How Do You Interpret A Confidence Interval?, Paul Savory
How Do You Interpret A Confidence Interval?, Paul Savory
Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Instructional Materials
A confidence interval (CI) is an interval estimate of a population parameter. Instead of estimating the parameter by a single value, a point estimate, an interval likely to cover the parameter is developed. Many student incorrectly interpret the meaning of a confidence interval. This paper offers a quick overview of how to correctly interpret a confidence interval.
Channel-Aware Peer Selection In Multi-View Peer-To-Peer Multimedia Streaming, Miao Wang, Lisong Xu, Byrav Ramamurthy
Channel-Aware Peer Selection In Multi-View Peer-To-Peer Multimedia Streaming, Miao Wang, Lisong Xu, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Motivated by the success of the Picture in Picture feature of the traditional TV, several commercial Peer-to-Peer Multi-Media Streaming (P2PMMS) applications now support the multi-view feature, with which a user can simultaneously watch multiple channels on its screen. This paper considers the peer selection problem in multi-view P2PMMS. This problem has been well studied in the traditional single-view P2PMMS; however, it becomes more complicated in multi-view P2PMMS, mainly due to the fact that a peer watching multiple channels joins multiple corresponding overlays. In this paper, we propose a novel peer selection algorithm, called Channel-Aware Peer Selection (CAPS), where a peer …
A Scoop From Groups: Equational Foundations For Loops, J.D. Phillips
A Scoop From Groups: Equational Foundations For Loops, J.D. Phillips
Journal Articles
Groups are usually axiomatized as algebras with an associative binary operation, a two-sided neutral element, and with two-sided inverses. We show in this note that the same simplicity of axioms can be achieved for some of the most important varieties of loops. In particular, we investigate loops of Bol-Moufang type in the underlying variety of magmas with two-sided inverses, and obtain “group-like” equational bases for Moufang, Bol and C-loops. We also discuss the case when the inverses are only one-sided and/or the neutral element is only one-sided.

The Elementary Persuasive Letter: Two Cases Of Situated Competence, Strategy, And Agency, Diane Downer Anderson
Educational Studies Faculty Works
Research on persuasive writing by elementary children posits primarily a developmental perspective, claiming that elementary-age children can effectively argue through talk but not through writing. While this view is commonly held, this article presents counterevidence. Drawing on two cases of third and fourth grade children writing persuasive letters gathered during six-month naturalistic studies of literacy practices and social identities in contrastive communities (one urban, one suburban), these data challenge the developmental generalization by showing that children in these settings can write persuasively. Further, this work complicates understandings of children's persuasive writing by showing how assignments and local cultures shape children's …

Experiments were conducted to measure the changes in bulk density of cracked corn, corn meal, soybean meal, cotton seed meal, and distillers dried grain (without solubles) when subjected to simulated overburden pressures. All materials were tested at two moisture content levels (approximately 8% and 12% w.b.) and seven pressures between 0 and 69 kPa (0 and 10 psi). A mathematical model was fitted to the data to predict the bulk density of each feed ingredient as a function of pressure and moisture content. These relationships were inserted into a previously developed computer model to predict ingredient packing within conventional storage …

Bringing The Ivory Tower And Real World Together: Lessons Learned In The Collaborative Process Of Preparing Effective Teachers, Tina D. Butcher, Jan G. Burcham, Deirdre C. Greer, Mary Beth Hendricks
Perspectives In Learning
When the “ivory tower” world of educator preparation faculty collides with the “real world” of in-service teachers, the result can be a partnership that is committed to preparing teachers equipped to meet the needs of diverse learners in 21st century classrooms. The lessons learned in the development of such a partnership include a focus on: a) authentic engagement of all stakeholders; b) honest, diplomatic, and timely communication; c) support and scaffolding for pre-service teachers; d) a variety of authentic assessment measures; and e) assistance for new teachers during the induction period. Strengthening the bonds between university faculty and classroom teachers …
Transforming A Curriculum Center For The 21st Century At Eastern Washington University Libraries, Julie Miller, Nadean Meyer
Transforming A Curriculum Center For The 21st Century At Eastern Washington University Libraries, Julie Miller, Nadean Meyer
Scholarship and Professional Work
Teacher education is a vital component of Eastern Washington University’s (EWU) mission and history. In 2006, after several years of decline in collections and usage of its curriculum center, EWU Libraries made a commitment to transform it into a center for twenty-first century educators. The center has changed greatly in a short time with five conditions facilitating the center’s rapid transformation from an outdated, infrequently used corner of the library to a vibrant and busy hub. These conditions for change include: a librarian who acts as catalyst; a visioning process; essential structures upon which to build; the ability to reallocate …

