Emissions Scenarios In The Face Of Fossil-Fuel Peaking, Robert J. Brecha
Emissions Scenarios In The Face Of Fossil-Fuel Peaking, Robert J. Brecha
Physics Faculty Publications
Emissions scenarios used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are based on detailed energy system models in which demographics, technology and economics are used to generate projections of future world energy consumption, and therefore, of greenhouse gas emissions. We propose in this paper that it is useful to look at a qualitative model of the energy system, backed by data from short- and medium-term trends, to gain a sense of carbon emission bounds. Here we look at what may be considered a lower bound for 21st century emissions given two assumptions: first, that extractable fossil-fuel resources follow the …

The Value Of Assessing Weights In Multi-Criteria Portfolio Decision Analysis, Jeffrey Keisler
The Value Of Assessing Weights In Multi-Criteria Portfolio Decision Analysis, Jeffrey Keisler
Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series
Analytic efforts in support of portfolio decisions can be applied with varying levels of intensity. To gain insight about how to match the effort to the situation, we simulate a portfolio of potential projects and compare portfolio performance under a range of analytic strategies. Each project is scored with respect to several attributes in a linear additive value model. Projects are ranked in order of value per unit cost and funded until the budget is exhausted. Assuming these weights and scores are correct, and the funding decisions made this way are optimal, this process is a gold standard against which …

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 7. Rearrangement Of Trans-Stilbene Oxide With Bismuth Trifluoromethanesulfonate And Other Metal Triflates, Ram Mohan, James Christensen, Matthew Huddle, Jamie Rogers, Herbie Yung
Scholarship
A microscale discovery-oriented experiment illustrating the rearrangement of trans-stilbene oxide using non-corrosive metal triflates as catalysts has been developed. The use of CDCl3 as the reaction solvent eliminates the need for any workup and avoids the use of highly toxic boron trifluoride etherate as a catalyst and additional reaction solvent.

Cancellation Of Spurious Arrivals In Green’S Function Extraction, Kasper Van Wijk
Cancellation Of Spurious Arrivals In Green’S Function Extraction, Kasper Van Wijk
CGISS Publications and Presentations
The extraction of the Green's function by cross correlation of waves recorded at two receivers nowadays finds much application. We show that for an arbitrary small scatterer, the cross terms of scattered waves give an unphysical wave with an arrival time that is independent of the source position. This constitutes an apparent inconsistency because theory predicts that such spurious arrivals do not arise, after integration over a complete source aperture. This puzzling inconsistency can be resolved for an arbitrary scatterer by integrating the contribution of all sources in the stationary phase approximation to show that the stationary phase contributions to …

Search For Scalar Leptoquarks And T-Odd Quarks In The Acoplanar Jet Topology Using 2.5 Fb−1 Of Pp Collision Data At √S = 1.96 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, Dø Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
A search for new physics in the acoplanar jet topology has been performed in 2.5 fb−1 of data from pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV, recorded by the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The numbers of events with exactly two acoplanar jets and missing transverse energy are in good agreement with the Standard Model expectations. The result of this search has been used to set a lower mass limit of 205 GeV at the 95% C.L. on the mass of a scalar leptoquark when this particle decays exclusively into a quark and a neutrino. In the …

Playing For His Side: Kipling’S ‘Regulus,’ Corporal Punishment, And Classical Education, Emily A. Mcdermott
Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series
Rudyard Kipling’s short story, “Regulus,” revolves around the flogging of a student who has let loose a mouse in the drawing classroom of a turn-of-the-century British public school. The first part of the story is devoted to a fifth-form Latin class’s line-by-line explication of Horace’s fifth Roman ode, in which the story’s title character is presented as a paradigm of manly virtue; the remainder is given over to narration of the mouse-miscreant’s progress toward punishment, in thematic counterpoint to the Regulus exemplum. Within that idiosyncratic framework, the story tackles as ambitious a topic as the purposes of education, with particular …

A Method For Processing Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Velocity Data From Towed, Undulating Vehicles, David A. Jay, Jiayi Pan
A Method For Processing Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Velocity Data From Towed, Undulating Vehicles, David A. Jay, Jiayi Pan
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The utility of the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) for sampling small time and space scales of coastal environments can be enhanced by mounting a high-frequency (1200 kHz) ADCP on an oscillating towed body. This approach requires both an external reference to convert the measured shears to velocities in the earth coordinates and a method to determine the towed body velocities. During the River Influence on the Shelf Ecosystems (RISE) project cruise, a high-frequency (1200 kHz) and narrowbeam ADCP with mode 12 sampling was mounted on a TRIAXUS oscillating towfish, which steers a 3D path behind the ship. This deployment …

