On Special Pieces, The Springer Correspondence, And Unipotent Characters, Pramod N. Achar, Daniel S. Sage Oct 2008

On Special Pieces, The Springer Correspondence, And Unipotent Characters, Pramod N. Achar, Daniel S. Sage

Faculty Publications

Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group over the algebraic closure of a finite field double-struck F of good characteristic. In this paper, we demonstrate a remarkable compatibility between the Springer correspondence for G and the parametrization of unipotent characters of G(double-struck F ). In particular, we show that in a suitable sense, "large" portions of these two assignments in fact coincide. This extends earlier work of Lusztig on Springer representations within special pieces of the unipotent variety. ©2008 by The Johns Hopkins University Press. q q

Constructive Characterizations Of 3-Connected Matroids Of Path Width Three, Brian Beavers, James Oxley Oct 2008

Constructive Characterizations Of 3-Connected Matroids Of Path Width Three, Brian Beavers, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

A matroid M is sequential or has path width 3 if M is 3-connected and its ground set has a sequential ordering, that is, an ordering (e1, e2, ..., en) such that ({e1, e2, ..., ek}, {ek + 1, ek + 2, ..., en}) is a 3-separation for all k in {3, 4, ..., n - 3}. This paper proves that every sequential matroid is easily constructible from a uniform matroid of rank or corank two by a sequence of moves each of which consists of a slight modification of segment-cosegment or cosegment-segment exchange. It is also proved that if …

Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone Oct 2008

Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Schists from two mylonitic localities in the footwall of a low-angle normal fault in the eastern Alps record different degrees of embrittlement during exhumation, depending on the extent to which fluid–rock reactions proceeded. At one site, graphitic schists preserve textural evidence for two metamorphic reactions that modified XCO2XCO2 and/or fluid volume: (1) reaction between graphite and aqueous fluid that increased XCO2XCO2 without changing the molar amount of fluid, and (2) replacement of titanite by rutile, calcite, and quartz. The latter reaction involved net consumption of increasingly CO2-rich fluid. Areas where the first reaction proceeded are associated with abundant Mode I …

An Investigation Of The Correlation Between Passive Monitoring And Activie Probing Techniques Used In Wlan Mesh Networks, Chenzhe Zhang, Mark Davis

Conference papers

In recent years, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a promising solution to provide low cost networks that extend Internet access and other networking services. Mesh routers form the backbone connectivity through cooperative routing in an often unstable wireless medium. Therefore, the techniques used to monitor and manage the performance metrics to help optimize the link performance in WMNs. This paper presents an assessment of the correlation between passive monitoring and active probing techniques used for link performance measurement in WMNs. Factoring Families Of Positive Knots On Lorenz-Like Templates, Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

We show that for m and n positive, composite closed orbits realized on the Lorenz-like template L(m, n) have two prime factors, each a torus knot; and that composite closed orbits on L(−1,−1) have either two for three prime factors, two of which are torus knots.

Prediction Of Biological Activity Spectra For Few Anticancer Drugs Derived From Plant Sources, A. John De Britto, T. Leon Stephan Raj, D. Abiya Chelliah

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Over the past decade plants have become an interesting source of new classes of pharmacologically active natural products. Some secondary metabolites are also well known for their effectiveness on living species. The PASS (Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances) computer program, which is able to simultaneously predict more than one thousand biological and toxicological activities from only the structural formulas of the chemicals, was used to predict the biological activity profile of 7 secondary metabolites. PASS predictions were successfully compared to the available information on the pharmacological and toxicological activity of these compounds.

Guns, Babies And Labor: Campaign Finance Networks In The 2000 Elections (Working Draft), Suzanne M. Robbins, Maksim Tsvetovat

Working Papers

This paper seeks to expand upon what we know regarding the structure of interest group networks. To explore the potential for Social Network Analysis in the larger context of group behavior and information sharing, we make use of existing federal contribution data to explore how non-corporate political action committees are linked to one another at the federal level via regulated campaign finance. Thus, we explore the density of networks, who the central players are and group relationships with respect to investment behavior. Here, we make use of FEC contribution data from the 2000 electoral cycle to describe and explore the …

Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov Oct 2008

Cell Groups Reveal Structure Of Stimulus Space, Carina Curto, Vladimir Itskov

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

An important task of the brain is to represent the outside world. It is unclear how the brain may do this, however, as it can only rely on neural responses and has no independent access to external stimuli in order to ‘‘decode’’ what those responses mean. We investigate what can be learned about a space of stimuli using only the action potentials (spikes) of cells with stereotyped—but unknown—receptive fields. Using hippocampal place cells as a model system, we show that one can (1) extract global features of the environment and (2) construct an accurate representation of space, up to an …

