of four separate investigations; Firstly, we examined whether the elusive mechanism of protein targeting found in Shigella is conserved in three closely related gamma-proteobacterial families by using GFP fusions and microscopy. Our results indicate that the mechanism of protein localization to the …

Fabrication Of Superparamagnetic And Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles, Narayan Poudyal

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Monodisperse magnetic nanoparticles with controlled size and geometry have drawn great attention in the last decade for fundamental scientific studies and for their potential applications in advanced materials and devices such as ultra high-density magnetic recording media, exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets, biomedicine and nanodevices. This dissertation focuses on the fabrication and characterization of superparmagnetic and ferromagnetic nanoparticles of hard magnetic materials (FePt, SmCo5, Sm2Co17 and Nd2Fe14B) and soft magnetic materials (CoFe2O4, NiFe2O4 and FeCo). Novel preparation techniques including salt-matrix annealing, surfactant-assisted ball milling and magnetic field milling have been adopted in this study. The FePt nanocrystals with a variety of morphologies …

Organizational Learning In A High-Risk Environment: Responding To An Anthrax Outbreak, Shari R. Veil, Timothy L. Sellnow Jan 2008

Organizational Learning In A High-Risk Environment: Responding To An Anthrax Outbreak, Shari R. Veil, Timothy L. Sellnow

Communication Faculty Publications

The National Center for Food Protection and Defense, a Department of Homeland Security-sponsored Center of Excellence, identified and endorses 10 best practices for risk and crisis communication. The best practices model is designed to aid organizations of all types in preparing for and learning from crisis events. This analysis applied the best practices model to a case study of an anthrax outbreak that fostered a full-blown crisis response. This study analyzes the learning experience of the crisis cohort group that responded to the crisis. The researchers contend that by evaluating a crisis situation using best practices as a benchmarking procedure, …

Do Different Iindustries Report Corporate Social Responsibility Differently?: An Investigation Through The Lens Of Stakeholder Theory, Lorraine Sweeney, Joseph Coughlan Jan 2008

Do Different Iindustries Report Corporate Social Responsibility Differently?: An Investigation Through The Lens Of Stakeholder Theory, Lorraine Sweeney, Joseph Coughlan

Articles

The social responsibility of business has become a major issue in recent years and the reporting of such activity is becoming more prevalent. Companies are attuning to the benefits of being seen as socially responsibly and many industries are jumping on the bandwagon of reporting CSR and using different media to communicate their activities in this arena to their stakeholders. This paper considers the content of one type of such communications, the annual report, and looks at how organisations are taking a focused stakeholder view of CSR rather than a wider view as would be expected from the ambiguity of …

Non-Eea (European Economic Area) Entrepreneurs Face No Additional Barriers Than Their Eu Counterparts, When Starting A Business In Ireland., Anthony Garvey Jan 2008

Non-Eea (European Economic Area) Entrepreneurs Face No Additional Barriers Than Their Eu Counterparts, When Starting A Business In Ireland., Anthony Garvey

Theses

Do ethnic minority entrepreneurs (EMEs) seeking to start up a business in Ireland operate on a level playing field with their EU counterparts? Or are there unique barriers that EMEs face and if so, what are they and how do we tackle them?

This dissertation examines all of these questions and reveals whether racism or red tape, lack of finance or language skills is suffocating ethnic entrepreneurship more.

It explores the very latest research papers, and reports and combines both qualitative and quantitative data, with a series of semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire aimed squarely at entrepreneurs.

The dissertation discovers …

Empowering The Active Jury: A Genuine Tort Reform, Valerie P. Hans Jan 2008

Empowering The Active Jury: A Genuine Tort Reform, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The rallying cry of "tort reform" is frequently associated with changes to the civil justice system that restrict the civil jury or avoid it altogether. Tort reformers have praised United States Supreme Court rulings that have led to greater judicial control over the evidence, especially scientific evidence, which juries hear. Other reformers advocate bifurcation of trials to avoid the possibility of jurors being so negatively influenced by testimony about damages that it affects their liability judgments.

