Rear Impact Crashworthiness Of A Manual Wc19 Wheelchair Occupied By A 50th Percentile Atd., Zdravko Salipur

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For persons with disabilities, access to transportation is necessary for integration into society. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been instrumental in assuring transportation access to individuals with disabilities for purposes of employment, education, and recreation. A substantial number of wheelchair users may not be able to transfer from their wheelchair to a motor vehicle seat during transportation. It is necessary to afford these wheelchair users the same level of safety as occupants seated in motor vehicle seats. The purpose of this study was to investigate the response of a manual wheelchair used as a motor vehicle seat, while …

A Pumping Lemma For Homometric Rhythms, Joseph O'Rourke, Perouz Taslakian, Godfried Toussaint Dec 2008

A Pumping Lemma For Homometric Rhythms, Joseph O'Rourke, Perouz Taslakian, Godfried Toussaint

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Homometric rhythms (chords) are those with the same histogram or multiset of intervals (distances). The purpose of this note is threefold. First, to point out the potential importance of isospectral vertices in a pair of homometric rhythms. Second, to establish a method ("pumping") for generating an infinite sequence of homometric rhythms that include isospectral vertices. And finally, to introduce the notion of polyphonic homometric rhythms, which apparently have not been previously explored.

Modelling Hydrocarbons Transport In The Aquifer Of Bu Hasa Field And Evaluation Of Remediation Alternatives, Nawal Eisa Saleh Al Junaibi Dec 2008

Modelling Hydrocarbons Transport In The Aquifer Of Bu Hasa Field And Evaluation Of Remediation Alternatives, Nawal Eisa Saleh Al Junaibi

Theses

The release of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) to groundwater reservoirs is a serious and widespread environmental problem. In 2000, free phase hydrocarbon was discovered in Liwa aquifer under Bu Hasa Liquid Recovery Plant (LRP). Liwa aquifer is a shallow unconfined aquifer and represents the main water supply in the camp area of Bu Hasa field. Dissolved benzene is observed in at least one observation well in the site. This research is conducted to simulate the fate and transport of the dissolved benzene plume in the groundwater of Liwa aquifer using the finite element model (METABIOTRANS).

The mam objective of this …

Surface Water Interaction With The Flood Plain In The Lower Virgin River, Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrie L. Pompeo Dec 2008

Surface Water Interaction With The Flood Plain In The Lower Virgin River, Clark County, Nevada, Jeffrie L. Pompeo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Development of existing surface water rights on the Virgin River would decrease Southern Nevada's dependency on the Colorado River. Three monitoring sites were established to examine the relationship between Virgin River surface water flows and the floodplain aquifer. Automated water level measuring devices were installed in piezometers and wells to continuously track water levels and flow direction. Pump tests were conducted to establish the hydraulic parameters of the floodplain aquifer. Water chemistry data was analyzed to help determine the correlation between the floodplain aquifer and Virgin River water. Precipitation, recharge, streamflow and ET estimates were used to discuss water budgets. …

Modeling Of Particle Trajectories Of Coal Size And Density Fractions In A Gasifier, Andrew A. Slezak Jr. Dec 2008

Modeling Of Particle Trajectories Of Coal Size And Density Fractions In A Gasifier, Andrew A. Slezak Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A computational model of a generic commercial two-stage entrained-flow up-flow coal gasifier has been used in the present work to aid the researchers of the coal partitioning project at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). Specifically, the level of variation in the predicted performance in a generic entrained-flow gasifier if both coal slurry density fractions as well as diameter fractions are properly modeled in the CFD simulation was determined.;Simulations were performed using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent for a Pittsburgh #8 Bailey coal to analyze fixed carbon conversion, exit gas volume fractions, and particle trajectory patterns. The …

Republican Mothers Of And Above Their Time: Abigail Adams And Theodosia Burr Alston, Joanna Lyn Reynolds

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Unique in their time, Abigail Adams and Theodosia Burr Alston possessed intellectual accomplishments, social prominence, and economic status. Also, both women enjoyed supportive marriages with influential husbands as well as proximity to leading male figures of the Revolution and the new nation. Yet, similar to other women of their era, Abigail Adams and Theodosia Burr Alston nurtured their children's educational and moral development, supported their husbands' public service, and kept informed about current events. While marked differences in lifestyle, geographic environment, familial dynamics, and the public and political affiliations of their male family members distinguished them from each other, as …

Modeling Natural Fracture Networks: Establishing The Groundwork For Flow Simulation At Teapot Dome, Wyoming, Valerie L. Smith Dec 2008