The Inverse Ocean Modeling (IOM) System is a modular system for constructing and running weak-constraint four-dimensional variational data assimilation (W4DVAR) for any linear or nonlinear functionally smooth dynamical model and observing array. The IOM has been applied to four ocean models with widely varying characteristics. The Primitive Equations Z-coordinate-Harmonic Analysis of Tides (PEZ-HAT) and the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) are three-dimensional, primitive equations models while the Advanced Circulation model in 2D (ADCIRC-2D) and Spectral Element Ocean Model in 2D (SEOM-2D) are shallow-water models belonging to the general finite-element family. These models, in conjunction with the IOM, have been used …

Hypertension-Induced Renal Fibrosis And Spironolactone Response Vary By Rat Strain And Mineralocorticoid Receptor Gene Expression, Larisa H. Cavallari, Lucy A. Fashingbauer, Joseph R. Camp, Stephen T. King, David L. Geenen
Peer Reviewed Articles
Introduction. Aldosterone promotes renal fibrosis via the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), thus contributing to hypertension-induced nephropathy. We investigated whether MR gene expression influences renal fibrosis and MR antagonist response in a two-kidney, one-clip hypertensive rat model.
Materials and methods. Brown Norway (BN), Lewis, and ACI rats were randomised to spironolactone 20 mg/kg/day or water by gavage, starting four weeks after left renal artery clipping. Blood pressure was measured bi-weekly by tail cuff. After eight weeks of treatment, right kidneys were removed and examined for fibrosis and gene expression. Rats of each strain undergoing no intervention served as controls.

On The Determination Of The Elastic Properties Of Geopolymeric Materials Using Non-Destructive Ultrasonic Techniques, Joseph L. Lawson
On The Determination Of The Elastic Properties Of Geopolymeric Materials Using Non-Destructive Ultrasonic Techniques, Joseph L. Lawson
Theses
Current methods of determining the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio for geopolymeric materials are limited by the destructive nature of compressive strength and bending testing analysis techniques. Since these tests are not repeatable, there is no means of evaluating whether measured properties are a result of the actual materials or the effect of possible mechanical defects. This study applies a relationship between the speed of sound through a material and its elastic properties to determine the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of geopolymeric samples. In addition to these elastic properties, the density, percent pore volume, average pore diameter and standard …

The Internet offers a plethora of freely available information for possible use in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) operations. However, along with this information come challenges in finding relevant information and overcoming information overload. This paper presents the results of an ongoing research in a Tailored Information Delivery Services (TIDS) system that aids users in retrieving relevant information through various open intelligence sources. The TIDS provides a semantics-based query constructor that operates in a “What You Get is What You Need (WYGIWYNTM)” fashion and builds ontology based information tagging, theme extractor, and contextual model.

In lieu of an abstract, here is the article's first paragraph:
In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix to illustrate the nature of evidence and how it shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician, I usually field questions related to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object?

Dollars For Sense: Assessing Achievement Gaps In Arkansas In The Context Of Substantial Funding Increases, Joshua H. Barnett, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter
Arkansas Education Reports
Over the last half century, more than forty states across the nation have experienced school finance lawsuits as a consequence of perceived and real funding gaps between rich and poor districts (Rebell, 2001). Arkansas is one such state, with a long history of school funding battles in the courts. The legal challenges began in 1983, when the Arkansas Supreme Court initially found the state's school funding system unconstitutional under the equal protection clause of the state constitution .

Swarm Intelligence And Evolutionary Approaches For Reactive Power And Voltage Control, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, G. Krost, G. A. Bakare, Lisa L. Grant
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a comparison of swarm intelligence and evolutionary techniques based approaches for minimization of system losses and improvement of voltage profiles in a power network. Efficient distribution of reactive power in an electric network can be achieved by adjusting the excitation on generators, the on-load tap changer positions of transformers, and proper switching of discrete portions of inductors or capacitors. This is a mixed integer non-linear optimization problem where metaheuristics techniques have proven suitable for providing optimal solutions. Four algorithms explored in this paper include differential evolution (DE), particle swarm optimization (PSO), a hybrid combination of DE and …
