The Viability Of A Thermoelectric Fuel Conditioning System For A Diesel Engine Utilizing Biodiesel, Timothy Schriefer Jan 2008

The Viability Of A Thermoelectric Fuel Conditioning System For A Diesel Engine Utilizing Biodiesel, Timothy Schriefer

Theses

Certain internal combustion engines, which run on hydrocarbon fuels, experience difficulty upon engine start-up in extreme cold weather. As ambient temperature decreases below the fuel cloud point and beyond, paraffin form in the fuel and eventually clog the fuel filter causing the engine to fail to start. This problem becomes more pronounced when the engine in question is a Diesel and the fuel utilized is biodiesel. As an alternative fuel source, biodiesel has many advantages; however, its cold weather performance is worse than even conventional diesel fuel. As biodiesel becomes more integrated into the world’s energy usage scenario, one of …

The Transcendental Dimension Of Phenomenology, Sebastian Luft Jan 2008

The Transcendental Dimension Of Phenomenology, Sebastian Luft

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This short text to follow is an attempt at philosophizing "free-style"; an attempt, that is, which does not concern itself with much recourse to primary or secondary literature. Hence, references to texts by the philosophers mentioned here are kept to a minimum. The purpose of this text, instead, is to initiate a "fundamental reflection", as one could call it, on the nature of phenomenology. May the reader indulge me in this free-styling activity, and I would welcome equally unburdened responses.

Evolutionary History And Hybridization In Passerina Buntings, Matthew D. Carling Jan 2008

Evolutionary History And Hybridization In Passerina Buntings, Matthew D. Carling

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding the genetic basis of speciation is of fundamental importance to evolutionary biology and hybrid zones offer unique natural laboratories in which to investigate the ecological and evolutionary processes important in creating and maintaining biological diversity. By comparing introgression patterns of different loci, researchers can begin to identify genetic regions that contribute to reproductive isolation between hybridizing taxa. In taxa, like birds, with heterogametic females, Haldane’s rule predicts that mtDNA and z-linked loci will introgress less than autosomal loci. I tested this prediction using the hybrid zone between Passerina cyanea (Indigo Bunting) and Passerina amoena (Lazuli Bunting), two species that …

Development Of New Stimuli-Responsive Vesicles Using A Novel Surfactant, Yuming Yang Jan 2008

Development Of New Stimuli-Responsive Vesicles Using A Novel Surfactant, Yuming Yang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many amphiphilic molecules (surfactants) possess the ability to aggregate in aqueous solution to form thermodynamically stable aggregates that have potential for use as molecule containers and delivery systems in analytical or pharmaceutical applications. However, it is difficult to release the encapsulated molecules from these aggregates under a controllable manner, and this problem has dramatically limited the application of these aggregated systems. This study addresses this problem through fundamental structure modification by development of a novel redox stimuli-responsive amphiphile capable of forming vesicle aggregates. Aggregate structure can be adjusted through redox stimulation. The release of agents from the core of the …

Land Alive!, Or Metamorphosis In The Sportsman's Paradise, Adam Tourek Jan 2008

Land Alive!, Or Metamorphosis In The Sportsman's Paradise, Adam Tourek

LSU Master's Theses

"Land Alive!" is best described a multimedia work. The produce of travels to the area of the Mississippi River delta, along with text-based research, formed the materials from which two evenings of participative performance were crafted. Personal narratives were used alongside evaluations of administrative programs, and the space in the Backyard Gallery was transformed using shovels, buckets, and teamwork. Found chairs, rope, and other objects, through ritualized interaction, became an aesthetic formation; everyone present worked together in the assembly of a boat, which contained the results of these interactions between myself, six volunteers, and an audience turned participants. The evenings …

