Ice-Limit Of Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory, T. Heinzl, A. Ilderton, K. Langfeld, M. Lavelle, D. Mcmullan Oct 2008

Ice-Limit Of Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory, T. Heinzl, A. Ilderton, K. Langfeld, M. Lavelle, D. Mcmullan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In this paper we describe gauge invariant multi-quark states generalising the path integral framework developed by Parrinello, Jona-Lasinio and Zwanziger to amend the Faddeev-Popov approach. This allows us to produce states such that, in a limit which we call the ice-limit, fermions are dressed with glue exclusively from the fundamental modular region associated with Coulomb gauge. The limit can be taken analytically without difficulties, avoiding the Gribov problem. This is llustrated by an unambiguous construction of gauge invariant mesonic states for which we simulate the static quark--antiquark potential.

Theoretical Modeling Of Cortisol Sensor, Milorad Gordic Oct 2008

Theoretical Modeling Of Cortisol Sensor, Milorad Gordic

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the theoretical modeling of a response of an electrochemical BioMEMS sensor for detecting small amounts of cortisol hormone. The electrochemical sensor utilizes a catalyst enzyme (3a-HSD) to convert cortisone to cortisol and the Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV) as a preferred method to measure the forward and reverse current of the system. The parameters and equations necessary to estimate the Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV) theoretical response are determined and outlined. The response is modeled and the results are compared to the experimental data. Further, the design of the sensor is analyzed and suggestions are made on how to …

Extreme-Ultraviolet Polarimeter Utilizing Laser-Generated High-Order Harmonics, Nicole Brimhall, Matthew Turner, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross Oct 2008

Extreme-Ultraviolet Polarimeter Utilizing Laser-Generated High-Order Harmonics, Nicole Brimhall, Matthew Turner, Nicholas Herrick, David D. Allred, R. Steven Turley, Michael Ware, Justin Peatross

Faculty Publications

We describe an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) polarimeter that employs laser-generated high-order harmonics as the light source. The polarimeter is designed to characterize materials and thin films for use with EUV light. Laser high harmonics are highly directional with easily rotatable linear polarization, not typically available with other EUV sources. The harmonics have good wavelength coverage, potentially spanning the entire EUV from a few to a hundred nanometers. Our instrument is configured to measure reflectances from 14 to 30 nm and has ~180 spectral resolution (lambda/delta lambda). The reflection from a sample surface can be measured over a continuous range of incident …

Synthesis, Characterization And Reactivity Of Some Selected Organosulfur Oxo-Acids, Adenike Otoikhian Oct 2008

Synthesis, Characterization And Reactivity Of Some Selected Organosulfur Oxo-Acids, Adenike Otoikhian

Dissertations and Theses

The two major metabolites after S-Oxygenation of dimethylthiourea (N, N'-dimethylaminoiminomethanesulfinic acid (DMAIMSA) and N, N'-dimethylamino iminomethanesulfonic acid (DMAIMSOA)) were synthesized. Structural analysis by X-ray crystallography shows that DMAIMSA and DMAIMSOA exist as zwitterionic species in their solid form, with a positive charge delocalized around an sp2-hybridized carbon center flanked by two nitrogen atoms.

Kinetics and mechanistic studies on the oxidation of DMAIMSA and DMAIMSOA by acidified iodate/iodine and bromate/bromine were studied. The results reveal that DMAIMSA, unlike DMAIMSOA, is highly reactive. DMAIMSOA is very inert and unreactive in low pH environments. The difference in reactivity is attributed to …

Exploration Of A Physical Picture For The Qcd Scalar Channel, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora Oct 2008

Exploration Of A Physical Picture For The Qcd Scalar Channel, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora

Physics - All Scholarship

A generalized linear sigma model is employed to study the quark structure of low lying scalar as well as pseudoscalar states. The model allows the possible mixing of quark anti-quark states with others made of two quarks and two antiquarks but no a priori assumption is made about the quark contents of the predicted physical states. Effects of SU(3) symmetry breaking are included. The lighter conventional pseudoscalars turn out to be primarily of two quark type whereas the lighter scalars have very large four quark admixtures.

Tending To Richmond's Children: Community Strategies To Bridge Service Gaps, Judith D. Moore, Jessamyn Taylor

National Health Policy Forum

The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to Richmond, Virginia, in October 2008 to explore social and environmental determinants of children’s health, including the impacts that poverty and exposure to lead-based paint have on birth outcomes, child development, and school readiness; and the community's efforts to address them. Though not large in population terms, Richmond faces many of the social and economic problems often common in larger urban areas—concentrated poverty, migration of wealth and services to the surrounding counties, a high infant mortality rate, and troubled schools. The site visit explored community strategies to improve birth outcomes and …

A Proof Of Lagrange’S Four-Square Theorem, Zhu Cao Oct 2008

A Proof Of Lagrange’S Four-Square Theorem, Zhu Cao

Algebra/Number Theory Seminar

Lagrange's four-square Theorem states that every positive integer can be expressed as the sum of four squares of integers. It was first proved in 1770 by Lagrange (and named after him much later). In this talk, we begin with some preliminary results in q-series and then deduce four-square Theorem using an elementary approach. Our proof was first given by Michael Hirschhorn.

