Fire Retardancy Of Melamine And Zinc Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxide In Poly(Methyl Methacrylate), Charles Manzi-Nshuti, Jeanne Hossenlopp, Charles Wilkie Oct 2008

Fire Retardancy Of Melamine And Zinc Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxide In Poly(Methyl Methacrylate), Charles Manzi-Nshuti, Jeanne Hossenlopp, Charles Wilkie

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The thermal and fire properties of PMMA modified with various loadings of melamine or zinc aluminum undecenoate LDH were evaluated using TGA, DTA and cone calorimetry. The additives were characterized by X-ray diffraction, TGA, FT-IR and elemental analysis. While the two additives are very effective with this polymer, a higher loading of melamine (30%) is required to reach a good reduction in PHRR (47%) relative to the pure polymer, while with the LDH, 10% loading is enough to obtain a similar reduction. The combinations of these additives in PMMA reveal that the time to PHRR and the amount of smoke …

Optimal Political Control Of The Bureaucracy, Matthew C. Stephenson Oct 2008

Optimal Political Control Of The Bureaucracy, Matthew C. Stephenson

Michigan Law Review

It is widely believed that insulating an administrative agency from the influence of elected officials, whatever its other benefits orjustifications, reduces the agency's responsiveness to the preferences of political majorities. This Article argues, to the contrary, that a moderate degree of bureaucratic insulation from political control alleviates rather than exacerbates the countermajoritarian problems inherent in bureaucratic policymaking. An elected politician, though responsive to majoritarian preferences, will almost always deviate from the majority in one direction or the other Therefore, even if the average policy position of a given elected official tends to track the policy views of the median voter …

Assessing Pedagogy In Bioengineering Classrooms: Quantifying Elements Of The “How People Learn” Model Using The Vanth Observation System (Vos), Monica F. Cox, David S. Cordray Oct 2008

Assessing Pedagogy In Bioengineering Classrooms: Quantifying Elements Of The “How People Learn” Model Using The Vanth Observation System (Vos), Monica F. Cox, David S. Cordray

School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications

One goal of the VaNTH Engineering Research Center is to estimate the effects of the “value added” to bioengineering student learning as a result of “How People Learn” (HPL) framework interventions. A necessary step in that process is to assess pedagogical differences in both lecture-based and HPL-oriented courses. Data from 28 bioengineering courses, over five semesters, were analyzed using a newly developed HPL Index. This index, developed from the Classroom Interaction Observation portion of the VaNTH Observation System, reports levels of HPL-inspired pedagogy, traditional pedagogy, and classroom organization within a class using codes for different types of faculty and student …

Permutation Representations On Schubert Varieties, Julianna S. Tymoczko Oct 2008

Permutation Representations On Schubert Varieties, Julianna S. Tymoczko

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

This paper defines and studies permutation representations on the equivariant cohomology of Schubert varieties, as representations both over ℂ and over ℂ[t1, t2, . . . , tn]. We show these group actions are the same as an action of simple transpositions studied geometrically by M. Brion, and give topological meaning to the divided difference operators of Berstein-Gelfand-Gelfand, Demazure, Kostant-Kumar, and others. We analyze these representations using the combinatorial approach to equivariant cohomology introduced by Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson. We find that each permutation representation on equivariant cohomology produces a representation on ordinary cohomology that is trivial, though the equivariant representation is not.

Under-The-Table Overruling, Christopher J. Peters Oct 2008

Under-The-Table Overruling, Christopher J. Peters

All Faculty Scholarship

In this contribution to a Wayne Law Review symposium on the first three years of the Roberts Court, the author normatively assesses the Court's practice of "under-the-table overruling," or "underruling," in high-profile constitutional cases involving abortion, campaign-finance reform, and affirmative action. The Court "underrules" when it renders a decision that undercuts a recent precedent without admitting that it is doing so. The author contends that underruling either is not supported by, or is directly incompatible with, three common rationales for constitutional stare decisis: the noninstrumental rationale, the predictability rationale, and the legitimacy rationale. In particular, while the latter rationale - …

Mentors’ Views About Developing Effective English Teaching Practices, Peter Hudson, Jan Millwater Oct 2008

Mentors’ Views About Developing Effective English Teaching Practices, Peter Hudson, Jan Millwater

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Effective mentoring in English is considered paramount to a preservice teacher’s development. What are mentors’ views about developing effective English teaching practices in their mentees? This study used quantitative data (survey) and qualitative data (questionnaire) on 24 mentors’ perceptions of mentoring second-year preservice teachers for teaching English and, in particular, the teaching of writing. Quantitative data measured mentors’ perceptions of their attributes and practices across five factors for mentoring (i.e., Personal Attributes, System Requirements, Pedagogical Knowledge, Modelling, and Feedback) with 67% or more of these mentors (n=24) agreeing or strongly agreeing they provided all of the advocated attributes and practices …