Magnetic Field Effects On Diffusion Flames, Diego F. Gonzalez Jan 2008

Magnetic Field Effects On Diffusion Flames, Diego F. Gonzalez

LSU Master's Theses

Magnetic field effects in combustion is an area of study that has previously been overlooked. The influence of magnetic fields on flames has only recently been explored and is of interest both from a scientific and a practical standpoint. This study provides theoretical, numerical and experimental evidence that combustion can be affected with the use of suitable magnetic fields. This thesis focuses on four different types of magnetic field: homogeneous, gradient, oscillating and pre-combustion. For the homogeneous field case, the Gibbs Free Energy method was used to determine the mole fraction of product species. It was found that homogeneous fields …

Evaluating Ecological Equivalence In Created Marshes, Christopher Bromley Llewellyn Jan 2008

Evaluating Ecological Equivalence In Created Marshes, Christopher Bromley Llewellyn

LSU Master's Theses

The overall goal of coastal wetland restoration is to achieve ecological equivalence through the reproduction of structural and functional characteristics. This study sought to examine ecological equivalence using a chronosequence of temporal replicates of created marshes using traditional structural measures of equivalence and tested the use of stable isotopes as a measure of functional equivalence. The objectives of this study were to: (1) compare measures of structural equivalence at created and reference marshes; (2) use stable isotope analysis of blue crab muscle and hepatopancreas tissues to compare functional equivalence at created and reference marshes; and (3) determine if there is …

Designing Surface Chemistries For In Situ Afm Investigations Of Biomolecular Reactions With Proteins At The Nanoscale, Johnpeter Ndiangui Ngunjiri Jan 2008

Designing Surface Chemistries For In Situ Afm Investigations Of Biomolecular Reactions With Proteins At The Nanoscale, Johnpeter Ndiangui Ngunjiri

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterizations and lithography can be applied to investigate the orientation, reactivity and stability of protein molecules adsorbed on nanostructures of self-assembled monolayers at near-physiological conditions. Automated nanografting was used to fabricate regular arrays of nanopatterns of ù-functionalized n-alkanethiols with designated terminal chemistries. After writing nanopatterns, protein binding occurs selectively on carboxylate-terminated nanopatterns via covalent bonds that are formed using N-ethyl-N'(dimethylaminoporpyl)-carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide activation. The amine groups of lysine residues of proteins bond covalently to nanopatterns of carboxylate-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers, to form a robust surface attachment for sustained contact-mode AFM imaging during biochemical reactions. …

Thermomechanical Interaction Analysis Of Bodies Subjected To Oscillatory Heat Source, Jun Wen Jan 2008

Thermomechanical Interaction Analysis Of Bodies Subjected To Oscillatory Heat Source, Jun Wen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Surface heating by application of a moving heat source is a common problem in most manufacturing processes as well as in many tribological applications. The existing literature on studies of moving heat source problems primarily concentrates on unidirectional moving heat sources. Yet, a more complete analysis requires understanding of thermal behavior of bodies in relative sliding contacts subjected to oscillatory heat sources and thermomechanical interaction. In this dissertation, two analytical models are developed for rapid evaluation of the transient temperature in solids undergoing oscillatory heat source. In the first model, an analytical technique is presented to treat oscillatory heat source …

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Williams Jan 2008

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Williams

International Journal of Speleology

The epikarst (also known as the subcutaneous zone) comprises highly weathered carbonate bedrock immediately beneath the surface or beneath the soil (when present) or exposed at the surface. Porosity and permeability are higher near the surface than at depth, consequently after recharge percolating rainwater is detained near the base of the epikarst, the detention ponding producing an epikarstic aquifer. Such an aquifer is found only where the uppermost part of the vadose zone is very weathered compared to the bedrock at depth. Sometimes this contrast in porosity and permeability does not occur either because the epikarst has been scraped off …

Some Applications Of Geochemical And Isotopic Techniques To Hydrogeology Of The Caves After Research In Two Sites (Nerja Cave-S Spain And Fourbanne System-French Jura), Jacques Mudry, Bartolomé Andreo, Arnaud Charmoille, Cristina Liñán, Francisco Carrasco Jan 2008

Some Applications Of Geochemical And Isotopic Techniques To Hydrogeology Of The Caves After Research In Two Sites (Nerja Cave-S Spain And Fourbanne System-French Jura), Jacques Mudry, Bartolomé Andreo, Arnaud Charmoille, Cristina Liñán, Francisco Carrasco

