An Impact And Effectiveness Program Evaluation Of Nclb Supplemental Education Services In The Rochester City School District, Terrence J. Hofer

Education Doctoral

Supplemental education services (SES) were created within the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 as a strategy to support student achievement by providing tutoring or other instructional support activities from State-approved vendors outside the regular school day. This program evaluation of the Rochester City School District’s SES program in 2005-06 and 2006-07 was framed using the impact evaluation and effectiveness evaluation components of Stufflebeam’s CIPP model. The purpose of the study was to determine who participated in SES and to what extent, and to determine the effectiveness of the participation based on the change in New York State …

Can You Hear Me Now? An Exploration Of Targeted Professional Development Delivered To School Counselors, Lesli Clara Myers Nov 2008

Can You Hear Me Now? An Exploration Of Targeted Professional Development Delivered To School Counselors, Lesli Clara Myers

Education Doctoral

While many scholars have spent time examining trends and changes within the field of school counseling, little or no attention has been given to the types of professional development that may assist school counselors in making the corresponding adjustments to these trends and changes (Akos & Galassi, 2004). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the impact of targeted professional development upon school counselor practice. The question guiding this study was, "How does targeted professional development impact the practice of school counselors?" Three professional development sessions (based on the Transforming School Counseling initiative and American School Counselor …

Commercial Evaluation Of A Continuous Micronutrient Fortification Process For Nixtamal Tortillas, Michael L. Dunn, Sergio O. Serna-Saldivar, Diana Sanchez-Hernandez, Robert W. Griffin

Faculty Publications

The corn tortilla plays an integral role in the Mexican diet and is an ideal vehicle for micronutrient fortification. Approximately 60% of corn tortillas in Mexico are produced from nixtamal, with the remainder prepared from masa flour. A process for continuous fortification of nixtamal tortillas was evaluated in two commercial mills in Mexico. A commercial powder dosifier was used to add micronutrient premix containing iron, zinc, folic acid, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin to nixtamal (1 g/kg) as it was milled. After training and preliminary sampling, mills produced fortified tortillas unassisted for four weeks. Masa flow rates over a four-day period …

Modality Mixture Projections For Semantic Video Event Detection, Jialie Shen, Dacheng Tao, Xuelong Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Event detection is one of the most fundamental components for various kinds of domain applications of video information system. In recent years, it has gained a considerable interest of practitioners and academics from different areas. While detecting video event has been the subject of extensive research efforts recently, much less existing approach has considered multimodal information and related efficiency issues. In this paper, we use a subspace selection technique to achieve fast and accurate video event detection using a subspace selection technique. The approach is capable of discriminating different classes and preserving the intramodal geometry of samples within an identical …

Profile-Guided Program Simplification For Effective Testing And Analysis, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su Nov 2008

Profile-Guided Program Simplification For Effective Testing And Analysis, Lingxiao Jiang, Zhendong Su

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Many testing and analysis techniques have been developed for inhouse use. Although they are effective at discovering defects before a program is deployed, these techniques are often limited due to the complexity of real-world code and thus miss program faults. It will be the users of the program who eventually experience failures caused by the undetected faults. To take advantage of the large number of program runs carried by the users, recent work has proposed techniques to collect execution profiles from the users for developers to perform post-deployment failure analysis. However, in order to protect users' privacy and to reduce …

Market Liquidity Provision For On-Demand Computing, Zhiling Guo Nov 2008

Market Liquidity Provision For On-Demand Computing, Zhiling Guo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper focuses on a market intermediary’s role of liquidity provision to support on-demand computing in a dynamic market trading environment. We outline a framework in which a number of distributed agents sell and buy assets based on their changing utilities over time and a service provider acts as a market maker performing market intervention. We present benchmark models based on socially optimal liquidity provision and a brokerage framework. We then examine the benefits and the dealer’s incentives to provide market liquidity.

Interactive Tutorials In The Marketing Of Digital Cameras: How Tutorials Benefit Consumers & Retailers, Andrew Eckert

Theses

There is a growing market for digital single-lens refl ex cameras (SLRs) that is driven by their ease of use, accessibility, and falling price points. Marketing these cameras with an interactive tutorial not only allows photo enthusiasts to improve as photographers, but also gives the retailer a profi table add-on and selling incentive. This work explores how interactive multimedia can be utilized as a source for instruction in camera mechanics. The proposed model is an interface using a virtual camera with which the user interacts. From this starting point the user can choose tutorials from corresponding elements on the camera. …

Visualizing A Fourth Dimension: Hypercubic Resistor Networks, Andrew J. Nelson '08 Nov 2008

Visualizing A Fourth Dimension: Hypercubic Resistor Networks, Andrew J. Nelson '08

Honors Projects

A booming field in physics research today is the search for extra dimensions. This is something that has been thought about and discussed in both the scientific and non-scientific world for a long time. Many physicists are currently attempting to answer the question: "is our world really four dimensional?" The purpose of this research, however, is not to answer that question. The purpose of this work is to help reveal four-dimensional artifacts in our perceived three-dimensional world in order to help a student, even a non-physicist, to understand and visualize how the extra spatial dimensionality, if present, might reveal itself …