The tort system aims to compensate fairly and equitably those who are injured by others, and to do so in an efficient manner. Concerns …

Percolation-Based Techniques For Upscaling The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Semi-Realistic Geological Media, Bilal Idriss Jan 2008

Percolation-Based Techniques For Upscaling The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Semi-Realistic Geological Media, Bilal Idriss

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

I tested three schemes for "upscaling" the hydraulic conductivity (K) on aquifers with bimodal K distributions. This bimodality (e.g., sand and mud deposits) was intended to capture typical geological conditions. Results were tested with a numerical model. Upscaling techniques used were inspired by schemes interpolating between arithmetic and harmonic means, but are based on percolation theory: 1) Critical path analysis (CPA), 2) Percolation path analysis (PPA, or standard scaling), and a novel scaling approach. Models chosen were both spatially correlated and uncorrelated, with important differences in critical percolation probabilities, Pc. Volume fractions Ps and 1-Ps (with Ps = sand volume …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Lamb3 By P53, Meghna Jani Jan 2008

Transcriptional Regulation Of Lamb3 By P53, Meghna Jani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The p53 tumor-suppressor plays a very important role in the prevention of cancer and it is known that about 50% of all human tumors possess p53 mutations. Although mutations in p53 are most prevalent in human cancers, inactivation of wild-type p53 occurs through many different mechanisms that are independent of p53 mutation or deletion. In an effort to determine novel p53 target genes, our lab employed a microarray method in which p53 was re-activated by RNAi mediated knockdown of Hdm2 and HdmX in MCF7 human breast cancer cell line, harboring wild-type p53 and elevated levels of Hdm2 and HdmX. Gene …

The Morality Of Prophylactic Legislation (With Special Reference To Speed Limits, Assisted Suicide, Torture, And Detention Without Trial), Michael C. Dorf Jan 2008

The Morality Of Prophylactic Legislation (With Special Reference To Speed Limits, Assisted Suicide, Torture, And Detention Without Trial), Michael C. Dorf

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

My subject is the morality of prophylactic legislation. What do I mean by ‘prophylactic’ legislation? Let me illustrate the concept by drawing a contrast with the most famous hypothetical case in the scholarly literature of Anglo-American jurisprudence. During the course of their debate over the relation between law and morality, Lon Fuller and H. L. A. Hart disagreed about what tools are needed to discern the meaning and scope of a rule barring vehicles from a public park. Hart and Fuller clashed over whether legislative purpose and considerations of morality enter into the process of discerning what Hart famously called …

Jury Systems Around The World, Valerie P. Hans Jan 2008

Jury Systems Around The World, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Lay citizens participate as decision makers in the legal systems of many countries. This review describes the different approaches that countries employ to integrate lay decision makers, contrasting in particular the use of juries composed of all citizens with mixed decision-making bodies of lay and law-trained judges. The review discusses research on the benefits and drawbacks of lay legal decision making as well as international support for the use of ordinary citizens as legal decision makers, with an eye to explaining a recent increase in new jury systems around the world. The review calls for more comparative work on diverse …

Information Policy For The Library Of Babel, James Grimmelmann Jan 2008

Information Policy For The Library Of Babel, James Grimmelmann

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The image of Borges's Library of Babel, which contains all possible books, is haunting and suggestive. This essay asks what we would do if we were advising a Federal Library Commission on how to deal with the Library's vast holdings and overwhelming disorganization. This thought exercise provides a set of sensible principles for information policy in an age of extreme informational abundance.

The Making Of The Post-War Paradigm In American Intellectual Property Law, Steven Wilf Jan 2008

The Making Of The Post-War Paradigm In American Intellectual Property Law, Steven Wilf

Faculty Articles and Papers

During the New Deal period, intellectual property underwent a transformation. Copyright was recast from literary property to industrial property; trademark shifted from a common law tort of palming off to a regulatory regime for a mass consumer economy, and patent law was rethought to accommodate corporate invention. This essay begins by examining the advantages of looking at intellectual property as deeply situated in New Deal debates over political economy, and calls for a new history of intellectual property very different from conventional narratives moored in the introduction of new technologies. More broadly, it suggests that examining foundational past policy debates, …
