Experimentation Collection

Despite considerable research, effective and safe treatments for human pain disorders remain elusive. Understanding the biology of different human pain conditions and researching effective treatments continue to be dominated by animal models, some of which are of limited value. British and European legislation demands that non-animal approaches should be considered before embarking on research using experimental animals. Recent scientific and technical developments, particularly in human neuroimaging, offer the potential to replace some animal procedures in the study of human pain. A group of pain research experts from academia and industry met with the aim of exploring creatively the tools, strategies …

Mixing In Shallow Cumulus Clouds Studied By Lagrangian Particle Tracking, Thijs Heus, Gertjan Van Dijk, Harmen J.J. Jonker, Harry E.A. Van Den Akker

Physics Faculty Publications

Mixing between shallow cumulus clouds and their environment is studied using large-eddy simulations. The origin of in-cloud air is studied by two distinct methods: 1) by analyzing conserved variable mixing diagrams (Paluch diagrams) and 2) by tracing back cloud-air parcels represented by massless Lagrangian particles that follow the flow. The obtained Paluch diagrams are found to be similar to many results in the literature, but the source of entrained air found by particle tracking deviates from the source inferred from the Paluch analysis. Whereas the classical Paluch analysis seems to provide some evidence for cloud-top mixing, particle tracking shows that …

Imagine Math Day: Encouraging Secondary School Students And Teachers To Engage In Authentic Mathematical Discovery, Darryl H. Yong, Michael E. Orrison Jr.

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Research mathematicians and school children experience mathematics in profoundly different ways. Ask a group of mathematicians what it means to “do mathematics” and you are likely to get a myriad of responses: mathematics involves analyzing and organizing patterns and relationships, reasoning and drawing conclusions about the world, or creating languages and tools to describe and solve important problems. Students of mathematics often report “doing mathematics” as performing calculations or following rules. It’s natural that they see mathematics as monolithic rather than an evolving, growing, socially constructed body of knowledge, because most mathematical training in primary and secondary schools consists of …

Received 2 April 2008; published 1 August 2008; corrected 1 October 2008

At high area fractions, monolayers of colloidal dimer particles form a degenerate crystal (DC) structure in which the particle lobes occupy triangular lattice sites while the particles are oriented randomly along any of the three lattice directions. We report that dislocation glide in DCs is blocked by certain particle orientations. The mean number of lattice constants between such obstacles is Z̅ exp=4.6±0.2 in experimentally observed DC grains and Z̅ sim=6.18±0.01 in simulated monocrystalline DCs. Dislocation propagation beyond these obstacles is observed to proceed through dislocation reactions. …

E-Transcript Web Services System Supporting Dynamic Conversion Between Xml And Edi, Myungjae Kwak '11, Woohyun Kang '14, Gondy Leroy, Samir Chatterjee

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

As XML becomes a standard for communications between distributed heterogeneous machines, many schools plan to implement Web Services systems using the XML e-transcript (electronic transcript) standard. We propose a framework that supports both XML e-transcript Web Services and existing EDI e-transcript systems. The framework uses the workflow engine to exploit the benefits of workflow management mechanisms. The workflow engine manages the e-transcript business process by enacting and completing the tasks and sub-processes within the main business process. We implemented the proposed framework by using various open source projects including Java, Eclipse, and Apache Software Foundation’s Web Services projects. Compared with …

Service Oriented Transitive Closure Solution, Jonathan Baran

Computer Science and Computer Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The goal of this project is a service based solution that utilizes parallel and distributed processing algorithms to solve the transitive closure problem for a large dataset. A dataset may be view conceptually as a table in a database, with a physical structure representing a file containing a sequence of records and fields. Two records are said to be transitively related if and only if they are directly related due to sharing of one or more specific fields, or a sequence may be made from one record to the other under the condition that all intermediate entries are related the …

Hypothesis Testing With Interval Data: Case Of Regulatory Constraints, Sa-Aat Niwitpong, Hung T. Nguyen, Ingo Neumann, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, there exist regulatory thresholds: e.g., a concentration of certain chemicals in the car exhaust cannot exceed a certain level, etc. If we know the exact value of the corresponding quantity, then we can immediately tell whether, e.g., a car design resulting in this value is acceptable (below the threshold) or not acceptable (above the threshold). In practice, however, the value of the desired quantity comes from measurements or from expert estimates; in both cases, the resulting estimates are not 100% accurate. It is therefore necessary to make an accept/reject decision based on this estimate, i.e., based …