Modeling Natural Fracture Networks: Establishing The Groundwork For Flow Simulation At Teapot Dome, Wyoming, Valerie L. Smith

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Local properties of a fractured reservoir are characterized using borehole geophysical logs. These properties are extrapolated to reservoir scale for future use in flow simulation and history matching exercises. The development of a reservoir scale fracture model is undertaken using data for the Tensleep oil reservoir at Teapot Dome, Wyoming. The Tensleep reservoir intervals at Teapot Dome are formed in tight eolian sands that produce primarily from open fracture systems. On the local scale, FMI logs were used to define the dominant systematic fracture sets existing in the reservoir. FMI logs reveal the presence of open fracture systems that consist …

An Ecological Framework For Evaluating Map Errors Using Fuzzy Sets, John H. Lowry Jr., R. Douglas Ramsey, Lisa Langs Stoner, Jessica Kirby, Keith Schulz Dec 2008

An Ecological Framework For Evaluating Map Errors Using Fuzzy Sets, John H. Lowry Jr., R. Douglas Ramsey, Lisa Langs Stoner, Jessica Kirby, Keith Schulz

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

The use of fuzzy sets to assess uncertainty in land-use/cover maps provides a robust conceptual framework for examining unique characteristics of map error. By recognizing the possibility of gradations of error, fuzzy sets can be used to assess errors due to class similarity, or the sensitivity of the map legend to class boundaries. Building on the theoretical work of Gopal and Woodcock (1994), we present a practical methodology for assessing map errors using fuzzy sets. A key component of our methodology focuses on improving the decision-making process map experts assume when conducting a fuzzy set assessment of map errors. Using …

Sequence Alignment With Traceback On Reconfigurable Hardware, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell Dec 2008

Sequence Alignment With Traceback On Reconfigurable Hardware, Scott Lloyd, Quinn O. Snell

Faculty Publications

Biological sequence alignment is an essential tool used in molecular biology and biomedical applications. The growing volume of genetic data and the complexity of sequence alignment present a challenge in obtaining alignment results in a timely manner. Known methods to accelerate alignment on reconfigurable hardware only address sequence comparison, limit the sequence length, or exhibit memory and I/O bottlenecks. A space-efficient, global sequence alignment algorithm and architecture is presented that accelerates the forward scan and traceback in hardware without memory and I/O limitations. With 256 processing elements in FPGA technology, a performance gain over 300 times that of a desktop …

Role Of The Lpa2 Receptor In Protecting Against Apoptosis, Shuyu E Dec 2008

Role Of The Lpa2 Receptor In Protecting Against Apoptosis, Shuyu E

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a naturally occurring lipid mediator. It exists abundantly in biological fluids such as serum, saliva, follicular fluid, seminal fluid and malignant effusions and induces a vast array of biological responses affecting cell growth, survival, differentiation, migration and morphology. We recently identified lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) as a potent antiapoptotic agent for the intestinal epithelium. Based on computational modeling octadecenyl thiophosphate (OTP) was synthesized: a novel rationally designed, metabolically stabilized LPA mimic. OTP was more efficacious than LPA in reducing g-irradiation-, camptothecin-, or TNF-a/cycloheximide-induced apoptosis and caspase 3, 8 and 9 activity in the IEC-6 cell line. The …

Assessment And Accountability: An Exploration Of Teachers' Practices In Assessing English Language Proficiency, Mari B. Rasmussen Dec 2008

Assessment And Accountability: An Exploration Of Teachers' Practices In Assessing English Language Proficiency, Mari B. Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

Assessment is an important component in an education program. Current educational policy includes large scale assessments with stringent accountability requirements. All students are expected to meet standards for achievement, including those who have historically not been successful.

Students from non-English language backgrounds are one of the populations of students who do not achieve academic success at the same rate as other students. This population of students is increasing in our nation's schools, causing this achievement gap to be of greater concern. Added to the concern is the requirement that English Language Learners (ELLs) must meet rigorous standards in both academic …

The Vascular Flora Of The North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Natural Area, Hamilton & Sequatchie Counties, Tennessee, Stacy D. Huskins

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The vascular flora of the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge State Natural Area (NCCG) was studied during three growing seasons from 2006 to 2008. NCCG is located in Hamilton and Sequatchie counties, Tennessee, on the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau. Within the study area are 2,862 hectares of eastern deciduous forest that contain 12 distinct habitat types. A survey of these habitat types over three growing seasons yielded 110 families, 329 genera, and 604 species or lesser taxa, including 238 county records. Seventy-six introduced species were found, comprising 12% of the total flora. Eleven species with either a state or …
