How Movement Properties Affect Prey Encounter Rates Of Ambush Versus Active Predators: A Comment On Scharf Et Al, Tal Avgar, Nir Horvitz, Luba Broitman, Ran Nathan Sep 2008

How Movement Properties Affect Prey Encounter Rates Of Ambush Versus Active Predators: A Comment On Scharf Et Al, Tal Avgar, Nir Horvitz, Luba Broitman, Ran Nathan

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Using an individual‐based model, Scharf and coworkers showed that ambush predators may encounter prey more frequently than active predators. We show that this surprising result emerges because active predators were oblivious to prey during movement, an assumption that refutes the common conception about active foraging and lessens the key difference between these foraging modes. A revised model confirms that active predators always encounter prey more frequently, unequivocally supporting the authors’ conclusion that the advantage of active predators diminishes as prey moves faster or more directionally. We suggest that movement‐dependent perception quality can determine the relative efficiency of these two foraging …

Physics Of Energy Efficient Buildings, David W. Hafemeister Sep 2008

Physics Of Energy Efficient Buildings, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

A scaling model shows that that the free temperature offset between inside and outside increases with the size of buildings. Reducing the lossiness in buildings offers three energy savings advantages: (1) reduce the multiplicative term, (2) increase the free—temperature subtractive term, and (3) cater to the degree-day distribution. Thermal storage can be made to transfer sufficient heat of the day into the coolth of the night. The daily passive solar input is modeled by integrating over the change in zenith angle during the day. Passive solar storage is sized to give a 12—hour time constant.

Three-Dimensional Microscopy By Laser Scanning And Multi-Wavelength Digital Holography, Alexander Khmaladze Sep 2008

Three-Dimensional Microscopy By Laser Scanning And Multi-Wavelength Digital Holography, Alexander Khmaladze

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents techniques of three-dimensional microscopy. First, an economical method of microscopic image formation that employs a raster-scanning laser beam focused on a sample, while non-imaging detector receives the scattered light is presented. The images produced by this method are analogous to the scanning electron microscopy with visible effects of shadowing and reflection. Compared to a conventional wide-field imaging system, the system allows for a greater flexibility, as the variety of optical detectors, such as PMT and position-sensitive quadrant photodiode can be used to acquire images. The system demonstrates a simple, low-cost method of achieving the resolution on the …

Dynamic Assessment: Towards A Model Of Dialogic Engagement, Robert Summers Sep 2008

Dynamic Assessment: Towards A Model Of Dialogic Engagement, Robert Summers

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of Dynamic Assessment (DA) training on the mediational strategies of experienced teachers of French as a foreign language. Moreover the strategies that mediators used for students at different levels of language experience were investigated. Last the ways in which mediators manifested mediational sensitivity, reciprocity and management was examined.

Four mediators underwent DA training that exposed them to the theoretical underpinnings of DA as well as sound DA procedures. To determine the effect of this training, the way in which the mediators conducted their mediation was compared from pre-DA training to post-DA training. Three of these …

Search For Long-Lived Particles Decaying Into Electron Or Photon Pairs With The D0 Detector, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, Dø Collaboration Sep 2008

Search For Long-Lived Particles Decaying Into Electron Or Photon Pairs With The D0 Detector, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, Dø Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

In this Letter we report on a search for long-lived particles that decay into final states with two electrons or photons. Such long-lived particles arise in a variety of theoretical models, such as hidden valleys and supersymmetry with gauge-mediated breaking. By precisely reconstructing the direction of the electromagnetic shower we are able to probe much longer lifetimes than previously explored. We see no evidence of the existence of such long-lived particles and interpret this search as a quasi model-independent limit on their production cross section, as well as a limit on a long-lived fourth generation quark.

Inclusive KS0KS0 production in ep collisions at the DESY ep collider HERA was studied with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 0.5fb-1. Enhancements in the mass spectrum were observed and are attributed to the production of f2(1270)/a20(1320), f2′(1525) and f0(1710). Masses and widths were obtained using a fit which takes into account theoretical predictions based on SU(3) symmetry arguments, and are consistent with the Particle Data Group values. The f0(1710) state, which has a mass consistent with a glueball candidate, was observed with a statistical significance of 5 standard deviations. However, if this state is the same as …

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Multiferroic heterostructures comprising ferroelectric and ferro(ferri)magnetic constituents have recently attracted considerable interest due to the strong coupling between magnetic and electric properties which may have interesting applications. Here we investigate the magnetoelectric coupling at the ferrimagnetic/ ferroelectric Fe3O4 /BaTiO3 (001) interfaces within the framework of density-functional theory. The coupling in this system originates from the interface bonding sensitive to atomic displacements at the interface and leads to the change in the interface magnetization when the polarization of the ferroelectric layer reverses. We consider two types of interface terminations of Fe3O4 which have different …

Proactive Role Discovery In Mediator-Free Environments, Mohamed Shehab, Elisa Bertino, Arif Ghafoor Sep 2008

Proactive Role Discovery In Mediator-Free Environments, Mohamed Shehab, Elisa Bertino, Arif Ghafoor