International Journal of Speleology

Caves constitute privileged sampling spots to investigate the hydrochemical behaviour of infiltration, but the representative nature of samples can limit their reach. Taking this into account many results can be obtained from chemistry of water sampled in the caves. Carbonate tracers enable to reconstruct the ‘history’ of drip water water, including rainfall and temperatures. Moreover, permanent drip waters prove durability of water stored in the unsaturated zone over the cave, and lags between rain inputs and drip output enable to evaluate transit time through the unsaturated zone. The comparison of input/output concentrations can also contribute to estimate the local water …

The Origin Of The Bemaraha Tsingy (Madagascar), Márton Veress, Dénes Lóczy, Zoltán Zentai, Gábor Tóth, Roland Schläffer Jan 2008

The Origin Of The Bemaraha Tsingy (Madagascar), Márton Veress, Dénes Lóczy, Zoltán Zentai, Gábor Tóth, Roland Schläffer

International Journal of Speleology

On Madagascar the most representative occurrences of tsingy are at Ankarana and Bemaraha. The tsingy are built up of giant grikes developed along cracks as well as karren features of much smaller size which cover the surfaces between grikes. We investigated the Bemaraha tsingy of Madagascar (surveyed profiles, measured grike directions, etc.) in order to reconstruct their development. The observations indicate that the majority of grikes of the tsingy are created from caves formed under the karst water table and subsequently opened up to the surface. The predominant processes may have been downward progressing dissolution or the collapse of cave …

Mechanics Of Dump Truck Vibrations In High-Impact Shovel Loading Operations, Nassib Aouad Jan 2008

Mechanics Of Dump Truck Vibrations In High-Impact Shovel Loading Operations, Nassib Aouad

Doctoral Dissertations

"The deployment of large machinery for low cost, bulk surface mine production operations has resulted in high-impact shovel loading operations (HISLO). In extreme cases, shovels load large dump trucks with 100-ton (or more) passes generating high-impact forces under gravity. HISLO generates high-frequency shockwaves that cause severe truck vibrations exposing operators to whole body vibrations (WBV). This WBV levels may exceed the recommended International Standards Organization (ISO) limits resulting in longterm lower-back disorders and other health problems. There is a need for fundamental and applied research to determine HISLO vibration levels for heavy mining machinery, their comparisons to ISO 2631 limits …

Enabling Wind Turbine Generators To Participate In Power Grid Frequency Regulation For Enhanced Stability, Hongtao Ma Jan 2008

Enabling Wind Turbine Generators To Participate In Power Grid Frequency Regulation For Enhanced Stability, Hongtao Ma

Doctoral Dissertations

"This dissertation focuses on wind farm frequency regulation capability to maintain the grid frequency stability. Wind plant power controllers are designed and tested for participation in grid frequency restoration. The small signal stability on sub-optimal operating points is analyzed and a de-loaded operating point is proposed.

In the first paper, a new frequency regulation scheme is developed for the wind turbine/generator/converter trio that will provide the capability to participate in restoring frequency in a way similar to the droop response of conventional generators. Output active power adjustment can be realized by both converter and pitch angle control in addition to …

Inverse Limits Of Permutation Maps, Robbie A. Beane Jan 2008

Inverse Limits Of Permutation Maps, Robbie A. Beane

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this paper we study the topological properties of continua which arise as inverse limits on [0; 1] with bonding maps chosen from the permutation family of Markov maps. For such inverse limits, we examine the occurrence of indecomposability, the number of end points in the continuum, and the types of subcontinua present in the continuum. We provide a process for determining the topological structure of the inverse limit generated by a single permutation map, or by the composition of several such maps. Additionally, we show that all such inverse limits are Kelley continua. We will apply these results to …

Addressing Nonlinear Combustion Instabilities In Highly Dilute Spark Ignition Engine Operation, Brian C. Kaul Jan 2008

