Singularities Of Hinge Structures, Ciprian Borcea, Ileana Streinu Dec 2008

Singularities Of Hinge Structures, Ciprian Borcea, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Motivated by the hinge structure present in protein chains and other molecular conformations, we study the singularities of certain maps associated to body-and-hinge and panel-and-hinge chains. These are sequentially articulated systems where two consecutive rigid pieces are connected by a hinge, that is, a codimension two axis. The singularities, or critical points, correspond to a dimensional drop in the linear span of the axes, regarded as points on a Grassmann variety in its Pl¨ucker embedding. These results are valid in arbitrary dimension. The three dimensional case is also relevant in robotics.

Optimal Color Model For Information Hidingin Color Images, Ali Kadhim Mousa, Zainab Hussain Kadhim

Baghdad Science Journal

In present work the effort has been put in finding the most suitable color model for the application of information hiding in color images. We test the most commonly used color models; RGB, YIQ, YUV, YCbCr1 and YCbCr2. The same procedures of embedding, detection and evaluation were applied to find which color model is most appropriate for information hiding. The new in this work, we take into consideration the value of errors that generated during transformations among color models. The results show YUV and YIQ color models are the best for information hiding in color images.

Modeling Of Mixing Time For Bioreactors With Self-Inducing Impellers, Alaa K. M. Dec 2008

Modeling Of Mixing Time For Bioreactors With Self-Inducing Impellers, Alaa K. M.

Baghdad Science Journal

the mixing time is one of the most useful criterions for characterization of the broths mixing intensity and for scaling up of biosynthesis processes. this parameter value depends mainly on the presence of biomass in the broths, mixing system characteristics and operating conditions. For quantifying the influence of these factors on mixing efficiency, this study was carried out for simulated fermentation aerated broths consisted of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium salt (CMCNa) taking into account the broth's viscosity, rotation speed (rpm) and the stirrer geometry. The experimental results were used in obtaining a correlation to calculate the mixing time for Re <5000, domain of flow regime for which only few data are available from literature. t_m=1.6x10^3xμ^0.43_a/N^1.13X L^0.53 This model offer a good concordance with the experimental results, the average deviation being of 6.6% for CMCNa solutions and can be used for fermentation scaling up.

Investigation Of Heterogeneity Of Fsw Inconel 718 Coupled With Welding Thermal Cycle, Dong Fang Huang Dec 2008

Investigation Of Heterogeneity Of Fsw Inconel 718 Coupled With Welding Thermal Cycle, Dong Fang Huang

Theses and Dissertations

In order to develop a better understanding of the property, microstructure evolution and thermal history of FSW Inconel 718's, the strain, strain rate and thermal cycles need to be determined. In order to estimate the strain field of a deformed body, a displacement function needs to be determined. A 3D deformation model was developed to determine the displacement coefficients. A rectangular box created in this model deforms following a linear displacement function. Three orthogonal planes cut this deformed box, which leads to three deformed planes. The shape parameters (L, H, θ¹ and θ²) on the three orthogonal planes can be …

Electrothermal Imaging In One And Two Dimensions, Michael Janus, David Kibbling Dec 2008

Electrothermal Imaging In One And Two Dimensions, Michael Janus, David Kibbling

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Developing methods for the nondestructive testing of materials is an important area of research for industry. Situations often arise in which the integrity of an object is questioned, but testing it is very difficult. For example, a support bar may be embedded in a larger structure so that testing the bar’s integrity directly would require the impractical task of breaking down the larger structure. Instead, the ends of the bar might be accessible without dismantling the enclosing structure. The goal of nondestructive testing is to use methods that require taking measurements at the ends of the bar alone to give …

Determining The Shape Of A Resistor Grid, Esther Chiew, Vincent Selhorst-Jones Dec 2008

Determining The Shape Of A Resistor Grid, Esther Chiew, Vincent Selhorst-Jones

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Impedance imaging has received a lot of attention in the past two decades, as a means for non-destructively imaging the interior of a conductive object. One injects a known electrical current pattern into an object at the exterior boundary, then measures the induced potential (voltage) on some portion of the boundary. The goal is to recover information about the interior conductivity of the object, which (we hope) influences the voltages we measure. Of course one can also use multiple input currents and measured voltages. A variation on this problem is that of "boundary identification," in which some portion of the …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Structural Analogs Of Escherichia Coli Lipid A For Application Towards Cd14-Targeting Glycotherapeutics, Aileen Fay Galos Bongat Dec 2008

