The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2008-09-05, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the College of Wooster's student run newspaper was published on September 5 of 2008 and it is eight pages long. The differences between the presidential candidates--John McCain and Barack Obama--are discussed in the heading article on the first page. The most recent lecturer for the Wooster Forum Series was Jared Cohen; he spoke about Islamic youth. There is a new group on campus known as the Sexuality Support Group and the group was founded by a recent graduate. An article about the Lilly House and Project is on page four. The recent African Art acquisitions for the …

Physics

A detailed description of the CUORICINO n130Te neutrinoless double-beta (0 νββ) decay experiment is given and recent results are reported. CUORICINO is an array of 62 tellurium oxide (TeOn2) bolometers with an active mass of 40.7 kg. It is cooled to ∼8–10 mK by a dilution refrigerator shielded from environmental radioactivity and energetic neutrons. It is running in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. These data represent an exposure of 11.83 kg yr or 91 mole-years of n130Te. No evidence for 0 νββ-decay was observed and a limit …

Closed-Loop Adaptive Optics Control In Strong Atmospheric Turbulence, Todd M. Venema Sep 2008

Closed-Loop Adaptive Optics Control In Strong Atmospheric Turbulence, Todd M. Venema

Theses and Dissertations

A self-referencing interferometer based closed-loop adaptive optics controller is developed which is designed to operate effectively under strong turbulence conditions. The aberrated optical field is modeled stochastically and then estimates of the state of the system are developed using a steady-state, fixed-gain Kalman filter. The phase of the optical field is considered the state of the system which is wrapped in a limited range of (-π, π]. This phase is unwrapped through the use of a least-squares reconstructor which has been modified to work effectively in the presence of branch points associated with strong turbulence. The conjugate of the optical …

Lateral Circulation And Suspended Sediment Transport In A Curved Estuarine Channel: Winyah Bay, Sc, Usa, Yong Hoon Kim, George Voulgaris Sep 2008

Lateral Circulation And Suspended Sediment Transport In A Curved Estuarine Channel: Winyah Bay, Sc, Usa, Yong Hoon Kim, George Voulgaris

Faculty Publications

Shipborne vertical profiles of flow and suspended sediment concentration collected on a transect, across a curved, nonsymmetrical estuarine channel are presented. Analysis of the transient cross-channel momentum balance equation shows that the lateral circulation pattern is controlled by the interaction between centrifugal and lateral baroclinic forcings although those two might not be necessarily in balance as suggested earlier by Seim and Gregg (1997). Instead, differential along-channel advection and local acceleration appear to influence greatly lateral circulation dynamics. During ebb when the water column is highly stratified, the interaction between centrifugal acceleration and opposite-directed lateral baroclinic forcing results in weak lateral …

Electrically Controlled Magnetism, Christian Binek, Xi He, Yi Wang, Sarbeswar Sahoo Sep 2008

Electrically Controlled Magnetism, Christian Binek, Xi He, Yi Wang, Sarbeswar Sahoo

Christian Binek Publications

Manipulation of magnetically ordered states by electrical means is a promising approach towards novel spintronics devices. We report on the electric control of surface magnetism in Cr2O3 thin films and uniaxial anisotropy in ferroelectric/ferromagnetic heterostructures, respectively. Artificial magnetoelectricity is realized in a BaTiO3/Fe heterostructure. Here, thermally induced coercivity changes of the Fe hysteresis loop are used to derive the stress imposed by the ferroelectric BaTiO3 substrate on the adjacent Fe film. Electrically induced coercivity changes give rise to a giant magnetoelectric susceptibility in the vicinity of the magnetic coercive field.

Watershed Management And Water Production Study For State Of Utah, Ibrahim Nourein Mohammed, David G. Tarboton Sep 2008

Watershed Management And Water Production Study For State Of Utah, Ibrahim Nourein Mohammed, David G. Tarboton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The amount of water produced from a watershed depends on the climate, soils, geology, land cover and land use. Precipitation water inputs in the form of rain or snow are partitioned by the watershed into evapotranspiration, runoff and groundwater recharge. This study has examined factors that may impact the production of runoff from Utah watersheds, focusing on factors related to land and watershed management. Specifically we are interested in how land use changes, such as afforestation, deforestation, agricultural, urban, industrial and mining development, impact runoff. The scale of interest is regional subbasins at the USGS cataloging unit 8 digit Hydrologic …

On Incorporating Learning Theories To Simulate A Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Environment, Nobel Khandaker, Leen-Kiat Soh Sep 2008

On Incorporating Learning Theories To Simulate A Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning Environment, Nobel Khandaker, Leen-Kiat Soh

School of Computing: Technical Reports

The success of a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment in improving student knowledge depends on factors like student attributes (e.g., ability and motivation) and elements of the CSCL environment (e.g., group size and group formation). Better understanding of the individual and combined effects of these factors on the learning outcome of students would help: (1) researchers design better CSCL systems and (2) teachers make better decisions while carrying out CSCL sessions. To aid the researchers and teachers, we have used the observations collected and derived from published theories on individual, peer-based, and collaborative learning to design SimCoL, a multiagent-based tool …

Practical Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Particulate Matter Concentrations, Christopher J. Paciorek, Jeff D. Yanosky, Robin C. Puett, Francine Laden, Helen H. Suh Sep 2008

Practical Large-Scale Spatio-Temporal Modeling Of Particulate Matter Concentrations, Christopher J. Paciorek, Jeff D. Yanosky, Robin C. Puett, Francine Laden, Helen H. Suh

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The last two decades have seen intense scientific and regulatory interest in the health effects of particulate matter (PM). Influential epidemiological studies that characterize chronic exposure of individuals rely on monitoring data that are sparse in space and time, so they often assign the same exposure to participants in large geographic areas and across time. We estimate monthly PM during 1988-2002 in a large spatial domain for use in studying health effects in the Nurses' Health Study. We develop a conceptually simple spatio-temporal model that uses a rich set of covariates. The model is used to estimate concentrations of PM10 …