North Pacific Right Whale (Eubalaena Japonica) Seasonal And Diel Calling Patterns From Long-Term Acoustic Recordings In The Southeastern Bering Sea, 2000–2006, Lisa Munger, Sean Wiggins, Sue Moore, John Hildebrand

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We assessed North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica) seasonal and daily calling patterns in the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) using long-term hydrophone recordings from October 2000 through January 2006. We detected right whale calls on the SEBS middle shelf (<100 m depth) as early as May, intermittently throughout summer and fall, and as late as December. Calls also were detected on one day in June 2005 on the SEBS slope (>1,000 m), but were not detected near Kodiak Island from April to August 2003. In months with calls, detections occurred on more days in July–October (≥6 d/mo), than from May to June or November to December (≤3 d/mo). Calls were clustered in time and were usually detected on 1–3 consecutive days with a median interval of 6.5 d …

Using English Information In Non-English Web Search, Wei Gao, Wei Gao, Ming Zhou Oct 2008

Using English Information In Non-English Web Search, Wei Gao, Wei Gao, Ming Zhou

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The leading web search engines have spent a decade building highly specialized ranking functions for English web pages. One of the reasons these ranking functions are effective is that they are designed around features such as PageRank, automatic query and domain taxonomies, and click-through information, etc. Unfortunately, many of these features are absent or altered in other languages. In this work, we show how to exploit these English features for a subset of Chinese queries which we call linguistically non-local (LNL). LNL Chinese queries have a minimally ambiguous English translation which also functions as a good English query. We first …

Variations In Stomatal Traits Of 14 Bornean Tree Species Growing On Soils With Different Moisture Contents In Lambir Hills National Park, Whitney Logan Cannon

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

The goal of this study was to look at variations in stomatal traits of tree species on soils with different moisture contents and fertility at Lambir Hills National Park. Stomates are important structures on the surface of leaves that mediate conduction of moisture and gassesin and out of the leaf. If stomatalt raits are important for regulation, then there should be variation in stomatal traits in regards to their soil specialization. Spreadsheet Data Resampling For Monte-Carlo Simulation, Thin Yin Leong, Wee Leong Lee Oct 2008

Spreadsheet Data Resampling For Monte-Carlo Simulation, Thin Yin Leong, Wee Leong Lee

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The pervasiveness of spreadsheets software resulted in its increased application as a simulation tool for business analysis. Random values generation supporting such evaluations using spreadsheets are simple and yet powerful. However, the typical approach to Monte-Carlo simulations, which is what simulations with stochasticity are called, requires significant amount of time to be spent on data collection, data collation, and distribution function fitting. In fact, the latter can be overwhelming for undergraduate students to learn and do properly in a short time. Resampling eliminates both the need to fit distributions to the sample data, and to perform the ensuing tests of …

Leveraging Social Context For Searching Social Media, Marc Smith, Vladimir Barash, Lise Getoor, Hady W. Lauw Oct 2008

Leveraging Social Context For Searching Social Media, Marc Smith, Vladimir Barash, Lise Getoor, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ability to utilize and benefit from today's explosion of social media sites depends on providing tools that allow users to productively participate. In order to participate, users must be able to find resources (both people and information) that they find valuable. Here, we argue that in order to do this effectively, we should make use of a user's "social context". A user's social context includes both their personal social context (their friends and the communities to which they belong) and their community social context (their role and identity in different communities).

Ceg 460/660: Introduction To Software Computer Engineering, Jeffrey Mcdonald

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

This course is concerned with the techniques of designing and constructing large programs. Some of the required basic concepts necessarily have to be developed using small programs as examples. To this extent we also study programming-in-the-small. The overall objectives are to present an overview of issues in the development of sot1ware, to discuss terminology, to illustrate via example case studies, and to give sufficiently detailed advice on how to develop quality software. Hands-on experience is emphasized through the use of homework and a class project.

The objective was to evaluate the pulmonary disposition of the ubiquinone homolog coenzyme Q1 (CoQ1) on passage through lungs of normoxic (exposed to room air) and hyperoxic (exposed to 85% O2 for 48 h) rats. CoQ1 or its hydroquinone (CoQ1H2) was infused into the arterial inflow of isolated, perfused lungs, and the venous efflux rates of CoQ1H2 and CoQ1 were measured. CoQ1H2 appeared in the venous effluent when CoQ1 was infused, and CoQ1 appeared when CoQ1H2 was infused. In normoxic lungs, CoQ …
