Range Precision Of Ladar Systems, Steven E. Johnson Sep 2008

Range Precision Of Ladar Systems, Steven E. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A key application of Laser Detection and Ranging (LADAR) systems is measurement of range to a target. Many modern LADAR systems are capable of transmitting laser pulses that are less than a few nanoseconds in duration. These short-duration pulses provide excellent range precision. However, randomness in the detected laser signals places limits on the precision. The goal of this dissertation is to quantify the range precision limits of LADAR systems. The randomness in the time between photon arrivals, which is called shot noise, is discussed in depth. System-dependent noise sources such as dark current and detector gain variation are considered. …

A Confidence Paradigm For Classification Systems, Nathan J. Leap Sep 2008

A Confidence Paradigm For Classification Systems, Nathan J. Leap

Theses and Dissertations

There is no universally accepted methodology to determine how much confidence one should have in a classifier output. This research proposes a framework to determine the level of confidence in an indication from a classifier system where the output is or can be transformed into a posterior probability estimate. This is a theoretical framework that attempts to unite the viewpoints of the classification system developer (or engineer) and the classification system user (or war-fighter). The paradigm is based on the assumptions that the system confidence acts like, or can be modeled as a value and that indication confidence can be …

The Roc Curves Of Fused Independent Classification Systems, Michael B. Walsh Sep 2008

The Roc Curves Of Fused Independent Classification Systems, Michael B. Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

The need for optimal target detection arises in many different fields. Due to the complexity of many targets, it is thought that the combination of multiple classification systems, which can be tuned to several individual target attributes or features, might lead to more optimal target detection performance. The ROC curves of fused independent two-label classification systems may be generated by the mathematical combination of their ROC curves to achieve optimal classifier performance without the need to test every Boolean combination. The monotonic combination of two-label independent classification systems which assign labels to the same target types results in a lattice …

Combat Identification Using Multiple Tuav Swarm, Younin Kang Sep 2008

Combat Identification Using Multiple Tuav Swarm, Younin Kang

Theses and Dissertations

In modern warfare, Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (TUAVs) are rapidly taking on a leading role in traditional and non-traditional ISR, to include Automatic Target Recognition (ATR). However, additional advancements in processors and sensors on TUAVs are still needed before they can be widely employed as a primary source for positive identification in the Combat Identification (CID) process. Cost is a driving factor for operating an ATR system using multiple TUAVs. The cost of high quality sensors appropriate for a single TUAV can be significantly higher than less sophisticated sensors suitable for deployment on a group, or swarm, of coordinated TUAVs. …

Electron Density And Electron Neutral Collision Frequency In The Ionosphere Using Plasma Impedance Probe Measurement, E. Spencer, S. Patra, T. Andriyas, C. Swenson, J. Ward, A. Barjatya Sep 2008

Electron Density And Electron Neutral Collision Frequency In The Ionosphere Using Plasma Impedance Probe Measurement, E. Spencer, S. Patra, T. Andriyas, C. Swenson, J. Ward, A. Barjatya

Publications

Swept Impedance Probe measurements in a sporadic E layer observed during the Sudden Atomic Layer (SAL) sounding rocket mission are analyzed to obtain absolute electron densities and electron neutral collision frequencies accurately. Three sets of upleg and downleg impedance data are selected for the analysis. Initial estimates of the plasma parameters are obtained through a least mean square fit of the measured impedance data against the analytical impedance formula ZB(f ) of Balmain (1969). These initial parameters are used as a starting point to drive a finite difference computational model of an antenna immersed in a plasma called PF-FDTD. The …

A Better Nondimensionalization Scheme For Slender Laminar Flows: The Laplacian Operator Scaling Method, Mark M. Weislogel, Yongkang Chen, D. Bolleddula Sep 2008

A Better Nondimensionalization Scheme For Slender Laminar Flows: The Laplacian Operator Scaling Method, Mark M. Weislogel, Yongkang Chen, D. Bolleddula