Addressing Nonlinear Combustion Instabilities In Highly Dilute Spark Ignition Engine Operation, Brian C. Kaul

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dilute operation is a promising approach for increasing spark-ignition engine efficiency, in the form of either lean burn (air dilution) or EGR (inert dilution). High levels of charge dilution, however, lead to cyclic variability that is largely deterministic in nature. The determinism and nonlinear nature of the system indicate that it should be possible to reduce the cycle-to-cycle variations by implementing an electronic controller. Several needs arise when considering the development of such a controller. Three topics of interest are covered herein. First, a method of analysis for nonlinear dynamical systems is applied to engine data in order to estimate …

The consumption of shellfish that accumulate marine biotoxins produced by harmful Algae can result in severe gastrointestinal or neurotoxic illnesses depending on the nature of the toxin. Therefore, it is essential that suitable monitoring programs are implemented in order to protect public health. This PhD study focused on aspects of the characteristics and monitoring of azaspiracids and toxins from Dinophysis spp. Passive samplers were used in this study in parallel with both indigenous and transplanted mussels that did not contain toxins to investigate the accumulation of toxins on the West coast of Ireland during 2005. This approach allowed for a …

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright Jan 2008

Novel Photoelectrochemical Cell For The Remediation Of Organic Compounds In Water, Patrick Enright

Doctoral

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) suspensions have widely been used as photocatalysts, either alone or in a doped form to degrade organic compounds and kill bacteria. Because of its relatively large band gap, UV light has been the most efficient radiation used to allow this catalysis to occur. TiO2 has also been immobilised on electrodes in order to separate the ‘reduction’ and ‘oxidation’ reactions. Typical systems involve the oxidation of a ‘fuel’ at a TiO2 coated anode and the reduction of oxygen at a separate cathode, where the passage of current can be monitored, and this work utilises such a system. In …

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle Jan 2008

Digital Close Range Photogrammetry In Motor Vehicle Accident Reconstruction, Fiona Coyle

Doctoral

Road traffic accidents are consistently in the top ten causes of death world-wide. In order to reduce the number of fatalities caused by traffic collision, better knowledge and understanding of the sequence of events prior to and during a traffic accident, i.e. Accident Reconstruction, is required, so it is important to obtain detailed quantitative information about the damage sustained by the crashed vehicle(s). The research reported here was aimed at developing a fast and accurate method of measuring the damage. Digital Close Range Photogrammetry is the technique chosen for obtaining vehicle profiles from which accurate measurements of crust damage could …

Polymer Reinforced Aerogels And Composites A. Polyimide Crosslinked Aerogels B. Silica-Polymethylmethacrylate Composites, Vishal U. Patil

Masters Theses

"Crosslinking of aerogels is a promising approach to combine the advantages of inorganic and polymeric materials. In the present study, two types of polyimide-silica hybrid aerogels, APTES-BTDA-MDA (mol ratio: 2:2:1) and APTES-BTDA-MDA (mol ratio: 2:3:2), were synthesized using a sol-gel process followed by heating in order to imidize the polyamic acid that is formed quickly and is covalently bonded to silica. The hybrid aerogels were made using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) endcapped polyamic acids and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) as precursors. Polyimide crosslinked aerogels were characterized by TGA, SEM, FT-IR, BET, solid state NMR and gas pycnometry. These hybrid aerogels exhibit high thermal stability …

The Crab Nebula's Dynamical Age As Measured From Its Northern Filamentary Jet, G. C. Rudie, R. A. Fesen, T. Yamada

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a deep [O III] 4959,5007 image of the northern filamentary jet in the Crab Nebula taken with the 8.2m Subaru telescope. Using this image and an image taken with the KPNO 4m in 1988 (Fesen & Staker 1993), we have computed proper motions for 35 locations in the jet. The results suggest that when compared to the main body of the remnant, the jet experienced less outward acceleration from the central pulsar's rapidly expanding synchrotron nebula. The jet's apparent expansion rate yields an undecelerated explosion date for the Crab Nebula of 1055 plus or minus 24 C.E., a …