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of The Plasma Arc In Arc Welding, Gu Xu, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai Nov 2008

Three-Dimensional Modeling Of The Plasma Arc In Arc Welding, Gu Xu, J. Hu, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most previous three-dimensional modeling on gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) focuses on the weld pool dynamics and assumes the two-dimensional axisymmetric Gaussian distributions for plasma arc pressure and heat flux. In this article, a three-dimensional plasma arc model is developed, and the distributions of velocity, pressure, temperature, current density, and magnetic field of the plasma arc are calculated by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy, as well as part of the Maxwell's equations. This three-dimensional model can be used to study the nonaxisymmetric plasma arc caused by external perturbations such as …

Localizing Sensor Networks In Un-Friendly Environments, Sriram Chellappan, Vamsi Paruchuri, Dylan Mcdonald, Arjan Durresi Nov 2008

Localizing Sensor Networks In Un-Friendly Environments, Sriram Chellappan, Vamsi Paruchuri, Dylan Mcdonald, Arjan Durresi

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we study the issue of defending against a wireless sensor network (WSN) that has been deployed by a malicious enemy agent in an area of interest to us. While there can be many approaches to defend against maliciously deployed WSNs, we propose the design of a localization centric approach. Specifically, the problem we address is: given an enemy deployed WSN in an area of interest to us, how can we determine locations of the sensors without co-operating with the sensors themselves during localization. In our approach, we employ a physically mobile agent called the localizer (e.g., a …

A Variable-Order Flom Algorithm For Heavy-Tailed Clutter Suppression, Y. Rosa Zheng Nov 2008

A Variable-Order Flom Algorithm For Heavy-Tailed Clutter Suppression, Y. Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The normalized fractionally-lower order moment (FLOM) algorithm exhibits fast convergence but high excess mean squared error (MSE) when the order is less than 2. This paper proposes a method using variable order moments to adaptively changing the order during adaptation, thus achieving both fast initial convergence and low excess MSE in the steady state. The algorithm is applied to both Gaussian and heavy-tailed non-Gaussian clutter suppression in phased array applications. The results show better performances of the proposed algorithm over the normalized FLOM and normalized Least Mean Square (NLMS) algorithms. The proposed algorithm also performs well in other adaptive filtering …

Victorian Organ, Christine Dunn Nov 2008

Victorian Organ, Christine Dunn

Theses

This paper is a companion piece to my short film, “Victorian Organ”. This film is an effort to contextualize the mechanical, or man-made, within nature. It is an assertion that there really is no "man vs. nature"- (a radically illogical and inherently self-destructive notion), but only man as nature, in which case, alienation and disharmony ultimately lies in our own self-perception. The impulse to identify a relationship between the mechanical and organic is inspired not only by my observations of our human society, but as a way to decode my own inner workings –an urge to reconcile seemingly major dichotomies …

Secure Communications Over Hybrid Military Networks, Vamsi Paruchuri, Arjan Durresi, Sriram Chellappan Nov 2008

Secure Communications Over Hybrid Military Networks, Vamsi Paruchuri, Arjan Durresi, Sriram Chellappan

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Stealthiness can be described as a disposition to be sly and to do things surreptitiously. This paper presents a new architecture for flexible and secure networking in battlefields that enables stealthy and covert communication in the presence of node mobility. Our architecture is based on the combination of optical (fiber) and wireless links. Our objective is to be able to carry on undeterred communication without the attack/eavesdropping nodes being able to detect the presence of any communication. This objective is not only crucial for successful completion of the operation, but also for the safety of our mobile nodes, by not …

Dynamical Pattern Formation During Growth Of A Dual-Species Bose-Einstein Condensate, Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn, Laura Elisa Halmo, Mark Edwards Nov 2008

Dynamical Pattern Formation During Growth Of A Dual-Species Bose-Einstein Condensate, Shai Ronen, John L. Bohn, Laura Elisa Halmo, Mark Edwards

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We simulate the growth of a dual species Bose-Einstein condensate using a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an additional gain term giving rise to the growth. Such growth occurs during simultaneous evaporative cooling of a mixture of two gases. The ground state of a dual condensate is normally either a miscible mixture, or an immiscible phase with two spatially separated components. In a cigar trap the ground state typically consists of one component in the center, and the other component flanking it. Our simulations show that when the condensates are formed in a cigar trap and the mixture is phase separated, then …

Virtual World Affordances: Enhancing Brand Value, S. Park, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, D. Dewester, B. Eschenbrenner, S. Jeon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Virtual worlds are three-dimensional, computer-generated worlds that are a natural extension of the existing Internet. Although many businesses are jumping on the bandwagon to maintain a presence in virtual worlds, there is no well-established knowledge or theory to guide businesses in their involvement in these environments. In this paper, we identify affordances in the virtual worlds that can be used to increase the state of flow experienced in a business virtual site, which in turn may enhance brand equity, or the perceived added value of a brand to customers. We present a conceptual model that can be used to guide …