Composition-Tunable Properties Of Cdsxte1-X Alloy Nanocrystals, Nilanka P. Gurusinghe, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Mikhail Zamkov

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Ternary CdSxTe1-x semiconductor quantum dots with both homogeneous and gradient composition have been fabricated via pyrolysis of organometallic precursors. The nanocrystal structure, size, and composition were characterized by UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray elemental analysis, and X-ray diffractrometry. It was found that the band gap of homogeneously alloyed CdSxTe1-x is highly nonlinear with the crystalline composition, which was evidenced by a significant red-shift in the fluorescence of these nanocrystals with respect to the emission wavelength of their CdS and CdTe binary compounds. This effect, also known as optical bowing, seems to be enhanced in CdSxTe1-x …

On Distribution Of Well-Rounded Sublattices Of Z², Lenny Fukshansky Aug 2008

On Distribution Of Well-Rounded Sublattices Of Z², Lenny Fukshansky

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we completely describe well-rounded full-rank sublattices of Z², as well as their determinant and minima sets. We show that the determinant set has positive density, deriving an explicit lower bound for it, while the minima set has density 0. We also produce formulas for the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant and with a fixed minimum. These formulas are related to the number of divisors of an integer in short intervals and to the number of its representations as a sum …

Controls On Longitudinal Profiles In Headwater Rivers Of The Waipaoa Basin, North Island, New Zealand, David M. Livingston Aug 2008

Controls On Longitudinal Profiles In Headwater Rivers Of The Waipaoa Basin, North Island, New Zealand, David M. Livingston

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The longitudinal profiles of the adjacent Mangatu and Upper Waipaoa Rivers, of the Waipaoa basin of the North Island of New Zealand, differ in their form despite their similarity in size and that they flow over comparable bedrock. AdditionaJly, both basins have experienced an increase in sediment supply following deforestation during the 19th and 20th centuries. This research addresses how the deviations in the long profiles of the Mangatu and Upper Waipaoa Rivers have arisen and what effect the increased sediment loading has had on their form. Using methods similar to those of Hack (1957), who found that in same …

Doping Poly[2-Methoxy-5-(2′-Ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-Phenylenevinylene] With Pbse Nanoparticles Or Fullerenes, D. K. Chambers, Zhaoyan Zhang, F. Khatkhatay, S. Karanam, Orhan Kizilkaya, Yaroslav B. Losovyj, Sandra Zivanovic Selmic

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

The positions of the molecular orbitals of the conjugated semiconducting polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV), relative to the Fermi level, shift when lead selenide (PbSe) quantum dots or the fullerene based molecule [(6)]-1-(3-(methoxycarbonyl)propyl)-[(5)]-1-phenyl-[5,6]-C61, known as PCBM, are dispersed in the polymer host. This is evident from the consistent shifts of occupied molecular orbitals and the valence band edge to greater binding energies and a decrease in density of states near the Fermi level, as probed by photoemission. In the case of PbSe nanocrystal quantum dots, far smaller binding energy shifts were observed. This behavior seems more characteristic of a charge donor, though …

Comparison Of Non-Lethal Versus Lethal Control Methods For Red-Tailed Hawks And Other Bird Species At The Waste Management Outer Loop Recycling And Disposal Facility, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa, Russell P. Defusco, Kevin M. Mieczkowski, C. Jared Quillen Aug 2008

Comparison Of Non-Lethal Versus Lethal Control Methods For Red-Tailed Hawks And Other Bird Species At The Waste Management Outer Loop Recycling And Disposal Facility, Louisville, Kentucky, Usa, Russell P. Defusco, Kevin M. Mieczkowski, C. Jared Quillen

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

Removal of red-tailed hawks and other raptors by trapping and relocating, euthanasia, or other techniques is often used by airport managers to address hazardous birds, however many professionals disagree about the effectiveness of this approach. Relocating birds has drawbacks due to expense, site fidelity leading to returning birds, and other issues. Lethal control methods suffer from permitting requirements and may lead to adverse public opinion. Removing birds by relocation or lethal means often results in other individuals, including inexperienced juveniles, attempting to fill vacated territories, with smaller territories, higher densities, and birds that may be less adept at avoiding aircraft …

“Buzzard Be-Gone”: Suspending Vulture Effigies From Roost Structures To Reduce The Possibility Of A Bird Strike, Steve Ball Aug 2008