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A scaling of the two-dimensional Laplacian operator is demonstrated for certain solutions (at least) to Poisson’s equation. It succeeds by treating the operator as a single geometric scale entity. The belated and rather subtle method provides an efficient assessment of the geometrical dependence of the problem and is preferred when practicable to the hydraulic diameter or term-by-term scaling for slender fully developed laminar flows. The improved accuracy further reduces the reliance of problems on widely varying numerical data or cumbersome theoretical forms and improves the prospects of exact or approximate theoretical analysis. Simple example problems are briefly described that demonstrate …

Environmental Limits On The Nonresonant Cosmic-Ray Current-Driven Instability, Brian Reville, John Kirk, Peter Duffy, Stephen O'Sullivan Sep 2008

Environmental Limits On The Nonresonant Cosmic-Ray Current-Driven Instability, Brian Reville, John Kirk, Peter Duffy, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

We investigate the so-called nonresonant cosmic-ray streaming instability, first discussed by Bell (2004). The extent to which thermal damping and ion-neutral collisions reduce the growth of this instability is calculated. Limits on the growth of the nonresonant mode in SN1006 and RX J1713.7-3946 are presented.

Cluster Analysis Of Simulated Gravitationalwave Triggers Using S-Means And Constrained Validation Clustering, Lappoon R. Tang, Hansheng Lei, Soma Mukherjee, Soumya Mohanty Sep 2008

Cluster Analysis Of Simulated Gravitationalwave Triggers Using S-Means And Constrained Validation Clustering, Lappoon R. Tang, Hansheng Lei, Soma Mukherjee, Soumya Mohanty

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The fifth Science run of LIGO (S5) has been concluded recently. The data collected over two years of the run calls for a thorough analysis of the glitches seen in the gravitational wave channels, as well as in the auxiliary and environmental channels. The study presents two new techniques for cluster analysis of gravitational wave burst triggers. Traditional approaches to clustering treats the problem as an optimization problem in an “open” search space of clustering models. However, this can lead to problems with producing models that over-fit or under-fit the data as the search is stuck on local minima. The …

S-Means: Similarity Driven Clustering And Its Application In Gravitational-Wave Astronomy Data Mining, Hansheng Lei, Lappoon R. Tang, Juan R. Iglesias, Soma Mukherjee, Soumya Mohanty

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Clustering is to classify unlabeled data into groups. It has been well researched for decades in many disciplines. Clustering in massive amount of astronomical data generated by multi-sensor networks has become an emerging new challenge; assumptions in many existing clustering algorithms are often violated in these domains. For example, K means implicitly assumes that underlying distribution of data is Gaussian. Such an assumption is not necessarily observed in astronomical data. Another problem is the determination of K, which is hard to decide when prior knowledge is lacking. While there has been work done on discovering the proper value for K …

Correlation Of Vibrational Intensity With Fluorescence Lifetimes In Π Conjugated Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne Sep 2008

Correlation Of Vibrational Intensity With Fluorescence Lifetimes In Π Conjugated Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A series of novel pi (p) conjugated polymers, originating from the archetypical Polyphenylene vinylene, in which the phenyl units are successively replaced by the larger naphthyl and anthryl acene units, were previously found to have a well-defined relationship between their relative fluorescence yields and their vibrational characteristics, as determined by Raman spectroscopy. In this study the Strickler–Berg equation is used to probe the influence of continual substitution of higher order acene units into the conjugated backbone in terms of the variation of the radiative and non-radiative rates. The deconvolution of the radiative and non-radiative rates enables the correlation of the …

Absolute Cross Sections For The Ionization-Excitation Of Helium By Electron Impact, S. Bellm, J. Lower, E. Weigold, I. Bray, D. V. Fursa, K. Bartschat, Don H. Madison, Allison L. Harris Sep 2008

Absolute Cross Sections For The Ionization-Excitation Of Helium By Electron Impact, S. Bellm, J. Lower, E. Weigold, I. Bray, D. V. Fursa, K. Bartschat, Don H. Madison, Allison L. Harris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a recent publication we presented detailed experimental and theoretical results for the electron-impact-induced ionization of ground-state helium atoms. The purpose of that work was to refine theoretical approaches and provide further insight into the Coulomb four-body problem. Cross section ratios were presented for transitions leading to excited states, relative to those leading to the ground state, of the helium ion. We now build on that study by presenting individual relative triple-differential ionization cross sections (TDCSs) for an additional body of experimental data measured at lower values of scattered-electron energies. This has been facilitated through the development of new electron-gun …