Pre-Settlement Vegetation At Casey's Paha State Preserve, Iowa, Reid J. Leichty, Steven H. Emerman, Lyndon R. Hawkins, Michael J. Tiano
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Paha are loess-capped ridges standing 10-30 m above the surrounding plain of the Iowan Surface. Although Iowa was almost entirely covered with prairie and wetlands just prior to Euro-American settlement, the paha are believed to have been forested based on soil types and on early vegetation maps. The objective of this study was to find evidence that paha were forested by measuring the δ13C value of humin, the fraction of soil organic matter that is insoluble in acid and base. Previous work has shown that humin retains the δ13C signature of vegetation on a 1000-year time scale, as opposed to …

Assessment Of Smallmouth Bass Populations In Iowa Interior Rivers, Andrew C. Jansen, Michael C. Quist, Jeff Kopaska
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu are a popular sport fish throughout North America and occupy an important ecological role as top predators in aquatic systems. Despite the importance of smallmouth bass, knowledge of their population structure and dynamics in Iowa interior rivers is limited. The objective of this study was to describe population dynamics (e.g., relative abundance, size and age structure, growth, mortality) of smallmouth bass in six Iowa rivers. Smallmouth bass were sampled from the Upper Iowa, Maquoketa, and Wapsipinicon rivers in northeast Iowa and the Des Moines, Iowa, and South Skunk rivers in central Iowa using electrofishing during the …

The Effect Of External Wings On The Behavior Of Suction Anchor, H. Monajemi, H. Abdul Razak
The Effect Of External Wings On The Behavior Of Suction Anchor, H. Monajemi, H. Abdul Razak
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Suction anchors may be subjected to quasihorizontal, quasivertical or inclined loading depending on the type of structure and the water depth. The loading conditions can give rise to horizontal and vertical loads, and moments. To achieve the best performance, suction anchors may be used in different ways. A single cylindrical unit is normally used for typical floaters, and to achieve higher load resistance a cluster of several attached cylinders may be installed. They may also be used with external wings to optimize the horizontal holding capacity by an enlarged projected area. The behaviour of the suction anchor subjected to lateral …

Early Numeracy Level Of Year 1 Primary School Pupils In A Felda Area In Negeri Sembilan, S.N.A. Syed Zamri
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Numeracy is at the forefront of contemporary educational in several parts of the world; however it is a relatively new concept in Malaysia. The focus of this research is early numeracy which refers to early mathematical competence or underlying foundations to be mastered by children before they begin learning the formal mathematics in Year 1. Despite the lack of consensus and clarity regarding the meaning of early numeracy, van de Rijt (1996) as reported by Torbeyns, et al. (2002) identified eight aspects considered crucial for developing early numeracy. Her 'synthetic model' incorporated both Pigetian perspectives and counting skills. Specifically, the …

Effect Of Electrode Geometric Parameters On Droplet Translocation In Digital Micro-Fluidic Biosensor, M.P. Yogarajan, F. Ibrahim, N. Soin
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
This paper reports a study of an electrowettingon-dielectric (EWOD) biochip capable of droplet translocation. The study composed of an analytical analysis, observed the switching rate of droplet in variation the electrode width, electrode pitch, electrode thickness. It has been shown that at a fixed voltage and other design geometries, the switching rate of a water droplet is proportional to the electrode thickness and size and inversely proportional to electrode pitch. This results can be used to characterize the droplet translocation for a reprogrammable biochip. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

Outlier Evaluation For The Bilinear Time Series Model., I.B. Mohamed, M.I. Ismail
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
The problem of detecting an outlier and then identifying its type for bilinear time series data is studied. The e®ects of temporary change type of outlier on the observations and residuals for general bilinear processes are considered and the corresponding least-squares measure of the decision threshold is proposed. Due to the complexity of the statistics, we use a bootstrapping method to estimate the mean and standard deviation of the threshold statistics. We look at the ability of the proposed procedure to correctly detect temporary change type of outlier when compared to additive outlier and innovational outlier procedures developed in previous …
