Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades Jan 2008

Models Of Phototransduction In Rod Photoreceptors, Harihar Khanal, Vasilios Alexiades

Publications

Phototransduction is the process by which photons of light generate an electrical response in retinal rod and cone photoreceptors, thereby initiating vision. We compare the electrical response in salamander rods from increasingly more (spacialy) detailed models of phototransduction: 0-dimensional (bulk), 1-dimensional (longitudinal), 2-dimensional (axisymmetric), and 3-dimensional (with incisures). We discuss issues of finding physical parameters for simulation and validation of models, and also present some computational experiments for rods with geometry of mouse and human photoreceptors.

On Estimating The Exponent Of Power-Law Frequency Distributions, Ethan P. White, B. J. Enquist, J. L. Green

Biology Faculty Publications

Power-law frequency distributions characterize a wide array of natural phenomena. In ecology, biology, and many physical and social sciences, the exponents of these power-laws are estimated to draw inference about the processes underlying the phenomenon, to test theoretical models, and to scale up from local observations to global patterns. Therefore, it is essential that these exponents be estimated accurately. Unfortunately, the binning-based methods traditionally utilized in ecology and other disciplines perform quite poorly. Here we discuss more sophisticated methods for fitting these exponents based on cumulative distribution functions and maximum likelihood estimation. We illustrate their superior performance at estimating known …

The Reproductive Cycle Of Lytechinus Variegatus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) From The Florida Panhandle, Adele Cunningham Jan 2008

The Reproductive Cycle Of Lytechinus Variegatus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea) From The Florida Panhandle, Adele Cunningham

All ETDs from UAB

The range of the regular echinoid Lytechinus variegatus extends from the Carolinas along the US Atlantic coast to Brazil. To our knowledge, the present study is the northernmost study to examine histology of the reproductive cycle of Lytechinus variegatus. From April 2001 to September 2003, at intervals of about 4-6 weeks, L. variegatus with an average diameter of 45 mm were collected at Eagle Harbor in St. Joseph’s Bay, Florida.. A staging system for gamete development and maturation based on histology of the gonad was devised for female and male L. variegatus. Histology indicated a period of nutrient storage and …

Getting It Right: A Multiple Case Study Of Exemplary Ari Schools, Anne Knowlton Jan 2008

Getting It Right: A Multiple Case Study Of Exemplary Ari Schools, Anne Knowlton

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative multiple case study described the integration of the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) in three exemplary, yet very dissimilar elementary schools. Studies have shown that ARI has been successful in improving reading in Alabama schools. This study addressed the gap in the literature regarding exactly how this improvement has taken place. An urban school, a rural school, and a suburban school, which have reached an overall benchmark level of 90% or higher, were used for this study. Participants for the research included the principal, reading coach, and kindergarten through third grade teachers at each site. Data were collected in …

Human Identity: The Question Presented By Human-Animal Hybridization, Jospeh Vining Jan 2008

Human Identity: The Question Presented By Human-Animal Hybridization, Jospeh Vining

Other Publications

What makes each of us, as individuals, human to one another, or, more generally, what makes an individual creature human? We have not often had to ask the question because of the species line based on reproductive capacity and incapacity, although "degrees of humanness" were explored in the various eugenic programs of the last century. Now the biotechnological possibility of fusing human and other forms of life is presenting the question in a new and serious way. If the traditional biological means of defining species are no longer reliable, what other criteria might determine what is "human" and what is …

Teaching Contradiction: A Case Study, Michael Townsend Jan 2008

Teaching Contradiction: A Case Study, Michael Townsend

Articles

One of the most difficult realities confronting first-year law students is that American legal education is simultaneously theoretical and metatheoretical. At one moment students are at the "theoretical" level, by which I mean that they work "within" or "inside" the "black letter" in the context of various factual settings. In the next instant, students move to the "meta-theoretical" level, talking "about" the black letter from a number of "perspectives." That is, they slide between "learning law" and "learning about law." Many students find such transitions to be problematic, bewildering, and even stressful.

One response, for students and teachers alike, is …

Disk-Shaped Bose-Einstein Condensates In The Presence Of An Harmonic Trap And An Optical Lattice, Todd Kapitula, Panayotis G. Kevrekidis, D. J. Frantzeskakis

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We study the existence and stability of solutions of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the combined presence of a parabolic and a periodic potential. The motivating physical example consists of Bose-Einstein condensates confined in an harmonic (e.g., magnetic) trap and an optical lattice. By connecting the nonlinear problem with the underlying linear spectrum, we examine the bifurcation of nonlinear modes out of the linear ones for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. In particular, we find real-valued solutions (such as multipoles) and complex-valued ones (such as vortices). A primary motivation of the present work is to develop "rules of thumb" …

The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen Jan 2008

The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen

Connecticut Law Review

Toxic torts is a relatively new area of the law, but its seeds were sown a century ago with developments in modern culture. The design, manufacture, and marketing of the cigarette constituted one such development, one with far-reaching legal consequences which continue to challenge the legal system today. This Article is built around Allan M. Brandt’s 2007 public health history of cigarettes, The Cigarette Century. It uses Brandt’s book as a stepping stone to a broader discussion of current critical issues in toxic tort law. The Article begins with a review of the book, then moves into a discussion of …

Fair Use And Copyright Overenforcement, Thomas F. Cotter Jan 2008

Fair Use And Copyright Overenforcement, Thomas F. Cotter

Articles

Economic analysis has long suggested that there are two distinct categories of cases in which the fair use defense, which permits the unauthorized reproduction and other use of copyrighted materials, should apply: first, when the transaction cost of negotiating with the copyright owner for permission to use exceeds the private value of the use to the would-be user; and second, when the individual use is thought to generate some positive externality, such that the net social value of the use exceeds the value to the copyright owner of preventing the use, which in turn may exceed the value of the …

A Framework For Efficient Data Distribution In Peer-To-Peer Networks., Darshan Purandare Jan 2008

A Framework For Efficient Data Distribution In Peer-To-Peer Networks., Darshan Purandare

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Peer to Peer (P2P) models are based on user altruism, wherein a user shares its content with other users in the pool and it also has an interest in the content of the other nodes. Most P2P systems in their current form are not fair in terms of the content served by a peer and the service obtained from swarm. Most systems suffer from free rider's problem where many high uplink capacity peers contribute much more than they should while many others get a free ride for downloading the content. This leaves high capacity nodes with very little or no …