The Impact Of School Climate On School Outcomes, J. Eric Tubbs, Mary Garner Sep 2008

The Impact Of School Climate On School Outcomes, J. Eric Tubbs, Mary Garner

Faculty Articles

The purpose of this article is to provide insight into an elementary school whose climate issues appear to plague and impact it's performance as measured by it's Annually Yearly Progress (AYP). The Northwest Georgia elementary school is located in a rural school system approximately 50 miles northwest of Atlanta, Georgia. A review of the literature suggests school climate can affect many areas and people within schools. It further suggests that positive interpersonal relationships and optimal learning opportunities in all demographic environments can increase school achievement levels and reduce maladaptive behaviors (McEvoy & Welker, 2000). Providing a positive and supportive work …

Elucidating The Degree Of Selectivity For Nlo Surrogate Attachment To Model Compounds And A Co-Polyimide Using The Mitsunobu Reaction, Timothy E. Woods Sep 2008

Elucidating The Degree Of Selectivity For Nlo Surrogate Attachment To Model Compounds And A Co-Polyimide Using The Mitsunobu Reaction, Timothy E. Woods

Theses

The goals of this research are: to elucidate the degree of selectivity shown using the Mitsunobu reaction for pendent attachment to phenol and carboxylic acid functional groups, and to make progress towards the synthesis of a novel, UV-Crosslinkable, Mellitic Acid Dianhydride (MADA)-containing, low color, nonlinear optical (NLO) pendent co-polyimide (co-PI). Two of the three co-PI components lower the hydrophilicity and color of the product polymer by incorporating C-F bonds between their aromatic rings: the diamine, 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (Bis-AP-AF), and the dianhydride, 4,4’-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA). MADA was synthesized using a previously established procedure, and its purity was verified by a 5.9% weight …

Impacts Of Land Use, Anthropogenic Disturbance, And Harvesting On An African Medicinal Liana, Lauren Mcgeoch, Ian Gordon, Johanna Schmitt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

African medicinal plant species are increasingly threatened by overexploitation and habitat loss, but little is known about the conservation status and ecology of many medicinal species. Mondia whitei (Apocynaceae, formerly Asclepiadaceae), a medicinal liana found in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been subject to intensive harvesting and habitat loss. We surveyed M. whitei in Kakamega Forest, the largest of three remnant Kenyan forests known to contain the species. In 174 100 m2 plots, we quantified the status of M. whitei and investigated its relationships with land use, disturbance and harvesting. With average adult densities of 101 plants/ha, M. whitei is not locally …

An Evaluation Of Energy Consumption And Emissions From Intermodal Freight Operations On The Eastern Seaboard: A Gis Network Analysis Approach, Aaron Falzarano Sep 2008

An Evaluation Of Energy Consumption And Emissions From Intermodal Freight Operations On The Eastern Seaboard: A Gis Network Analysis Approach, Aaron Falzarano

Theses

As global trade continues to increase, the energy and environmental impacts of freight movement in the US have become more of a concern. As such, the freight transport system needs to consider opportunities to meet customer objectives, while also meeting social goals. In the US there has been legislation enacted to address the growing impact that freight movement has on the environment, but there are limited tools to assist in the implementation of those polices. This research sets forth a process for creating a geospatial intermodal freight transportation (GIFT) model within ArcGIS that can be used to analyze freight movement …

Use Of Fluorinated Functionality In Enzyme Inhibitor Development: Mechanistic And Analytical Advantages, David B. Berkowitz, Kannan R. Karukurichi, Roberto De La Salud-Bea, David L. Nelson, Christopher D. Mccune Sep 2008

Use Of Fluorinated Functionality In Enzyme Inhibitor Development: Mechanistic And Analytical Advantages, David B. Berkowitz, Kannan R. Karukurichi, Roberto De La Salud-Bea, David L. Nelson, Christopher D. Mccune