Extension Of Viscoplasticity Based On Overstress To Capture The Effects Of Prior Aging On The Time Dependent Deformation Behavior Of A High-Temperature Polymer: Experiments And Modeling, Amber J. W. Mcclung

Theses and Dissertations

The inelastic deformation behavior of PMR-15 neat resin, a high-temperature thermoset polymer, was investigated at 288 degrees C. The experimental program was designed to explore the influence of strain rate on tensile loading, unloading, and strain recovery behaviors. In addition, the effect of the prior strain rate on the relaxation response of the material, as well as on the creep behavior following strain controlled loading were examined. The experimental data were modeled with the Viscoplasticity Based on Overstress (VBO) theory. A systematic procedure for determining model parameters was developed and the model was employed to predict the response of the …

Meeting Planning Basics: A Guide For Administrative Professionals, Larissa J. Schultz Oct 2008

Meeting Planning Basics: A Guide For Administrative Professionals, Larissa J. Schultz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Planning meetings and events is a job function that requires skills and knowledge of the meeting management industry. In today’s economy and within many organizations across the globe, both corporate and association meeting planning is a job function that is frequently being seen as a task that an administrative professional can take on in addition to their other workload. While in many instances this may seem like the most efficient and cost-effective route for organizations to undertake, in the long-run it can actually cost the organization more – in both time and money. In addition, it can lead to poorly …

Engineering Management Framework In Support Of Modeling & Simulation Application For Domain Specific Procurement, Thomas Guy Litwin Oct 2008

Engineering Management Framework In Support Of Modeling & Simulation Application For Domain Specific Procurement, Thomas Guy Litwin

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A strategic process is desirable for project-based organizations in order for them to be efficient and effective when developing Modeling & Simulation (M&S) systems. This thesis proposes an overarching process that combines traditional M&S and Engineering Management methodologies in a new framework to support M&S organizations during the procurement process.

This thesis proposes both a Strategic Project Management Process (SPMP) and a systems engineering process for M&S federation development projects. The systems engineering process utilizes the artifacts of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) to support building M&S federations driven by operational requirements. Detailed research of this systems engineering process revealed a …

Modeling Geographic Population Dispersion Utilizing Geospatial Information System Environment Agents In An Agent Based Model, Karl D. Liebert Oct 2008

Modeling Geographic Population Dispersion Utilizing Geospatial Information System Environment Agents In An Agent Based Model, Karl D. Liebert

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

New capabilities in agent based model (ABM) environments are opening the door to the creation of ABM that may incorporate high-quality, real world environment data in the form of Geospatial Information System (GIS) files . In the past, GJS environments were only possible through extensive software development efforts focused on specific model applications.

This thesis explores the value and issues of using GIS data to provide an ABM environment. It examines the ability of ABM development environments (DE) to support GIS environment data. The selected ABM DE is then used to model population behavior in an environment defined by authoritative …

Incentive Effect Of Liability Rules In The Presence Of Liability Insurance In The Maritime Law Context: An Economic Analysis, Muhammad Masum Billah Oct 2008

Incentive Effect Of Liability Rules In The Presence Of Liability Insurance In The Maritime Law Context: An Economic Analysis, Muhammad Masum Billah

Dalhousie Law Journal

Incentive effect of liability law may be affected by the presence of liability insurance. Apparently when a party has liability insurance and does not have to pay directly from its own pocket, it will have less motivation to exercise proper care. This tendency of an insured is known as "moral hazard." There are many studies on the problem of "moral hazard" and on various mechanisms how to address it. Yet, there is a lack of academic discussion on comparative analysis between liability law and liability insurance in terms of their effect on creation of incentives; that is, whether liability law …

Biomarker Identification For Prostate Cancer Using An Efficient Feature Selection Algorithm, Vamsi Krishnam Raju Mantena Oct 2008

Biomarker Identification For Prostate Cancer Using An Efficient Feature Selection Algorithm, Vamsi Krishnam Raju Mantena

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, there has been an increased interest in using protein mass spectrometry to identify biomarkers that discriminate diseased from healthy individuals. A biomarker is a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathological processes, or pharmacological responses to a therapeutic intervention. Identifying biomarkers will be an important step towards disease characterization and patient management. One challenge of biomarker identification is how to handle the high dimensional mass spectral data. In this thesis, we applied an efficient feature selection algorithm to mass spectrometry data obtained from prostate tissue samples to identify prostate …