Cyber Center Publications

The rapid proliferation of Internet and related technologies has created tremendous possibilities for the interoperability between domains in distributed environments. Interoperability does not come easy at it opens the way for several security and privacy breaches. In this paper, we focus on the distributed authorization discovery problem that is crucial to enable secure inter- operability. We present a distributed access path discovery framework that does not require a centralized mediator. We propose and verify a role routing protocol that propagates secure, minimal-length paths to reachable roles in other domains. Finally, we present experimental results of our role routing protocol based …

A Parallel Computational Method For Simulating Two-Phase Gel Dynamics, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson, Grady Wright Sep 2008

A Parallel Computational Method For Simulating Two-Phase Gel Dynamics, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson, Grady Wright

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We develop a parallel computational algorithm for simulating models of gel dynamics where the gel is described by two phases, a networked polymer and a fluid solvent. The models consist of transport equations for the two phases, two coupled momentum equations, and a volumeaveraged incompressibility constraint. Multigrid with Vanka-type box relaxation scheme is used as preconditioner for the Krylov subspace solver (GMRES) to solve the momentum and incompressibility equations. Through numerical experiments of a model problem, the efficiency, robustness and scalability of the algorithm are illustrated.

A Note On Risk Prediction For Case-Control Studies, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan Sep 2008

A Note On Risk Prediction For Case-Control Studies, Sherri Rose, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We introduce a new method for prediction in case-control study designs, which is a simple extension of the work by van der Laan (2008). Case-control samples are biased since the proportion of cases in the sample is not the same as the population of interest. The case-control weighting for prediction proposed in this paper relies on knowledge of the true incidence probability P(Y=1) to eliminate the bias of the sampling design. In many practical settings, case-control weighting will outperform an existing method for prediction, intercept adjustment.

Applying A Resources Framework To Analysis Of The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, Trevor I. Smith, Michael C. Wittmann Sep 2008

Applying A Resources Framework To Analysis Of The Force And Motion Conceptual Evaluation, Trevor I. Smith, Michael C. Wittmann

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

We suggest one redefinition of common clusters of questions used to analyze student responses on the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation. Our goal is to propose a methodology that moves beyond an analysis of student learning defined by correct responses, either on the overall test or on clusters of questions defined solely by content. We use the resources framework theory of learning to define clusters within this experimental test that was designed without the resources framework in mind. We take special note of the contextual and representational dependence of questions with seemingly similar physics content. We analyze clusters in ways …

An M-Sequence Based Steganography Model For Voice Over Ip, Lei Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Jin Liu, Yongfeng Huang, Dan Feng Sep 2008

An M-Sequence Based Steganography Model For Voice Over Ip, Lei Tian, Ke Zhou, Hong Jiang, Jin Liu, Yongfeng Huang, Dan Feng

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Differing from applying steganography on storage cover media, steganography on Voice over IP (VoIP) must often delicately balance between providing adequate security and maintaining low latency for real-time services. This paper presents a novel real-time steganography model for VoIP that aims at providing good security for secret messages without sacrificing real-time performance. We achieve this goal by employing the well-known least-significant-bits (LSB) substitution approach to provide a reasonable tradeoff between the adequate information hiding requirement (good security and sufficient capacity) and the low latency requirement for VoIP. Further, we incorporate the m-sequence technique to eliminate the correlation among secret messages …

Picovoltmeter For Probing Vortex Dynamics In A Single Weak-Pinning Corbino Channel, Britton Plourde, T. W. Heitmann, Kang Yu, C. Song, M. P. Defeo

Physics - All Scholarship

We have developed a picovoltmeter using a Nb dc Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) for measuring the flux-flow voltage from a small number of vortices moving through a submicron weak-pinning superconducting channel. We have applied this picovoltmeter to measure the vortex response in a single channel arranged in a circle on a Corbino disk geometry. The circular channel allows the vortices to follow closed orbits without encountering any sample edges, thus eliminating the influence of entry barriers.

The Evolution Of Late‐Time Optical Emission From Sn 1986j, Dan Milisavljevic, Robert A. Fesen, Bruno Leibundgut, Robert P. Kirshner Sep 2008

The Evolution Of Late‐Time Optical Emission From Sn 1986j, Dan Milisavljevic, Robert A. Fesen, Bruno Leibundgut, Robert P. Kirshner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present late-time optical images and spectra of the Type IIn supernova SN 1986J. HST ACS/WFC images obtained in 2003 February show it to be still relatively bright, with mF606W = 21.4 and mF814W = 20.0 mag. Compared to 1994 December HST WFPC2 images, SN 1986J shows a decline of only <1 mag in brightness over 8 years. Ground-based spectra taken in 1989, 1991, and 2007 show a 50% decline in Hα emission between 1989 and 1991, and an order of magnitude drop between 1991 and 2007, along with the disappearance of He I line emissions during the period 1991-2007. The object's [O I] λλ6300, 6364, [O II] λλ7319, 7330 and [O III] λλ4959, 5007 emission lines show two prominent peaks near –1000 and –3500 km s−1, with the more blueshifted component declining significantly in strength between 1991 and 2007. The observed spectral evolution suggests two different origins for SN 1986J's late-time optical emission: dense, shock-heated circumstellar material, which gave rise to the initially bright Hα, He I, and [N II] λ5755 …