A New Framework For The Design And Analysis Of Identity-Based Identification Schemes, Guomin Yang, Jing Chen, Duncan S. Wong, Xiaotie Deng, Dongsheng Wang Nov 2008

A New Framework For The Design And Analysis Of Identity-Based Identification Schemes, Guomin Yang, Jing Chen, Duncan S. Wong, Xiaotie Deng, Dongsheng Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Constructing an identification scheme is one of the fundamental problems in cryptography, and is very useful in practice. An identity-based identification (IBI) scheme allows a prover to identify himself to a public verifier who knows only the claimed identity of the prover and some public information. In this paper, we propose a new framework for both the design and analysis of IBI schemes. Our approach works in an engineering way. We first identify an IBI scheme as the composition of two building blocks, and then show that, with different security properties of these building blocks, the corresponding IBI schemes can …

Two-Factor Mutual Authentication Based On Smart Cards And Passwords, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaotie Deng Nov 2008

Two-Factor Mutual Authentication Based On Smart Cards And Passwords, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaotie Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most commonly used two-factor user authentication mechanisms nowadays is based on smart-card and password. A scheme of this type is called a smart-card-based password authentication scheme. The core feature of such a scheme is to enforce two-factor authentication in the sense that the client must have the smart-card and know the password in order to gain access to the server. In this paper, we scrutinize the security requirements of this kind of schemes, and propose a new scheme and a generic construction framework for smart-card-based password authentication. We show that a secure password based key exchange protocol …

Bias And Controversy In Evaluation Systems, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang Nov 2008

Bias And Controversy In Evaluation Systems, Hady Wirawan Lauw, Ee Peng Lim, Ke Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Evaluation is prevalent in real life. With the advent of Web 2.0, online evaluation has become an important feature in many applications that involve information (e.g., video, photo, and audio) sharing and social networking (e.g., blogging). In these evaluation settings, a set of reviewers assign scores to a set of objects. As part of the evaluation analysis, we want to obtain fair reviews for all the given objects. However, the reality is that reviewers may deviate in their scores assigned to the same object, due to the potential bias of reviewers or controversy of objects. The statistical approach of averaging …

Lifestyle Of Shellmound Builders In Brazil (Galley Proofs), Sabine Eggers, C. C. Petronilho, K. Brandt, J. Filippini, Karl J. Reinhard Nov 2008

Lifestyle Of Shellmound Builders In Brazil (Galley Proofs), Sabine Eggers, C. C. Petronilho, K. Brandt, J. Filippini, Karl J. Reinhard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The contact of inland and coastal prehistoric groups in Brazil is believed to have been restricted to regions with no geographical barrier, as is the case in the Ribeira de Iguape valley. The inland osteological collection from the riverine shellmound Moraes (5800–4500 BP) represents a unique opportunity to test this assumption for this region. Despite cultural similarities between riverine and coastal shellmounds, important ecological and site distribution differences are expected to impact on lifestyle. The purpose of this study is thus to document and interpret health and lifestyle indicators in Moraes in comparison to coastal shellmound groups. Specifically we test …

The Botanical Thread, Kaitlin Wilson-Bryant Nov 2008

The Botanical Thread, Kaitlin Wilson-Bryant

Theses

My thesis is an exploration of my dual desires of creation/destruction and manipulation/transformation as realized through the remediation of botanical specimens gathered from my domestic environment and transformed into works of art. Each image questions and presents an understanding of the history of botanical representation, within Western art history, as symbols of nature and femininity and the domestic skill of needlework, a traditional skill learned by women as part of the feminine. I created a conceptual dialogue with those who preceded me, intrinsically linking the acts of sewing and botany as re-interpreted feminist acts. In this work, I attempt to …

Multi-Object Decision Making For Supplier Selection In Outsourcing, Pushpen K. Mohile Nov 2008

Multi-Object Decision Making For Supplier Selection In Outsourcing, Pushpen K. Mohile

Theses

A supply chain is the system of organizations, people, technology, activities, information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from supplier to customer. The main and basic challenges in the supply chain are to plan a strategy to manage the resources and meet the demands, to select the suppliers that will deliver the goods and services that are required to build the product, to manufacture the product, to deliver the product to the customers and to make an arrangement for return of the products through customers if there is any fault in the product for servicing. This thesis …

Indirect Camera Calibration In A Medical Environment, Bennet Tillapaugh Nov 2008

Indirect Camera Calibration In A Medical Environment, Bennet Tillapaugh

Theses

This thesis addresses the need to have calibrated cameras in surgery rooms. Data can then be collected during surgeries to assist the surgeons and it can later be used for postoperation analysis. Typical techniques for camera calibration are not adequate for a medical environment due to the cameras constantly moving and with no rigid area always in the cameras’ view. The proposed approach is to calibrate cameras attached to surgical lights by utilizing extra cameras placed on the ceiling. The ceiling cameras find the position of the light cameras and calibrate their extrinsic parameters. This indirect calibration method provides an …