Computational Solution Of Tail Buffet Response And Active Flow Control, Kaushik Laxmikant Joshi Oct 2008

Computational Solution Of Tail Buffet Response And Active Flow Control, Kaushik Laxmikant Joshi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, numerical simulation of the multidisciplinary method for prediction and control of vortex induced tail buffeting is studied using delta wing-single tail configuration. Flow conditions are chosen such that wing vortex cores experience vortex breakdown and the resulting wake flow impinges on the vertical tail. The aero/structure problem is solved sequentially using three sets of equations on a multi-block grid structure. To obtain aerodynamic loading on the tail, the fluid flow around the wing-tail assembly is computed by time-accurately solving unsteady, laminar, compressible Navier-Stokes equations using an implicit, upwind, flux-difference splitting finite volume scheme. Then the aeroelastic equations …

Canonical Correlation Feature Selection For Sensors With Overlapping Bands: Theory And Application, Biliana S. Paskaleva, Majeed M. Hayat, Zhipeng Wang, J. Scott Tyo, Sanjay Krishna Oct 2008

Canonical Correlation Feature Selection For Sensors With Overlapping Bands: Theory And Application, Biliana S. Paskaleva, Majeed M. Hayat, Zhipeng Wang, J. Scott Tyo, Sanjay Krishna

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The main focus of this paper is a rigorous development and validation of a novel canonical correlation feature- selection (CCFS) algorithm that is particularly well suited for spectral sensors with overlapping and noisy bands. The proposed approach combines a generalized canonical correlation analysis framework and a minimum mean-square-error criterion for the selection of feature subspaces. The latter induces ranking of the best linear combinations of the noisy overlapping bands and, in doing so, guarantees a minimal generalized distance between the centers of classes and their respective reconstructions in the space spanned by sensor bands. To demonstrate the efficacy and the …

Erasing Dark Matter Cusps In Cosmological Galactic Halos With Baryons, Emilio Romano-Diaz, Isaac Shlosman, Yehuda Hoffman, Clayton Heller Oct 2008

Erasing Dark Matter Cusps In Cosmological Galactic Halos With Baryons, Emilio Romano-Diaz, Isaac Shlosman, Yehuda Hoffman, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We study the central dark matter (DM) cusp evolution in cosmologically grown galactic halos. Numerical models with and without baryons (baryons+DM, hereafter BDM model, and pure DM, PDM model, respectively) are advanced from identical initial conditions, obtained using the Constrained Realization method. The DM cusp properties are contrasted by a direct comparison of pure DM and baryonic models. We find a divergent evolution between the PDM and BDM models within the inner few × 10 kpc region. The PDM model forms an R−1 cusp as expected, while the DM in the BDM model forms a larger isothermal cusp R …

High Bandwidth Control Of Precision Motion Instrumentation, Douglas A. Bristow, Jingyan Dong, Andrew G. Alleyne, Srinivasa M. Salapaka, Placid M. Ferreira Oct 2008

High Bandwidth Control Of Precision Motion Instrumentation, Douglas A. Bristow, Jingyan Dong, Andrew G. Alleyne, Srinivasa M. Salapaka, Placid M. Ferreira

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article presents a high-bandwidth control design suitable for precision motion instrumentation. Iterative learning control (ILC), a feedforward technique that uses previous iterations of the desired trajectory, is used to leverage the repetition that occurs in many tasks, such as raster scanning in microscopy. Two ILC designs are presented. The first design uses the motion system dynamic model to maximize bandwidth. The second design uses a time-varying bandwidth that is particularly useful for nonsmooth trajectories such as raster scanning. Both designs are applied to a multiaxis piezoelectric-actuated flexure system and evaluated on a nonsmooth trajectory. The ILC designs demonstrate significant …

Simulations Of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations - I. Growth Of Large-Scale Density Fluctuations, Ryuichi Takahashi, Naoki Yoshida, Shun Saito, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We critically examine how well the evolution of large-scale density perturbations is followed in cosmological N-body simulations. We first run a large volume simulation and perform a mode-by-mode analysis in three-dimensional Fourier space. We show that the growth of large-scale fluctuations significantly deviates from linear-theory predictions. The deviations are caused by non-linear coupling with a small number of modes at largest scales owing to finiteness of the simulation volume. We then develop an analytic model based on second-order perturbation theory to quantify the effect. Our model accurately reproduces the simulation results. For a single realization, the second-order effect appears typically …