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Structural Analogs Of Escherichia Coli Lipid A For Application Towards Cd14-Targeting Glycotherapeutics, Aileen Fay Galos Bongat

Dissertations

Lipid A is a glucosamine-based phospholipid that anchors carbohydrate molecules to the outer membrane of most Gram-negative bacteria. During severe infection, this amphiphilic macromolecule invoke a strong and acute pro-inflammatory response that leads to sepsis and ultimately to septic shock, organ failure and death. Thus, following the convention that the best antidote is often a derivative of the parent agonistic molecule, researchers have actively pursued the idea of creating an analog of Lipid A that can block the cellular receptor for this molecule and thereby arrest the cascade of events that lead to sepsis. Consequently, we became interested in creating …

The Relationship Between The Maturity Level Of Professional Learning Communities (Plcs) And Student Achievement, Eric Brett Arbetter

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between schools' maturity as professional learning communities (PLCs) and student achievement in mathematics and communication arts. Teachers from all 333 public elementary schools in Missouri serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade were invited to participate by completing Hord's School Professional Staff as Learning Community Questionnaire. Each question was directly related to one of Hord's five critical dimensions of PLCs: "...supportive and shared leadership; a shared vision and values; collective learning and application of learning; shared personal practice; and supportive conditions" (Hord, 1997a, p. 6, passim). …

The Impact Of A Character Education Based Interactive Discipline Program On At-Risk Student Behavior In An Alternative School, Michael G. Hylen Dec 2008

The Impact Of A Character Education Based Interactive Discipline Program On At-Risk Student Behavior In An Alternative School, Michael G. Hylen

Dissertations

Student problem behavior is incompatible with academic achievement and positive interpersonal relationships. It has become necessary for schools to develop codes of conduct to address inappropriate student behavior. But, current school disciplinary policies are ineffective instruments for effecting positive change in student problem behavior (Goodman, 2006). In response to this problem, public school districts are developing a wide variety of approaches to dealing with the needs of problem behavior students. One approach has been the development of alternative high school programs - school district initiatives specifically designed to meet the needs of students lacking success in the traditional high school …

Performance Analysis Of A Light Weight Packet Scanner, Paras Gandhi

Theses and Dissertations

The growth of networks around the world has also given rise to threats like viruses and Trojans. This rise in threats has resulted in counter measures for these threats. These counter measures are in the form of applications called firewalls or IDS. The incorporation of these applications in the network results in some delay in communications. The aim of the experiment in this thesis is to measure the delay introduced by such a firewall in the best case and compare it with the communication done on a network without such an application. These experiments are done using a special miniature …

Using Geoscience Education Graduate Students To Help Faculty Transform Teaching Practice, Teagan L. Tomlin Dec 2008

Using Geoscience Education Graduate Students To Help Faculty Transform Teaching Practice, Teagan L. Tomlin

Theses and Dissertations

Universities make claims about student learning that graduates don't often achieve and are under pressure to show improvement in teaching and learning in their undergraduate programs. This has been the constant focus of university-level professional development programs, but most teachers are still not using the most effective teaching methods. Individual departments need to find ways to help their instructors overcome three main challenges associated with adopting more effective student-centered teaching methods. No matter what strategy is adopted, instructors need considerable support to 1) change their beliefs about what constitutes effective teaching and learning, 2) learn to effectively implement new strategies, …

Recursive Dispersion Relations In One-Dimensional Periodic Elastic Media, Ani P. Velo, George A. Gazonas, Erwin Bruder, Nancy Rodriguez

Mathematics: Faculty Scholarship

A frequency bandgap is a range of wave frequencies that are prohibited from passing through a medium. The dispersion relation, which links the frequency to the wave number, enables us to illustrate the bandgaps. In [E. H. Lee, “A survey of variational methods for elastic wave propagation analysis in composites with periodic structures,” in Dynamics of Composite Materials, E. H. Lee, ed., ASME, New York, 1972, pp. 122–138] and [E. H. Lee and W. H. Yang, SIAM J. Appl. Math., 25 (1973), pp. 492–499] the dispersion relation was studied theoretically for the one-dimensional periodic structure made of two materials …