“Buzzard Be-Gone”: Suspending Vulture Effigies From Roost Structures To Reduce The Possibility Of A Bird Strike, Steve Ball

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) has a wingspan of 68–72 inches and an average weight of 3.1 pounds. It poses a severe hazard to aircraft at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. Feedback from pilots indicated these large birds were soaring within the aerodrome. This coupled with a vulture strike to a C- 130J aircraft, induced Wildlife Services to bolster “traditional” efforts of vulture dispersal. Dispersal techniques involving pyrotechnics and lethal removal are effective, but migrant birds establish a “home roost” each autumn through spring on local tower structures. Our vultures like to roost on two 150 foot …

Edwards Air Force Base Migratory Bird Report For The Replace Main Base Runway Project, Amber Hoehn Aug 2008

Edwards Air Force Base Migratory Bird Report For The Replace Main Base Runway Project, Amber Hoehn

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

In 2006, the United States Air Force, in cooperation with several government agencies, began preparing for the Replace Main Base Runway Project at Edwards Air Force Base. The project would involve construction of a fully functional new runway, located near the main runway area, in desert scrub (Atriplex sp.) habitat. Bird air strike incidents are normally low at Edwards AFB; desert scrub habitat around the airfield area minimizes the attraction of migratory birds, including horned larks (Eremophila alpestris), which are the primary bird air strike hazard. In order to minimize attraction and nesting of migratory birds, as …

Vulture Management At Avon Park Air Force Range, Florida, John S. Humphrey, Michael L. Avery, Michael Milleson, Troy Hershberger

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

Coincident with rising vulture populations have been reports of increased aircraft safety issues. There have been over 700 vulture strikes with US Air Force aircraft at costs in excess of $150 million. The Avon Park Air Force Range (APAFR) harbors a thriving vulture population which often creates dangerous situations for pilots on low-level training missions. In 2005-2006, we conducted research to 1) disperse vultures from roosts on and near the APAFR; 2) assess vulture use of the ranges before and after roost dispersal; and 3) evaluate vulture use of the surrounding area. Baseline counts of vultures leaving a large nearby …

Airport Wildlife Management Training – Programs And Best Training Practices Now And For The Future, John Ostrom Aug 2008

Airport Wildlife Management Training – Programs And Best Training Practices Now And For The Future, John Ostrom

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

With the June 2006 release of FAA Advisory Circular 150-5200-36 Qualifications for Wildlife Biologists, a minimum wildlife hazard management curriculum was established for the initial and recurrent training of airport personnel involved in implementing a FAA approved Wildlife Hazard Management Plan. This presentation will show some of the existing programs and “best training” practices from airports across the country along with some future programs. Information offered in this presentation will provide airports and personnel involved in training, ideas on how to better develop and deliver their wildlife management training programs.

Test Of An Alternative Rodent Control Method: Chf Fertilizer/Small Mammal Repellant, Randy J. Outward, Rebecca Mihalco, Thomas W. Seamans Aug 2008

Test Of An Alternative Rodent Control Method: Chf Fertilizer/Small Mammal Repellant, Randy J. Outward, Rebecca Mihalco, Thomas W. Seamans

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

Small mammals, primarily rodents, are an indirect threat to aviation safety because they are the prey base for numerous species of raptors. An abundant rodent population at an airport can attract and sustain a significant number of hazardous raptors in the airport vicinity. The use of chemical rodenticides has been shown to reduce rodent populations but may not be practical because of environmental concerns, thus alternative methods are needed. A test of a small mammal repellant, CHF, was conducted at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, OH. CHF, manufactured by Coolworks BV, is a pelleted, composted 1:1 mixture of mink/fox manure …

As The Worm Turns: Investigations Into Earthworm Control On Airports, Thomas W. Seamans, Glen E. Bernhardt, David Steyer

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 10th (2008)

Earthworms, though generally considered beneficial for soil conditioning, can become a hazard at airports. When found in large numbers on runways or taxiways after heavy rainfall, they create slippery conditions for aircraft rolling over them. Additionally, earthworms attract birds, especially gulls, thereby increasing the risk of bird strikes to aircraft that are landing or taking off. For example, during a 35-minute period on 3 September 2004 at Calgary International Airport (YYC), a B737 of Westjet and an A319 of Air Canada aborted takeoffs after multiple strikes with gulls attracted to the runways to feed on earthworms. The B737 had strikes …
