A Study Of The Irradiance-And-Temperature-Dependence Of Mid-Wave-Infrared (Mwir)Absorption In Indium Antimonide (Insb), John M. Callahan Sep 2008

A Study Of The Irradiance-And-Temperature-Dependence Of Mid-Wave-Infrared (Mwir)Absorption In Indium Antimonide (Insb), John M. Callahan

Theses and Dissertations

This work entails further investigation of the absorption of photons in indium antimonide (InSb). Previously work at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) attributed laser blooming effects in InSb focal plane arrays (FPA’s) to the Burstein-Moss effect. The contributing effect is from a decrease in the absorption of the InSb material, such that the transmitted optical energy scatters off the integrated circuitry beneath the InSb thin film back into the optical system. To evaluate this, irradiance-dependent laser-absorption experiments were performed on thinned, InSb wafers prior to their FPA fabrication. The samples were illuminated with a focused CO2 laser at …

Measurements Of The Vapor Pressure Of Supercooled Water Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Will Cantrell, Eli Ochshorn, Alexander Kostinski, Keith Bozin Sep 2008

Measurements Of The Vapor Pressure Of Supercooled Water Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Will Cantrell, Eli Ochshorn, Alexander Kostinski, Keith Bozin

Department of Physics Publications

Measurements are presented of the vapor pressure of supercooled water utilizing infrared spectroscopy, which enables unambiguous verification that the authors’ data correspond to the vapor pressure of liquid water, not a mixture of liquid water and ice. Values of the vapor pressure are in agreement with previous work. Below −13°C, the water film that is monitored to determine coexistence of liquid water (at one temperature) and ice (at another, higher, temperature) de-wets from the hydrophilic silicon prism employed in the authors’ apparatus. The de-wetting transition indicates a quantitative change in the structure of the supercooled liquid.

Entropic Aspects Of Supercooled Droplet Freezing, Alexander Kostinski, Will Cantrell Sep 2008

Entropic Aspects Of Supercooled Droplet Freezing, Alexander Kostinski, Will Cantrell

Department of Physics Publications

The freezing of supercooled water droplets in the atmosphere, with an emphasis on the entropic aspects of the problem, is examined. Supercooled water is a metastable state and, therefore, the associated phase transition must be irreversible. Temperature-dependent heat capacities of supercooled water and ice are used to calculate the entropy difference. That difference is then used to establish a lower bound on the amount of latent heat that can be liberated by the freezing droplets. The calculation is compared with tabulated values of the latent heat of fusion with surprising results. Based on a novel physical picture of the freezing …

The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining Sep 2008

The Resilience Of Law, Joseph Vining

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

The development of "law and economics" over the last half-century has expanded and reinforced a perception among academic lawyers that law itself is a social science. During the same period social science has moved closer to the discipline of natural science and the presuppositions and methods of its thought and work. This essay explores why law is not and cannot be a social science, and why there are grounds for hope in a future for democracy grounded in the rule of law.

China, Business Law, And Finance -- Accession To The World Trade Organization, Joseph Vining Sep 2008

China, Business Law, And Finance -- Accession To The World Trade Organization, Joseph Vining

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

China's entry into the world economy will affect not just how we act but how we think. It will affect especially what "business," "business law," and "business corporation" come to mean both in a transnational setting and in American law. The nature of American business law today still stands in the way of a wholly profit-maximizing approach to law or the world in general. But there is strong pressure, consistent with a general tendency in Western thought, to make business and corporate decision-making entirely manipulative and calculating and to eliminate the force of human value from it. This Youde Lecture …

Active Laser Radar Systems With Stochastic Electromagnetic Beams In Turbulent Atmosphere, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova, Halil T. Eyyuboğlu, Yahya Baykal Sep 2008

Active Laser Radar Systems With Stochastic Electromagnetic Beams In Turbulent Atmosphere, Yangjian Cai, Olga Korotkova, Halil T. Eyyuboğlu, Yahya Baykal

Physics Articles and Papers

Propagation of stochastic electromagnetic beams through paraxial ABCD optical systems operating through turbulent atmosphere is investigated with the help of the ABCD matrices and the generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral. In particular, the analytic formula is derived for the cross-spectral density matrix of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beam. We applied our analysis for the ABCD system with a single lens located on the propagation path, representing, in a particular case, the unfolded double-pass propagation scenario of active laser radar. Through a number of numerical examples we investigated the effect of local turbulence strength and lens' parameters on spectral, coherence and polarization …