On Circuit Sizes Of Binary Matroids, James Reid Oct 2008

On Circuit Sizes Of Binary Matroids, James Reid

Combinatorics Seminar

Murty in 1971 characterized the connected binary matroids with all circuits having the same size. We characterize the connected binary matroids with a deletable series-class such that all circuits containing the series-class have the same size, and all circuits avoiding the series-class have the same size. As a consequence of this result we obtain both Murty's result and other results on matroids with circuits of only two sizes. This is joint work with Manoel Lemos and Haidong Wu.

Seepage Rates In Closed Basins, Volha Martysevich Oct 2008

Seepage Rates In Closed Basins, Volha Martysevich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Seepage is an important component of the water budget in closed basins that do not have surface water drainage features. In the shallow water table environment of Florida, internal drainage of soil controls flooding. With the recent rapid population growth and urban development in the state, a simple, field-based method is needed to estimate seepage rates. In this study five locations in Hillsborough County, Florida, were instrumented with wells with pressure transducers measuring water level fluctuations at 1 minute resolution. For closed basins with lakes, evaporation (E) rates were determined using data from a weather station and Penman-Monteith FAO56 method, …

Supplementing Cattle On Pasture: When, What And How Much?, Roy Burris Oct 2008

Supplementing Cattle On Pasture: When, What And How Much?, Roy Burris

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The biggest advantage of maintaining cattle in the southeast is our ability to grow forages. It is generally an economic advantage to make maximum use of our forage and then supplement only when needed to meet our production goals. Judicious use of extra nutrition to grazing cattle can allow us to meet an objective which was best stated by Hoveland in 1986:

“Our objective is to maintain pasture at the highest quality that the environment will allow and efficiently convert as much of the pasture as possible into saleable animal product.”

Practical Grazing Management And Feed Strategies To Alleviate Fescue Toxicosis, Glen Aiken Oct 2008

Practical Grazing Management And Feed Strategies To Alleviate Fescue Toxicosis, Glen Aiken

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Tall fescue grown in Kentucky is productive and persistent and that is why the state has 5 million acres of the stuff! Fescue has tolerances to drought, low fertility, and overgrazing that are attributed to a fungal endophyte which infects most tall fescue plants. Unfortunately, these advantages of tall fescue that livestock producers appreciate are offset by reduced calving percentages and calf weight gains caused by consumption of ergot alkaloids produced by the endophyte. Ergot alkaloids affect the physiology of cattle to cause elevation in body temperature, reduced sweating, retention of winter hair coats and uncontrollable growth of summer hair …

Herbicide Options For Pasture Weed Control, Jonathan D. Green Oct 2008

Herbicide Options For Pasture Weed Control, Jonathan D. Green

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Weeds have become more evident and problematic in grazed pastures as forage and livestock production systems have intensified. As animals consume the more desirable and palatable plant species in pastures, weedy plants become more abundant. In particular, animals tend to avoid grazing plants which contain thorns, prickly spines, or are unpalatable making some pastures less productive. In fact, many of the more problematic plants observed in Kentucky’s grazed pastures possess these characteristics including thistles, spiny amaranth (spiny pigweed), horsenettle, common cocklebur, tall ironweed, and buttercups.

Since 2001-2002 and the outbreak of Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MLRS) the University of Kentucky has been developing stronger ties with the state’s equine industry. Approximately 30% of the foal crop was lost in the Central Bluegrass region during this period with a devastating impact on the industry. Traditionally, many Thoroughbred farms have functioned as independent entities, but MLRS helped them to realize that the University of Kentucky had tremendous amount of expertise that they could provide in the areas of animal health, forage management, and other areas. Initially, there were many theories as to the cause of MLRS with …

Forage Legumes Vs. Fertilizer Nitrogen, Garry D. Lacefield

Kentucky Grazing Conference

A few weeks after I started to work as a Forage Extension Specialist at the University of Kentucky, I heard my mentor and forage idol, Mr. Warren Thompson, speak on forage legumes. Warren, along with Dr’s. Tim Taylor and W.C. Templeton had pioneered the “Pasture Renovation Program” in Kentucky. In addition, Mr. Ed Smith had joined the team and collectively they developed the “Power-til Pasture Renovator.” Warren began his presentation by talking about Kentucky Forages pointing out we were so fortunate to have a good grass base and the opportunity to grow lots of legumes. He also talked about all …

Growth Of Grasses And Legumes: Impact On Grazing, S. Ray Smith Oct 2008

Growth Of Grasses And Legumes: Impact On Grazing, S. Ray Smith

Kentucky Grazing Conference

The primary, cool season, perennial pasture grasses used in Kentucky are orchardgrass, bluegrass, and tall fescue. When not grazed or harvested, each of these passes through successive stages of growth in the spring: 1) leafy vegetative; 2) boot with seed heads enclosed in leaf sheath; 3) heading when the seed heads begin to show and, 4) bloom when pollination has occurred ( Figure 2). Since fiber and lignin contents increase steadily beyond the vegetative stage, while percent protein and digestibility decrease, a major goal in grazing management is to maintain these grasses in the leafy, vegetative stage at all times. …