David Berkowitz Publications

On the one hand, owing to its electronegativity, relatively small size, and notable leaving group ability from anionic intermediates, fluorine offers unique opportunities for mechanism-based enzyme inhibitor design. On the other, the “bio-orthogonal” and NMR-active 19-fluorine nucleus allows the bioorganic chemist to follow the mechanistic fate of fluorinated substrate analogues or inhibitors as they are enzymatically processed. This article takes an overview of the field, highlighting key developments along these lines. It begins by highlighting new screening methodologies for drug discovery that involve appropriate tagging of either substrate or the target protein itself with 19Fmarkers, that then report back …

Interface Effects In Spin-Polarized Metal/Insulator Layered Structures, Julian P. Velev, Peter A. Dowben, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Stephen J. Jenkins, A. N. Caruso

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Recent advances in thin-film deposition techniques, such as molecular beam epitaxy and pulsed laser deposition, have allowed for the manufacture of heterostructures with nearly atomically abrupt interfaces. Although the bulk properties of the individual heterostructure components may be well-known, often the heterostructures exhibit novel and sometimes unexpected properties due to interface effects. At heterostructure interfaces, lattice structure, stoichiometry, interface electronic structure (bonding, interface states, etc.), and symmetry all conspire to produce behavior different from the bulk constituents. This review discusses why knowledge of the electronic structure and composition at the interfaces is pivotal to the understanding of the properties of …

Winterkill And Biomass Of The Painted Turtle In A South Dakota Wetland, Steven G. Platt, Zannita Fast Horse, Warren Cross, Sylvio Mannel, Thomas R. Rainwater Sep 2008

Winterkill And Biomass Of The Painted Turtle In A South Dakota Wetland, Steven G. Platt, Zannita Fast Horse, Warren Cross, Sylvio Mannel, Thomas R. Rainwater

The Prairie Naturalist

Winterkill occurs when drought conditions expose hibernating turtles to desiccation and lethaly cold temperatures. Winterkill is thought to represent a major source of mortality in northern populations of the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta), but few field observations are available. We herein reported on catastrophic winterkill among western painted turtle (C. pieta bellii) at Limestone Butte Lake (LBL) in western South Dakota during the winter of 2003-2004. Additionally, we used the carcasses of winterkilled turtles (n = 86) to estimate the standing crop biomass of the painted turtle at LBL (0.6 kg/ha). This was the only estimate …

Threefold Flops Via Matrix Factorization, Carina Curto, David R. Morrison Sep 2008

Threefold Flops Via Matrix Factorization, Carina Curto, David R. Morrison

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The structure of birational maps between algebraic varieties becomes increasingly complicated as the dimension of the varieties increases. There is no birational geometry to speak of in dimension one: if two complete algebraic curves are birationally isomorphic then they are biregularly isomorphic. In dimension two we encounter the phenomenon of the blowup of a point, and every birational isomorphism can be factored into a sequence of blowups and blowdowns. In dimension three, however, we first encounter birational maps which are biregular outside of a subvariety of codimension two (called the center of the birational map). When the center has a …

Loess Record Of The Pleistocene–Holocene Transition On The Northern And Central Great Plains, Usa, Joseph A. Mason, Xiaodong Miao, P.R. Hanson, William C. Johnson, Peter M. Jacobs, Ronald J. Goble

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Various lines of evidence support conflicting interpretations of the timing, abruptness, and nature of climate change in the Great Plains during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. Loess deposits and paleosols on both the central and northern Great Plains provide a valuable record that can help address these issues. A synthesis of new and previously reported optical and radiocarbon ages indicates that the Brady Soil, which marks the boundary between late Pleistocene Peoria Loess and Holocene Bignell Loess, began forming after a reduction in the rate of Peoria Loess accumulation that most likely occurred between 13.5 and 15 cal ka. Brady Soil formation …

Empirical Study Of A Hybrid Algorithm Based On Clonal Selection And Small Population Based Pso., Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a hybrid algorithm, based on clonal selection algorithm (CSA) and small population based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) is introduced. The performance of this new algorithm (CS2P2SO) is observed for four well known benchmark functions. The SPPSO is a variant of conventional PSO (CPSO), introduced by the second author of this paper, where a very small number of initial particles are used and after a few iterations, the best particle is kept and the rest are replaced by the same number of regenerated particles. On the other hand, CSA belongs to the family of artificial immune system (AIS). …