Actin Bundling: Initiation Mechanisms And Kinetics, Pavel Kraikivski, Boris M. Slepchenko, Igor Igor L. Novak Sep 2008

Actin Bundling: Initiation Mechanisms And Kinetics, Pavel Kraikivski, Boris M. Slepchenko, Igor Igor L. Novak

UCHC Articles - Research

Bundling of rapidly polymerizing actin filaments underlies dynamics of filopodial protrusions that play an important role in cell migration and cell-cell interaction. Recently, formation of actin bundles has been reconstituted in vitro and two scenarios of bundle initiation, involving binding of two filament tips and, alternatively, linking of the tip of one filament to the side of the other, -have been discussed. A first theoretical analysis is presented indicating that the two mechanisms can be distinguished experimentally. While both of them result counter-intuitively in comparable numbers of bundles, these numbers scale differently with the average bundle length. We propose an …

Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith Sep 2008

Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

A comprehensive literature review and modeling effort have been conducted in order to determine which vital rates are most important to determining the growth and sustainability of marine mammal populations. Also addressed are the impacts of life-history, ecological, and genetic variation on vital rates and population sustainability and how much each vital parameter can change before a change in population trend would be expected. Additionally, the influence of ecological energetics and foraging strategies on vital rates and their limits of sustainable change are examined, and the nature of how an increase in sound in the marine environment might influence marine …

Limiting Subgradients Of Minimal Time Functions In Banach Spaces, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam Sep 2008

Limiting Subgradients Of Minimal Time Functions In Banach Spaces, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Nguyen Mau Nam

Mathematics Research Reports

The paper mostly concerns the study of generalized differential properties of the so-called minimal time functions associated, in particular, with constant dynamics and arbitrary closed target sets in control theory. Functions of this type play a significant role in many aspects of optimization, control theory: and Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations. We pay the main attention to computing and estimating limiting subgradients of the minimal value functions and to deriving the corresponding relations for Frechet type epsilon-subgradients in arbitrary Banach spaces.

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez Sep 2008

Mood, Emotion, And Affect In Group Performance: An Experiential Exercise, Carolyn I. Chavez, Maria J. Mendez

Organization Management Journal

One path to the successful transference of knowledge is through linking concepts to students’ experience. To provide this connection, we used an experiential methodology to design an exercise called mood, emotion, and affect in group performance. This exercise provides learners with an opportunity to experience, in addition to hearing and reading about, the effects of positive and negative dispositions on a group task. We describe the design and mechanics of the exercise with practical reflections from the use of the exercise in many different environments. The paper ends with end-of-the semester student comments and instructor reflections.

The Big Sky Model: A Regional Collaboration For Participatory Research On Environmental Health In The Rural West, Tony J. Ward, Diana Vanek, Nancy Marra, Andrij Holian, Earle Adams, David Jones, Randy Knuth

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

As an innovative community-based framework for science learning, the Big Sky Model is guiding high school and tribal college students from rural areas of Montana and Idaho in their understanding of chemical, physical, and environmental health concepts in the context of their own homes, schools, and communities. Students participate in classroom lessons and continue with systematic inquiry through actual field research to investigate a pressing, real-world issue: understanding the complex links between poor air quality and respiratory health outcomes. This article provides background information, outlines the procedure for implementing the model, and discusses its effectiveness as demonstrated through various evaluation …

Physics & Astronomy

[1] We examine phenomena associated with eruptions in the two different regimes of the solar corona and the terrestrial magnetosphere. We find striking similarities between the speeds of shrinking magnetic field lines in the corona and dipolarization fronts traversing the magnetosphere. We also examine the similarities between supra-arcade downflows observed during solar flares and bursty bulk flows seen in the magnetotail and find that these phenomena have remarkably similar speeds, velocity profiles, and size scales. Thus we show manifest similarities in the magnetic reconfiguration in response to the ejection of coronal mass ejections in the corona and the ejection of …

Linearizable Feedforward Systems: A Special Class, Issa Amadou Tall Sep 2008

Linearizable Feedforward Systems: A Special Class, Issa Amadou Tall

Miscellaneous (presentations, translations, interviews, etc)

We address the problem of linearizability of systems in feedforward form. In a recent paper [22] we completely solved the linearizability for strict feedforward systems. We extend here those results to a special class of feedforward systems. We provide an algorithm, along with explicit transformations, that linearizes the system by change of coordinates when some easily checkable conditions are met. We also re-analyze type II class of linearizable strict feedforward systems provided by Krstic in [9] and we show that this class is the unique linearizable among the class of quasi-linear strict feedforward systems (see Definition III.1). Our results allow …
